I think if there is one country on our whole trip that I wish we had spent more time in it would probably be Austria. We had no hostel booked heading into Austria so we basically could get off at any stop but it was late and we decided our best bet at finding a place was Salzburg. Salzburg has gained much of it's popularity as being the setting for the Sound of Music. I haven't seen Sound of Music as a good so unfortunately I didn't recognize any of the setting but Salzburg is beautiful on it's own. Our first day was spent walking around the city and through the shops. I was determined to find a good deal on a cookoo clock as my parents souvenier. Later on in the afternoon we started ... read more

We woke up on Saturday morning, ready to go.....well, I guess it was Saturday morning....it was still night in Tulsa. So we were sort of experiencing a little jet lag. But we were excited to see where we were, and see the city a little bit. The mornings here are beautiful! There's no air conditioning in the residence hall (more on that later!), but on our first morning, it was nice. The window stays open all night and there are no screens on the windows, because there are no bugs. The sky is bright blue and no clouds, the air is fresh, and we can hear the morning birds and church bells from surrounding churches. We can even see the mountains from our window....the edge of the Alps. With the morning sun shining on it, ... read more

We finally made it to Salzburg! But the trip was long....much longer than we originally planned. We left Tulsa on Thursday morning in a downpour. The plane was scheduled to leave at 12:55 p.m., but was delayed because of a late plane coming into Tulsa. So we had to change our entire itinerary. We finally got to Dallas, where we were to get a plane directly to Frankfurt, Germany. But instead, we flew to Chicago! We spent most of the day on Thursday flying around the U.S....just trying to get out of the country! Finally we got our plane in Chicago to fly to Frankfurt at 7:30 in the evening. Finally, it hit us that we were going on this trip! Many of the people getting on the plane were speaking German...they were returning to ... read more

It's the day of departure from Vienna - or maybe not? The train I booked has no bike storage (night train Vienna-Berlin), so I'm forced to book another train for tomorrow, leaving in the morning and arriving in the evening (19:12). I spend the afternoon running through Vienna, getting my bike from the mechanic, who did some last-minute checks and got it ready for the tour. I'm almost all the way through my list, even got the 1:300 000 map of Poland, just missing sandals...do I really need that PDA?... read more

I arrived in Salzburg just after midday. One of the biggest tourist things to do here is visit the ice caves. The BusAbout guide was selling tickets for a tour of the ice caves on board the bus. The price was a little steep, so I wasn't sure if I'd go. After getting talking with Sarah, who was sitting behind me on the bus, I decided to give the tour a miss and try to 'wing it' to the caves with her. She had done some research on how to get there and it worked out about 20 AUD cheaper, so that sounded much better. After checking into Yoho International Youth Hostel we caught the train out to Werfen. Well, that was the plan! Once the train pulled into Werfen we couldn't get the train door ... read more

So I'm going to start from the very beginning, it's a very good place to start. After leaving Ibiza, I went from one airport to another to catch another plane to Vienna. I was picked up from the airport from my friend, Sonia (from work at home). We were staying in a gorgeous little town called Monchof, where my friend and I were really the only ones who could speak English, luckily Sonia could translate for me. We went for a bike ride and people were stopping and staring at us, we were definately not locals! We had some schnitzel, but not with noodles. We headed into Vienna for a day of sightseeing, Sonia was my tour guide. Then I was off to Salzburg and more importantly The Sound of Music tour! As we headed off ... read more

So I arrived in Venice after a great train ride. I really don´t mind trains and it is a great way of catching up on reading, journal, postcards etc. This one was particularly enjoyable as it was short, plus all of the sunflowers are out. The last time I was in Italy it was too late for sunflowers (they were all dead & black, not nice) and this time we were too early. However I got my fill of fields of sunflowers in Austria!! Found the hostel ok and it is NOICE. Its a Wombats one, they have 2 here and one in Berlin & Munich. This is the newest one and it has everything a backpacker could want. Small dorms (4 beds), huge lockers, proper showers (eg no detachable head), hairdryers, and even the ... read more

I wasnt sure where to go after Ljublijana and had tentatively pencilled in Budapest. After speaking with people who had been there I have decided it needs at least 4 days to do it justice and after consulting with friends (thanks Anna et al!) decided to come to Salzburg. After a 5 hour train ride from Ljublijana I arrived in Salzburg. I found my hostel ok and got changed to head into town, in search of my first experience. The first thing I noticed was the horses and the smell - Salzburg has horse drawn carts and while it seems like a good idea there's nothing worse I could think of than sitting behind a horse that stinks and paying for it!! (romantic, aren't I?). Salzburg is really charming tho and I really enjoyed walking ... read more
