Background: The native Arawak Amerindians - who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by Columbus in 1492 - were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years. In the early 17th century, the French established a presence on Hispaniola, and in 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island - Haiti. The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean, but only through the heavy importation of African slaves and considerable environmental degradation. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'OUVERTURE and after a prolonged struggle, became the first black republic to declare its independence in 1804. Haiti has been plagued by political violence for most of its history. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Bria, Haiti (returning with needed gifts from Canada) Annie & I would like to start by sending out a warm thank you to all those who helped out this past February in donating all the incredibly needed items for the small village of Bria, Haiti. On April 14th 2007, after sailing in the night before, we had the incredible experience of personally distributing everything, face to face, to the villagers. Facing us was a sensitive challenge of trying to distribute all the articles we had in a fair manner, since we did not have enough of everything for everyone and [View Full Entry]

This is a very common here, to see vendors carrying their merchandise on their heads as they solicit customers throughout the streets.
Haiti, an adventure that warms the heart. Everything is good on our end and spring is definitely in the air here in Haiti. The mango tree branches are almost touching the ground, filled with ripening mangos. In one to two weeks time, there will be so many mangos to eat, that every child will have their face covered in mango. Rain is now becoming more frequent and the temperature at high noon is getting hotter and hotter, but the nights are still cool. Over the Easter weekend, we set sail back to Montrouis to spend this holiday. It was nice [View Full Entry]

Haiti: our adventure continues!! As we state on our web site! Surrounded by beautiful scenic landscapes… the pool is opened 24 hours a day (no chlorine, no lifeguard and at own risk). Palm trees and coconuts.. $6 bottles of rum.. Snorkeling on reefs with more colors than you can imagine.. Romantic outdoor sunset dinners, while being serenaded by the wind and waves, and later by the glow of the moon… We can truly now say this is not a statement but the truth to our daily lives!! Our time is well spent here in Haiti, as every day is driven [View Full Entry]

Tuesday March 13th 2007 Let us tell you that updating everything is something of an adventure here… The last time we made the long hike to the town of Grande Goave to update our last posting, arriving there to find out that the electrical power was out (no Surprise here!)! We were told that the power had been out for some 4 days by then, something to do with a fallen tree near by. With no idea as to when the power will be restored, we where kindly offered by the owners the internet service, that we could rent a local [View Full Entry]

Read the blog for more details, but Mark was so funny around the market and YES, they were PUSHY!!!!!
This was RCCL's private location in Haiti, which I was sort of wondering why we were going there; but I must say, it was a lot better than the "private islands" I have been on with other cruise lines. I had got plenty of sun so I tried not to be out in it too much, but we had a good time in their "city". I think the most memoriable was walking through the markets. They were VERY VERY pushy!!!!! and that is saying it nicely. Mark had already run out of the market once because he just could not stand [View Full Entry]

I arrive on the tender from the biggest ship in the world from the Royal Carribean cruize lines and ofcourse i'm late for my kayaking adventure. But that doesn't distract me from the beautiful landscape i spot from the boat. The hills of Haiti were covered with a dense lush greeness it was spectacular. I step foot on the beach and this was the first international land i've ever been on besides frequent trips to Mexico. All of us in CA belive that Mexico isn't a real International destoination its just Mexico haha. I rush over to the kayak place [View Full Entry]

It’s already the end of January 2007… it has been eight weeks that we have now been in Haiti., and we are still going strong… As you can see from the sporadic updates, the internet connections are always proving to be a great challenge here, we even have a internet connection via Haitel (local cellular phone company) using their cellular network, but this is still not working in places we seem to be. In result we are not always able to update everything, but when we find internet service, we do our best to update all.. Other than that, Annie & [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, We have now been in Haiti for six weeks and it has been some fourteen weeks since we set sail south from Lake Champlain New York. Annie & I are doing great and we are taking everything in stride. Our Creole is improving and our adaptation here is on going day by day. Since our last update this is what we have been up to. Still after six weeks we have not met even one other foreign cruising vessel. We are told that there are a few cruising boats at Ile la Vache, we’ll tell you more once we [View Full Entry]

Wednesday January 10 2007 Ile de la Gonave, Haiti It has been, believe it or not, five weeks since we arrived in Haiti. We are still adjusting to the daily life and the culture here, a true challenge in itself. Many here say that you never get used to this country… you just accept and adapt to how things are. We are starting to believe that this is true. Most times, we feel as if we are missionary’s here. There is a huge mixture of emotions for us and we are making the best of our time here in order to [View Full Entry]
