After lunch we did a one-tank scuba dive at a site called the Visibles located West of the dog islands and known for the series of caves, ledges, shallow tunnels and overhangs. I saw some snapper, squirrelfish and barracudas. The site is rich in stags of fire coral that make it look like an orange landscape making the access difficult to the macro life. I saw beautiful green tunicates that I have never seen before. Then we packed up the boat quickly and headed on a 45nm ride back to St. Thomas in 2hr and 40 minutes. We finish the day with a wonderful dinner at “Oceana” one of the best restaurants with a view in St. Thomas. Now we sit for about eight days til the seas ease up.... read more

The hike starts at sea level stepping up through the wild bush and up stony steps into openings that lead to two main look outs with stunning views of the islands and clear Caribbean water. The hike loops down to the start point. After a big breakfast the Wasabi went out on a sea quest mission to bring some lobsters for dinner with no luck. The lobsters are taken by the commercial fishermen who sell exclusively to the restaurants in the minimum amount of 300 lobsters. We offered 100 bucks for 6 lobsters and were turned down. With no catch we went to the resorts restaurant that offers and incredible seafood buffet. The risotto ‘a-la-cart' was the highlight. I had strawberry homemade sorbet and fat free de-caf cappuccino to end the day...that explains how I gained ... read more

We left Peter Island behind us at noon right after owners and crew did the hike to the highest point of the island. We cruised the spectacular Sir Francis Drake Channel south of Tortola and along Salt, Cooper and Ginger Island towards Virgin Gorda. We logged 10nm in 1hour and 20 minutes and burned 174 gallons of fuel.... read more

... read more

We arrived early morning after an overnight passage. At 85 miles, it's just longer than a full day's sail so we thought we'd sail through the night instead. At 11pm, we had to reef heavily after going to fast and needing to slow down. With four boats doing the same we were comparing notes on how much more uncomfortable it felt taking the sail area down and wallowing more in the sea state. Still, we all made it across and had a restful day of catching up on rest. The customs was a thoroughly unpleasant experience here in Virgin Gorda. But after clearing in we set about exploring the island and making plans for exploring the Virgin Islands. It is excellent sailing here, if busy with huge fleets of charter boats based here. We went snorkelling ... read more

"The Baths" To get there and back, you have to swim. The boat docks and we jump out and take a swim to get onto Virgin Gorda Island. A tiny little hike through rocks and caves. The boat picks us up at the other end. We take time to enjoy the amazing water and take turns jumping off the boat. As we leave, we see giant skull faces in the rocks.... read more

Les ... read more

We spent the next week touring the different anchorages in Virgin Gorda, which is one of the largest islands of the BVI chain. The first anchorage we stopped at was Leverick Bay, one of the newest Marina complexes built in the area. It has a great pool complete with a pool bar and restaurant, a very reputable dive company which we planned on utilizing, and of course a Pusser’s store (which are so prevalent in the BVIs that it is almost ridiculous). So we took a mooring ball and decided to stay for a couple of days. Unfortunately it was really windy while we were there and the dive conditions were poor. The visibility was worse than it had ever been, thanks to the heavy rains washing out the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela. You could ... read more

The Baths are one of the coolest places to visit in Virgin Gorda, where giant granite boulders line the beach creating tidal pools, tunnels, arches, and grottoes. You can spend hours hiking around the Baths, and in fact we did. We decided to sail over to the southern end of Virgin Gorda to spend the day there- it was so much fun! The natural beauty created by this unique geologic formation is astounding, all set on a white beach with the sparkling blue of the Caribbean Ocean as the background. Wow! The giant boulders that make up the Baths are piled on top of each other like a house of cards, creating lots of opportunities for exploring and spelunking. So many nooks and crannies to discover. We wore our swim suits and spent the day romping ... read more

Hello there, and thanks for checking in on me. I'll consider this the starting point for my round-the-world trip. First stop was Tortola, the main island of the British Virgin Islands, and pretty much the hub from which getting to the other islands, as well as the U.S. islands, is made possible. Tortola is a pretty good place to really develop some hiking stamina as taxi cabs are really expensive (over $20 for a 4-mile transit) and I don't think there's more than 100 meters of flat surface on that entire island, except for the main road along the south shore. It's also a good place to go on a starvation diet as even a cheeseburger will cost you at least $12. I was walking about 10-miles per day for the three days that I was ... read more
