“That’s it! These two guys are going to fight each other to death during the trip. “ “You know, even if they do survive, that would be the end of their friendship…what do you think?” “Absolutely, they won’t see each other’s face after they return, I can bet.” “Well, let them go! We will watch the fun from the sideline”. This was the conversation, and possibly wishful thinking of our respective spouses before Dipankar and I headed out to our fun-trip to Costa Rica. The spouses had a choice of joining us, but they declined. No, Dipankar and I didn’t kill each other during the trip and we are very much alive. We had fun of a life-time and we are living happily ever after as good friends! This is a preamble. ***** I don’t know ... read more

Leaving Manual Antonio for Corcovado national park on the southwestern Osa peninsula felt like driving into a different country and a different era. The further down south we went, the less tourists (or locals) we saw. Aside from some massive palm oil plantations we passed in the first 100 km, it felt like we were driving into a Costa Rica as it must have been when eco-tourism to this country first started some forty years ago. Corcovado is the largest national park in Costa Rica and covers most of the Osa peninsula. As getting there takes a bit of effort and access is restricted to 400 people/day spread over 4 different entrances in the park, it felt completely different from the other parks we visited so far in Costa Rica. We decided to go in the ... read more

Pura Vida - the life slogan of the Ticos, people from Costa Rica. They use it in many situations and it basically means something like 'todo bien' or 'todo bem' in Brasil or 'tranquila' in Colombia. Relax! Chill! Maak je niet druk! From Bocas in Panama, we flew with a rather small, but colourful plane to San Jose, Costa Rica. We'd heard that San Jose is not very interesting (Costa Rica is all about nature), so we decided to continue straight on to one of the many National Parks/Reserves, Monteverde. We rented a car and driving was quite an experience, as many roads that lead to the parks are not paved and due to heavy rains there are a lot of potholes. It got even more interesting when we had to drive into the hills on ... read more

The Luna Llena hotel, located 100m above Montezuma village has been a great place to bring this 2mo. back-packing trek to a close. As in most of these Central American Hostel/Hotels, there’s always lots of interesting travelers from around the globe, generally leaning left of centre, and especially amongst the Americans who abhor Trump. You fall asleep and wake up to a chorus of howler monkeys; the sun emerges out of the ocean to the east. Over breakfast playful capuchin monkeys race across the banana palms onto the dining room roof to stare down at you sipping Costa Rican coffee…ohh and,…..but just try catching one of these monkeys on camera. There are iguanas everywhere in the trees and dusty paths. Lots of crazy bird life, too. Down on one of Montezuma’s many beautiful beaches there’s a cool ... read more

Geo: 9.15232, -83.7565After a very restful evening felt more like taking the hike all the way up to the Mirador. Last year we got the the Mirador during low tide and were able to see the complete Whale's Tail! This year the tide is not running in our favor but because we are starting out early, a great deal of it should be showing. As we were walking down the road, heard a woodpecker but were never able to find it in the trees as well as the toucans calling in the distance. This year seems we are not going to see as many toucans as we have in years past.Once we got to the bamboo forest, the road was pretty much in the shade and was cool and pleasant to walk as you were steadily climbing ... read more

J'aimerais voir votre photo!... read more

Salut! Frissons garantis... On pouvait monter jusqu'en haut! Celui que j'ai vu est un des plus haut de ... read more

Monteverde is on the Pacific side of the Costa Rican continental divide; being close to the divide means constant howling trade winds coming in from the east. If moisture builds up on the Caribbean side, it eventually gets pushed up and rolls over the divide and engulfs Monteverde in fast moving cloud and mist – like today. If it’s mostly dry on the Caribbean side the skies will clear, and from Cabinas Vista Al Golfo the place where I’m staying, you can see clear down to the coast some 50km away. Yesterday, 3 of us ‘young’uns’ from Vista Al Golfo, hiked up vertically to Cerro Amigos the highest peak in the area (1842m), accompanied by various friendly dogs and coincidentally Marcus, the guy who runs all the TV/telecom broadcasting paraphernalia at the summit. Marcus was kind ... read more

The best part of this 5-day stay on this central Pacific coast had to be the Hostel, “Wide Mouth Frog” (WMF): nice people, great guests from all over the globe, Danes, French and Canadians; swimming pool, everything tiled from all common areas and accommodations, to library and kitchens. (And being a lousy backpacker, I even booked myself into a single room rather than a dorm). Many of my fellow world travellers were somewhat luke warm on Costa Rica -- rumblings about too many “touristas”, declining authenticity, and more pricey than other central american states. On that thought, Manuel Antonio Park was absolutely beautiful, with picture perfect beaches……but by 8:00 am just one busload after the other, literally thousands of tourists, lots of them snapping pictures of spots of just vacated by wildlife, or of indiscernably shady spots ... read more

Costa Rica the smallest of the Central American States after Belize and El Salvador has a population of around 3.6 million about the same as Panama . It seems to have moulded itself as a destination of choice for tourists particularly the Americans and offers wonderful beaches and active participation in its many public and private parks and nature reserves. It has shielded itself from world troubles with no army , no palaces of Government and has become wealthy from coffee production. Costa Rica is a well established democracy celebrating over 120 years and has one of the highest standards of living in Central America . Having said all of that San Jose the capital did not float my boat! There is a different feel from the laid back Panama no pretty old town ( every ... read more
