We have made it to our destination in Panama City. The flight was on time. We took a taxi to the hotel. We have a very nice room and can see the pool from the room. We went out for dinner across the street from the ocean. Pedro found a gelato shop just a couple blocks from our hotel. I am sure we will be back often over the next week. Tonight we took a swim in the hot tub. It was sunny and 88 degrees today. ... read more

We had breakfast at a café a couple blocks from the hotel. Cafe' Alto. We then went to Old Town Panama City. Old buildings. Churches. New hats. A few birds for Mary! It was hot and close to 90 degrees. We went back to the hotel for a swim. Then it was a night out to the Hard Rock Hotel!. We went up to the 62nd floor and looked out over the city. It was amazing! Had dinner at the hotel. A beautiful day in a wonderful city!... read more

The view of Panama City was breath taking from the plane. Modern city with pockets of poverty. Efficient public transportation. A lit on the higher end of backpacking budget. Ate at Mcdonald's majority of the time. Met a friendly African American at the hostel. She was a bit older then the crowd, but was good company to have. She shared her plans of retiring in Panama. I wonder where and how she is doing today... Explored parts of the city, a Frank Ghery designed museum and the Panama Canal. Explored the lower income part of the city, which consisted mostly of Mestizo and citizen of African descent. They were friendly and approachable, but the outer appearance worried me, so I politely hurried off. Would definitely like to revisit when not on a backpacker budget.... read more

Hello everybody! Well, I have been VERY LAZY lately and did not make much effort to write but I'm back at it again! No excuses, even though I have been busy I could have made time to write. My visit to Panama was in July 2016 and it's a shame I'm writing this entry now in December 2017. In the meantime I kept writing articles for the Dutch newspaper in Curaçao, which is great. All is going well here in Curaçao, it's been almost 2 years since I came back from my last big trip. Often my feet gets VERY itchy and I really want to travel long-term again. It might happen, not sure yet...we'll see. After being away for 7 years, it was about time to return to Panamá. One of my favourite destinations and ... read more

EL VALLE DE ANTÓN El Valle de Antón, generally called El Valle, or Anton's Valley in English, is a small town in the mountains of Panama with about 8000 residents and located in the central province of Coclé. Three million years ago a large volcano in the area erupted with such a massive force that it blew off its entire top - creating a crater, nearly four miles across - one of the largest in the Americas ... ... Over the years the crater gradually filled with rainwater creating a massive lake and much later in time, through erosion a large breach opened and the entire lake drained out. The resulting flood created an extensive network of rivers which attracted wildlife and indigenous people into to the region and the valley was born. So now, El ... read more

GAMBOA, PANAMA - 1 - 7 OCTOBER 2017 We flew into Panama from Nicaragua and the flight was really quick and easy taking under an hour and half - a really short journey for us. It was a speedy process through customs as well and we soon had our luggage off the rack and wandered outside to meet up with our driver who was waiting for us. The journey to Gamboa was also quick and easy and about an hour after we set off we reached an iron and wood bridge crossing the Chagres River which is the only access road into Gamboa our destination. This old bridge was well past its ‘sell by date’ and falling apart, vehicles waited patiently at the traffic lights to cross since it is only capable of providing space for ... read more

“Ach wie schön ist Panama” (Uh, Panama is nice!) said once the tiger and the bear in a German children’s story. Due to many wrong directions these two never arrived but after 5 month I found it – and I can agree, they would not have said anything different. I stopped for two nights in the coffee region - Boquete. After spending many weeks in a hot climate, the refreshing temperatures of the coffee region felt very good. Loooots of rain, no power and I had the perfect excuse to get many hours of deeeep sleep (without waking up covered in sweat). The hills around were lush, the air was fresh and the coffee really tasty – a fantastic place to breath in before staying a week in the concrete jungle of Panama City. On the ... read more

03/07 - El Valle - the worlds longest inhabited town within a volcano crater. It was quite bizarre thinking we were within a crater, El Valle is a small town but with plenty to do. We stayed at Bodhi hostel, a great communal setup with lots of hammocks and chill out areas. As standard we got a free pancake breakkie (with maple syrup, mango and watermelon). Mangos are pricey in Perth, here they litter the pavement. Moza waterfalls Today we walked to some waterfalls, a nice walk with no one else around. On the way back we thought we'd check out a good viewing spot up the hill, on the map it didn't look far... We got to the top red-faced and puffing after a seriously steep slog up the road. The calves were screaming! But ... read more

Dank Regenponchos bleiben wir einigermasse... read more

PANAMA: Panama City and San Blas islands We were sad to say goodbye to Galapagos, but excited for the next chapter! We arrived in Panama City at around 1am, watching from the plane window I was surprised to see how built up it was. Taxi man 'Super Mario' (complete with sovereign 'S' ring that looked like it had come from a fancy dress box) pointed out the skyscrapers, casinos and large international hotels that made up the rich area. We chose to stay in Hospedaje Casco Viejo, located in the old town - the nicest part of the city. One thing that struck me was the number of police patrolling, even outside our hostel there were 3. Apparently they are working hard to attract visitors and make people feel safe. It certainly didn't feel dangerous. The ... read more
