So this weekend Elizabeth, Catherine and I made our way to Semuc Champey, just past Coban. Although it was only supposed to take about 5 hours to get there it was more like 8. We arrived on Saturday around lunchtime after waking up and finding the quetzal (national bird of Guatemala) in the morning. It is very hard to spot as it is very rare so we were lucky to see it. Once we had arrived in Lanquin it was off to Semuc which was another 2 hours drive along very bumpy gravel roads. After an hours hike up to the look out point we could see the rock pools and the view was spectacular, so beautiful and what amazing bright colours!! We needed about half hour up here to catch our breaths and then it ... read more

With Nicole on the computer by my side, I write to you from cool, rainy Coban, Guatemala. I currently have my shirt pulled over my nose because the fumes from some stupid diesel car parked outside are making me light headed. After a VERY long ride from Flores, we finally turned off the paved road and spent the next hour on a twisting, rocky, pothole ridden goat trail. We both felt pretty beat up at the end of the journey. Our final destination was the Hotel Portal, a 5 minute walk from Semuc Champey. The first night in this place wasnt the greatest...the place was full, so we slept in a half finished room which I think really belonged to the hotel employees. The sheets were dirty, there was no glass in the windows, the families ... read more

Today was a day of facing many of my fears. We left for Semuc Champey around 9:30am. We rode in the back of a pick up truck for about 30 minutes to get there. Once there we ventured through the caves. We were a group of 11 with a guide, wearing only our shoes and bathing suits. The cave was amazing. Also scary. This cave was much different than yesterday. There were no man made stairs or hung lights. There was also A LOT of water in this cave, and we spent a good chunk of our time swimming with one hand while holding a candle above the water with the other hand. There were lots of climbs on wobbly ladders. There was cliff jumping into water that was only lit by the guide's headlamp ... read more

Where to begin...the last two days have felt like an entire week because of the amount of adventure that´s taken place in such a short time. When we last posted we were getting ready to leave the tiny, very hot island of Flores to head to Coban and Semuc-Champey to see what has been called the most beautiful place in Guatemala. When we left Flores with our acquired travel buddies (Shyra and Natalie) we thought we´d have a quick 5 hour shuttle ride to Coban to stay the night and then a day down at Semuc. The shuttle ride started out normal enough and we were joined by a british couple, an irish girl and a german guy all heading to the same place. The trek proved quite scary for myself because the driver was a ... read more

Semuc Champey could very well be on the list of the most picturesque places in the world. It is an amazing place of pools of caribbean blue water on top of a limestone bridge that spans over the actual river. With natural waterfalls and many small nooks to loose yourself in on a hot day, it was a wonderful respite for the kids and adults alike. Unfortunately, we ventured here on a Saturday, when other Guatemalans are taking their weekends to also enjoy the site. But once the showers came in and the busloads left, it was quite serene. We crossed over part of the natural bridge to see the raging river rush under where we had been swimming and were awed by the contrast. It made it worth the long, twisty drive on a dirt ... read more

Hello, I have been a bad blogger, frankly it has been too long since I last posted, so here comes a huge juicy entry for those of you still taking an interest! Ok, so Jahn and Theresa left. Very sad. But then I met Casey, a medical student from wait for it.. Las Vegas baby(!), and a new Norwegian hot-pocket by the name of Elle-Mari. He has a rather wicked sense of humor which really helped to lift the mood on occasion back at the orphanage. Playing a sort of tongue in cheek Mr. America figure, an athletic loud mouthed genius of slap stick, Casey was a regular Jim Carey. She, on the other hand, has this chip on her shoulder about men, a real one woman worrier. Now couple this with the most adorable ... read more

Hey, So i havent written anything on the blog since i was packing back in montreal, so i figured it was time. So far my favorite place has been semuc champey. it was incredible. We hung out iwth 6 israelis the whole time and we just had a blast swimming and tubing and caving. We were planning on skipping seing some caves cause we were like, aww its just caves, seen em. holly cow was i wrong.. going into these caves turned out to be one of the best decision we could have made, turns out i think it is on the top 10 coolest things ive ever done. I won{t be able to describe it so well online but basically picture the 12 of us (israelis, us and 2 others from the hostel) all holding ... read more

So the journey to get to Semuc Champey will forever be burned into my memory. Step 1- take a shitty chicken bus that should hold 12 people but packs 22 on a windy highway for a few hours, step 2, on the turn off for Lanquin (a town right by semuc champey) it says the town is only 11km away yet it takes over an hour to get there because the van is driving on nothing that remotely resembles a road. At one point we had to stop because there was a semi on the road clearing large rocks from the road so it was driveable. Step 3- arrived in Lanquin and allow a local man to convince you to go to this beautiful hotel by semuc champey. Step 4- he takes you to his mode ... read more

It is Monday of the second week of spanish and day #10 in Guatemala. Can´t believe it is already the second week of the trip- in some ways it feels like I just got here and in some ways, seems like I have been gone for so long. I decided to stay in Antigua for one more week with my school and the homestay family. Even though Antigua is quite touristy and I am able to speak a lot of English with the many other travelers here... it is also easy, safe, and a good jumping point for weekend adventures. This past weekend went on a group trip to Lanquin and Semuc Champey which is in the middle of Guatemala- near Coban. Booked the trip with a fellow student at the Ixchel Spanish School on Thursday ... read more

ENGLISH Oh my god! If Carlsberg did marvels of nature they'd do Semuc Champey! Just see the pictures (all two of them). We spent the afternoon of NYE diving from one pool to another in the sunshine. Climbing up and doing it again. Hope you are all well and that 2007 brings all the health, wealth, strength and happiness you could wish for. Love to all!! ... read more
