Salut!

In about 24 hours, my family will be picking me up from Cameronal, which will mark the end of this chapter of my Central American vacation. So, I am writing this entry as a (most likely) final reflection on my time volunteering with the turtles. This volunteer project has been unlike any other experience of my life. Bits and pieces are recognizable, of course, but I really feel like I have spent the last two weeks transplanted in another world. Unlike some other travel and volunteering, working with the turtles involves a LOT of downtime. The experience of downtime is heightened by being in a remote location, virtually disconnected from the rest of the world. Because of that, the work and the play have both defined my time here. The work has been a little unlike ... read more

Even though I have no access to the internet, I am writing a blog entry about my first 40(ish) hours at my volunteer project with the turtles. I know how quickly the strange becomes familiar, and I want to capture some of my thoughts before I completely adapt to a routine here. My journey to Cameronal Wildlife Reserve started out pretty normally. I was driving to the bus stop by someone from the language school. Within minutes of getting dropped off at the bus station, another international traveler going to Playa Samara (a 20-something blond woman from Copenhagen) and I found each other. We were practically like magnets as we navigated the bus station – figuring out which bus was ours, how to check our luggage, and the other mores of the Costa Rican bus system. ... read more

We enjoyed a lazy day in Carrillo today: Jeff, Shae and Nikki went for a short drive south and discovered a small secluded beach area with big, black rock and crashing Pacific waves. It's here where Shae and Nik collected a couple dozen seashells; each with a unique color, shape and size. Dad spent a good portion of his day reading, while he did manage to venture off a time or two in hopes of finding the perfect subject to photograph. He was rather successful down at Playa (beach) and Puerto (port) Carrillo where he found a few native birds and some fishermen and their boats who were coming and going. Mom enjoyed the sun, laying on a lounge chair with a large glass of ice water with fresh lime, played Nikki in several rounds of ... read more

As the sun set on our adventure with the McLeod’s we were forced to face the bitter reality of life. After a week away, no matter where you’ve been and what you’ve been doing, going home is always a good feeling. Of course it is nice to sleep in one’s own bed and cook in a familiar kitchen but the backlog of laundry and other not so enjoyable aspects of life need to be dealt with eventually. This is especially true if the arrival of more guests is immanent and with the owner of the school emailing and calling about my response to his offer it was a stressful time to say the least. The Offer On the second last day of school, Victor, the owner called me to his office for a secret meeting. He ... read more
