Yesterday Liz provided Christina and me with a tour of the U.S. embassy in San Salvador. You will not see pictures of this tour posted on my travel blog because visitors are prohibited from bringing any recording devises on the premises. Personally I was quite impressed with the tour. The security of the embassy is unrivaled, yet subtle. Security cameras monitored our every step; armed security guards supplemented the U.S. Marines (though I doubt they needed the help). Christina and I had a pleasant chat with Liz’s immediate supervisor. She shared stories about various duty stations she had been assigned to. I was most impressed with my wife’s personal workspace, a corner office with a great view. It was immediately evident that Liz is well liked and respected by her coworkers; I am so proud of ... read more

so today i leave el salvador :( if this experience has left me with anything, it is to be grateful for what i have. i know i take advantage of everything i have, and then i see these people. These people have NOTHING. they barely have a house. This experience is going to make me see my life in a whole different way. I will now be soo much more appreciative for the things that i have and my family. I will be greatful that i have a family who loves me enough to care for me and feed me ( which can sometimes be a challenge). I am so greatful that i have the life i have and i would not change a thing about it. I love my life, my family, my friends, everyone! ... read more

Friday July 17 On Thursday we spent most of the day at the volunteer house because of the flu. We helped sort donations and i got to relax a bit. so i am not allowed to go to the malnourishment center any more because of the influenza. It is affecting sooo many people down here. So today i got to go to Las delicias and play with some children. Las delicias is a place run by the nuns were the poor kids can come and play. And we painted the library that the nuns are building down here. Today, I also got to make some home visits and help vaccinate some children (: IT was an amzing experiance! I even got to see my sweeties Veronica and Johanna at their home. I had no idea how ... read more

We swung up to San Salvador to visit my buddy Toby, who I met and got to know during my Semester in Egypt . He instructed us to go to a donut shop in 'Mexicano', and to give him a call once we arrived. After a slight delay with a hearing impaired taxi driver who did not know there was a donut shop in that part of town, we did arrive and give him a call (I usually just pay people to use their cell phones). He then took us one by one on his motorcycle to his new place. He is still working with the MCC but has been seconded to ANADES . He recently moved from his apartment and is now living with Jasmin's extended family: his girlfriend's grandmother, mother, 3 brothers, sister, nephew, ... read more

Wednesday July 15 So today i went to the Las Telicias area again. But today, i made home visits with a nurse. We checked in on babies one year and below. Today, we visited some of the poorest people in el salvador. It was very difficult for me to understand how thes people live their lives tthe way they do. Most of the house were made of trashbags and tin. If they were lucky they had some bricks. But I'm telling you, it was sure a sight to see. It was so sad. But the people were so friendly! Everyone was so happy and pleasant. And the whole time i was thinking...how can you be so happy? You must be miserable. But then i realized that they are used to this. For some of them..how they ... read more

After two hours of sleep, a four A.M. wake-up call, and an almost near death experience with a sub division gate, my cousin Jason and I boarded the plane to Atlanta. We endured the misery of listening to a baby scream bloody murder for the duration of the flight. Even the tunes of Michael Jackson could not muffle the obnoxious antics of that child. Our flight to El Salvador was delayed for two hours due to mechanical problems. Finally, after eleven total hours of travel we arrived in San Salvador. We were greeted by a tall Salvadoran chick and her posse waving a Howard sign. We call her Liz (Jason's wife who is doing an internship for the U.S. Embassy... reason for free living!) Did you know that El Salvador has a ten dollar admission fee? ... read more
