Over Easter weekend in Samara they converted one of the local fields into a bull riding arena. The stadium was thrown up in a week and looked like it may collapse at any moment. Locals congregate in one of two places; the arena wall (which is a fence post) or in the arena itself! This is not your typical bull riding event, after the cowboys fall off the locals in the arena play dodge the bull!!!!... read more

We arrived in Samara beach on March 4th. The town of Samara is a small beach town, located on the Pacific Coast. The town itself is pretty secluded, surrounded by only 2 dirt roads leading out of town, and one paved road leading back to San Jose. Our local residents include wild horses, a socialite dog scene, howler monkeys, iguanas, and lots of crazy scooters. The doggie scene includes many collared dogs that are free to roam; which includes daily races with cars (running after their owners driving to work) and frequent beach trips to play in the waves and with buddies. Quite cute! We plan on being in Samara for 1 to 2 months. The TEFL course is held here and lasts 4 weeks. We'll see where we end up when all is said and ... read more

For the first month Rebecca took part in a TEFL course with 10 other girls. 10 girls working together could have been a recipe for disaster but luckily everyone got along and there weren't any problems. Most of the girls were from the east coast, 1 was from Wisconsin (go cheeseheads (2 if you include Rebecca)), 1 from France, and 1 from Argentina. . We took classes in a small building in the center of town. Each night we would teach to varying groups of locals. James and Bruno were frequent visitors to the cafe next to the school because the internet at home never worked. It didn't take long before Bruno became the TEFL mascot and James became the TEFL husband :) At the end of the course we had a graduation party at the ... read more

Casa Luna was an interesting apartment. Made up of 6 apartments and run by a local lady called Mayala aka 'the devil'. We paid a little extra for this place as it was supposed to have AC and secure WIFI. Well, the apartment did have AC. But, if you ran it, she wanted $1/hour or she would just come in and turn it off while you were out. The secure internet was the neighbors internet that had no password so all her guests could use it....when it worked! Oh yeah, and we got to share the apartment with some friendly giant cockroches that were partial to a cup of coffee! And each day we awoke to a nice cold shower of green mold. Other than that it was a great place LOL.... read more

Well its been a while I know, but we have been busy on our holiday, so sorry to those of you who were waiting for an update! I´ll pick up where Jon left off....Samara. This is our favourite place. We ended up staying for 6 nights and I pretty much got into a nice routine here. In the morning after a nice healthy breakfast Jon would head off to the beach as he was learning to surf (another activity that I coudn´t participate in) whilst I went to the local cafe and had a morning coffee. This cafe was on the beach under some nice palm trees, just heaven!! The place we were staying was like a fully self contained apartment. One night we had dinner at a restaurant on the beach that was renowned for ... read more
