Well, today I decided to take the secret, back way into Honduras from El Salvador...thats nice dear.... What an epic!...got out of San Miguel, yes, one of many San Miguels, there like the Smith name is to telephone books, San Miguels are to maps of central and south america....found the supposed border town just at the end of the road where they said it would be...but where's the road out?..some sort of mystery...the ongoing aversion to signage!...evryone pointing in different directions but the most credible says ´turn off at the casa de mouse´..so we go to a corner, no casa de mouse, and only a dirt track heading off into the sticks!...ask a few more punters, same story, so its off into the wild dirt track yonder...unbelievably bad road, washouts, rocks, everything a good dirt biker ... read more

Soewhere deep in north Honduras....one minute in Guate ..next in Honduras..and you´ll have to excuse the typing cos this is one sicko keyboard..u can see already that the space bar don´t always work.. So, down from the hills and the rareified atmosphere of Antigua..still a quandry as to whether its enjoyable being somewhere just like home or not..certainly a surreal bit of Guate..so, down, down to the coast, hotter and sweatier..then the rain..pissing down, then off to the left, lightning, great bolt hits the ground in the next field, blast of thunder, flashes of light...hole up in a servo until it passes..then down again, out of the coffee and avocado lands, down into sugar cane, bananas..and this where so much fantastic coffee comes from but can anyone make a decent cup of coffee?...like trying to get ... read more

RUINS!!!!!!!! Massive stone monuments in the middle of the Hondurian highland jungle....Discovered in the 1700 but not uncovered until recently (parts of it as late as the 80s) the Copan Ruinas Archeological Site is an impressive experience. The ruins are spread out over an area of 24 square km, and hiking around it climbing over temples, ballgame courts, ceremonial plazas and graves, you cant help but wonder if your stepping on someones kitchen or bed since only a fraction of the Mayan city has been dug out and the mounds you walk on are the parts that yet remain to be discovered. The guides brought the whole thing to life with their endless tales and trivia. One of them was only 13 years old ...killing time after school! See pics for details ok!... read more

OK..big shouts to Gun and the guy I´ve never met, Vladimir, for tha travel tips..unfortunately they arrived a bit late, since we were already heading from the soggy volcanic island in Nicaragua for the heights of Honduras and its Mayan ruins. Anyway, thanks all the same..maybe next time?! After almost 2 days spent crammed into hot sweaty buses ( or freezing cold ones - they love their ac down here! ) it´s good to be in Copan. Full of quaint little shops and cafes, coffe plantations and ancient ruins, it´s a nice change after spending some time in the dodgy, chaotic capitals Managua and Tegucigalpa!..not to mention almost getting washed off the volcanic island Ometepe! We just burnt all our pics and emptied the camera, at long last, so hopefully after tommorrow´s adventures we´ll be able ... read more

Things I love about Copan: 1. The people are amazingly friendly and helpful. I cant believe how just absolutely sweet people have been to me. My host family especially. The mom cooks with soy milk for me and always is offering me cakes or sweets or pinol and asking me how I feel. There is a young woman who lives next door who has adopted me as her friend and always talks with me, no matter how horrible my spanish is. The dad at my family helped me make my hotel reservation in San Pedro Sula this morning. People go out of their way to point out interesting bugs and flowers and stuff if you show interest... which i do! 2. Everyone says the food in Honduras sucks. But I havent had that experience. Maybe it´s ... read more

Hey Everyone. Sooo, I have ten more days in Honduras. I can´t believe how fast it has gone by. I just have a few minutes for a quick update. Things are good. Spanish classes at Guacamaya have been good.. Met some girls who might be going to Tela (the beach!) on Sunday. They have asked me if i want to accompany them... And I cant decide. Because I have already paid for staying at my house until Wednesday. But the beach would be fabulous. So, we will see. I will update everyone if I do make that decision. Gone out a few times since my friends have left. Made some new friends... Some locals and travelers. Having a good time! ... read more

Last Friday, on my way to my last class at the Copan Spanish School, I stopped by the "castle." It is this decrepid old building that kinda looks like a castle. Apparently it is the only piece of architecture that is considered colonial. But it is falling apart and not taken care of at all. Its pretty nasty. I wonder if there are some squatters living there... Last Sunday I ventured up to the Bird Park (www.macawmountain.com) with Rebecca. We took a moto-taxi (lucky number 20!) up to the park. Oh number 20, how we do love you. Number 20 has a sticker of Che, a naked lady painted on the back, flames that say "Hot Wheels" and...my favorite.. a large sticker that says "www.playboy.com." I had been dying to take a ride with this guy ... read more

Before I begin rambling about my life here in Copan, I want to mention my family. While in Copan, I have gotten an email that said my grandmother died, one that said my other grandmother had a stroke, and now one that says my cousin´s aggressive cancer has returned. This has all been pretty difficult to deal with through email. For those of you who do so, it would be appreciated if you said a little prayer for my family. Thanks. Friday was our last official day of work at CRIA (the lab) and the Ruins! YAY! I am SOOOO ready for a break! Most of my compañeros left for San Pedro either yesterday or this morning. And soon they will be on their way back to the US. I have three more weeks. I start ... read more

This past week has been intense. Last Friday we left for our trip to the coast. We drove to a tiny town (if you can really call it that) west of Tela called San Juan. We went to a desolate restaraunt on the beach. The beach was empty of people and absolutely beautiful. I have never seen such a beautiful beach. The water was crystal clear, aqua blue, calm waves, and very warm. I had shrimp and swam. This summer is the first time I have actually spent a significant amount of time in the water in ten years. When I lived in NC, there was one summer where there were 4 shark attacks in one month. I think that kind of scarred me. But now I cant get enough of the water. Rosa and I ... read more

After updating my travelblog last Sunday, I went with mis compañeros, Bob and Rosa, to the hotel outside of Copan Ruinas--La Posada Real--and bought a coke and used their swimming pool! Lotsa bugs. But it was a very nice looking hotel. And we got to swim! It was awesome. We took a moto-taxi to the hotel... 20 Lempiera each. After about 3 or 4 hours of swimming and lounging we left. We started walking back, hoping we would see a moto-taxi--but a little doubtful since it was quite a bit outside of town. Or, kinda. I mean, its not that far. But anyway, while we were walking back a nice old man in a pickup wearing a cowboy hat pulled over and let us jump in the back. So we got a ride in the back ... read more
