Background: Populated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917. Popularly-elected governors have served since 1948. In 1952, a constitution was enacted providing for internal self government. In plebiscites held in 1967, 1993, and 1998, voters chose to retain commonwealth status.

I'm officially back on the ship and could not be happier to be here. Amazing how only a little more than a week ago I felt so uncertain about being here, yet today, coming back was as good as coming home after travelling. I know I am really delayed in posting this, but yes, there is an address for everyone asking. Here's how to reach me. The mailing address is: Carnival Destiny Jeanette Hedley #403242 Entertainment / Club O2 360 San Francisco Street (Suite DE) San Juan, Puerto Rico, 00901 USA And to call, it's 1 877 225 7447 and then [View Full Entry]

OK, so technically this isnt Puerto Rico, but I am extending this TravelBlog entry by an extra day anyway. Just when it seemed this adventure was over, it was actually about to begin again. Our plane landed in Harrisburg at 12:30am and it was 2:00am in the morning when we finally got everyone settled and crawled into bed. Maybe it was the storm brewing outside or the fact that our heat had been turned down while we were gone. Or maybe it was just the fact that we had spent a week in the warmth of Puerto Rico, but the house [View Full Entry]

After 5 consecutive days where we were exploring a new port every day, today was our only day at sea. We spent much of the day exploring the parts of the ship that we had yet to explore as well as spending way too much time at the buffet. In between the ship exploration and buffet stops, we were just lounging by the pool and relaxing. Today was the only day during the duration of the cruise where we had sun the entire day. This brought everybody out to the pool. Today we finally found the elusive rock climbing wall [View Full Entry]

Today we leave. It’s been a fun trip, but there is a lot waiting for us when we get home. Karin is already shifting back into Christmas mode; gifts need to be purchased, presents need to be wrapped, and a tree must be bought and decorated! Rylee and Paige are excited to get home to tell Granna and Grandma about their adventures. They also look forward to returning to school to share their Puerto Rican candy that they purchased. I love the fact that we don’t have to get on a plane until 3:30pm. We sleep in; take our time packing, [View Full Entry]

We awaken early Friday morning and once again set off for Fajardo. Only this time we will not be staying. We are boarding a ferry down at the port for a day-trip to Culebra, an island just off the coast. Culebra has a total population of about 1800. According to Frommers, this is a very lazy and relaxed island. It is said to resemble what the Carribean used to be like in the 60’s; before much of it became commercialized. There are no resorts or high-rises on Culebra. If you choose to stay, you can rent a guesthouse near one of [View Full Entry]

Thursday starts out with some big excitement. After weeks of Rylee’s top front tooth barely hanging on by a thread, it finally comes out while she is drawing in her journal and demonstrating how the iguana eats. She will now officially be able to sing “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth”. About 10 miles east of our resort is the town of Fajardo which boasts “white sandy beaches and the best snorkeling mainland PR has to offer”. Our plan for Thursday is to spend the day at Playa Seven Seas. Despite the warnings of large crowds, I [View Full Entry]

Wednesday’s weather looks to be a bit nicer. We get up; eat the official breakfast of our PR trip - Island Princess Pop-Tarts and coffee, and discuss our plans. We agree to go to Old San Juan today. We are going to leave after lunch in hopes of avoiding a traffic mess like we experienced the first night. Since we have time to kill, we head down to the pool. Every day at 11:00am they do an iguana feeding. We checked it out on Tuesday, but there were only two iguanas out due to the cold, damp weather, and they both [View Full Entry]

Apparently the forecast was off by a day. Rylee opens the curtains Tuesday morning and it is absolutely pouring. With no relief in sight, we decide to use this as a down day. We spend some time at the pool (mostly the hot tub - Paige’s favorite), and go for a nice long walk on the beach outside our resort during a brief dry spell. We also use this day to drive to Fajardo for some advanced scouting for our trips to Playa Seven Seas and Culebra later in the week. [View Full Entry]

Left last night from Rio de Janeiro, arrived mid-day in San Juan to get started on our SeaDream adventure, starting with 4 days in San Juan to get travel-ready (i.e., starting to eat and drink too much, and getting being lazy, and not being guilty about it) soo we could hit the boat primed for our high seas adventures. According to the weather reports, Monday is to be our rainiest day in PR. We figure that if it is going to rain all day anyway, we might as well head to the rainforest! Our resort is literally right across the main highway from the El Yunque Rainforest, the only rainforest in the US National Parks system. We follow a very long and steep road that winds all the way up the mountain. We once again follow the advice in our Frommer’s Guide and decide to hike their favorite trail which is estimated to be a 2 hour hike. The trail [View Full Entry]
