Hier leben Mestizos ( meist Nachkoemmlinge von Spaniern), Indigenas ... read more

Well after our whilstle stop tour of Tikal, we spent one more night at Tortugal....although this time not in as much comfort! We arrived in Rio Dulce and called the manager of the hotel to fetch us in the boat. When he arrived we were told that there was no room at the inn for us! John the manager felt bad for us and put us up in the half finished hotel extention at the very back of the property! Kind of him and after the hard ground of camping in Tikal...it was easy to accept a mattress! The next morning, the lancha picked us up at 9.30am from the hotel for our pleasant sight seeing trip down the Rio Dulce to the mouth of the river to the port of Livingston. The trip down was ... read more

After abandoning our epic sea voyage from Honduras to Guatemala we needed to make our way back overland to Livingston and return to our original itinerary. As we headed off at dawn on the ferry from Utila we were greeted by clear skies and calm seas and I had this nagging feeling that the weather would be like that for weeks to come. Some of the best fun we had in Honduras was as we were traveling around the country and we really enjoyed our journey from Utila to the small holiday resort town of Omoa. We bumbled our way across a fair chunk of Honduras in coaches, collectivos and chicken buses (we even managed to squeeze in a cyclo ride along the way!). Our Honduran travel mates were pretty friendly and there is certainly something ... read more

On arrival in Livingstone, on first sight there seemed few of the Garifunas about which were meant to populate the town. In one of those typical tourist type ways, development gives you some of the services you want but by doing so removes what you came to see. There´s is no real reason why this has to be the case but through rampant Capitalism and lack of sustainable development this is often the case. It´s the eternal search of many a backpacker to find the place of great interest, largelly unspoit which isn´t virtually impossible to reach or overly expensive. More on this later. The history and the politics of the town is very interesting and surprisingly their is a real lack of information posted in the town about it. As a result I came across ... read more
