Our taxi showed up at 0710 - 20 minutes early - so we hurried our packing and shot out the door, collecting a list of Nicolas´ friend’s casas in various cities on the way. Rebecka and Karolina, two Swedes staying in the room next door, had the same plans to go to Viñales so we shared the CUC5 cab. The rain was coming down heavily and the roads on the way to the station were under anywhere between six inches and a few feet of water. Additionally - just to keep things interesting - the windscreen demister on the taxi wasn’t working. We managed to get tickets on the 0900 bus for the three and a half hour trip for CUC12 each but had over an hour to spare. The cafe was located upstairs from the ... read more

After Baracoa we went back to Santiago for a night. Colin wanted to visit a place called El Cobre, so we found ourselves another ¨illegal¨ taxi and headed off. This time round our car was a battered 1957 Dodge Plymouth. We took the back roads out for one or more of the following reasons: a) to avoid police checkpoints (remember he isnt meant to pick up tourists), b) to show us how bad the roads can be and how much they damage his car (read ask for more money), and c) to take longer to try and justify a higher price. El Cobre...I´m not sure what I was expecting but I was disappointed. For some reason we thought that this church had a copper dome, but I guess we had mis-read something somewhere. The cobre, copper, ... read more

On the Western side of the island, a few hours car trip from the capital, La Habana, we found a sleepy little town of two streets and mountain scenery. As you drive through it, you cannot help but wonder why the Lonely Planet trumpets it up so much; there's really not much there. Horse-and-carts, pigs, young and old Cubans sitting on verandahs watching the world pass or busying themselves with one project or another. As usual, we have to drive slowly through the township as there are people and animals and obstacles all over the road; no one is in any hurry to move out of the way. The main street is lined with little ageing houses, crooked fences and cracked sidewalks. Most residences in the town of Vinales are casas particulares, and they advertise their ... read more

So… after lots of false starts the Viñales adventure eventually takes place! Other adventurers joining the tenacious little English blonde: an equally tenacious German, (housemate of aforementioned blondie), suffering from a sore throat but determined not to let that stop the fun; another German who should be nicknamed “que lindo!!” for frequency of usage of said phrase, and completing the pack - the Denmarkian, único hombre who packed in such a rush he forgot toothbrush and anything warmer than a t-shirt. Viñales could be another country from Habana. Its is a small countryside town which benefits from the tourism which the natural beauty of the area attracts. Its in the Valle de Vinales, a UNESCO wolrd heritage site and a national park. Almost every house on the main street is a casa particular, yet it ... read more

The old man chewed his tobacco in a slimy clump and then spat it in a drooling mess to the ground. The pig laying next to him didn't move but the cat was quick to give it a lick. He was aged somewhere upwards of 100 years old. They think 120 but noone knows for sure. Found as an 11 year old boy in the bush in the Vinales mountains, his rescuers were long since dead but he lived on. His feet were tough as leather as he had never worn shoes and he looked pretty good for someone who had never been to a doctor. In fact nobody around these parts had ever been to a doctor. The local people believed in the healing powers of the mineral rich waters that flowed through the mountains. ... read more

We're in Pinar del Rio! Today we visited: - Vinales (Valley of Vinales) - Mural de la Prehistoria where an artist has painted an ugly mural on the side of the mountain - Casa del Veguero cigar plantation - Cueva del Indio (Indian cave boat ride) where we sailed through some caves. Our roast pig lunch was the best so far. ... read more

Another day in Paradise. We left Trinidad for Sorao stopping in Cienfuegos and Guama along the way. In Guama we took a boat ride to an Aboriginal village re-enactment. While having a drink in the bar, a frog jumped from a tourists bag onto my hand. It was about the size of my thumb nail and Erik said it was the smallest breed of frog in Cuba. It stayed on my hand long enough for few photos and then hopped away. It was so cute!! I'm also noticing a lot of small lizards everywhere. I try to catch them but they're too fast. We checked into our hotel in the afternoon. It's an ecolodge called Moka Ecolodge in Las Terrazas. I've never stayed in an ecolodge before -- the hotel is built around trees! ... read more

After an amazing week at Maria la Gorda, Laurence and I made our way to the small town of Viñales. We were excited for a change in scenery and some time away from the beach and eagerly awaited some hiking and biking in the countryside. Viñales is a burgeoning tourist town with loads of places to stay and things to do. It is situated amongst impressive limestone formations called Mogotes which are supposedly some of the best rock climbing in the western hemisphere. We were dropped of at Casa Benito by our van driver who sugested this small and friendly place. There we met a lovely couple from Toronto, Ian and Elizabeth who we shared many evening conversations with. The atmosphere was relaxed to say the least and the pastoral setting of the town was ... read more
