Having arrived in Bermuda on the 6th May, we've been here now for just shy of 3 weeks. We've seen several boats come in and depart on the same journey we're expecting to undertake - the Snark, Bavarian Spirit, Triple D, Otra Vida, and while they have been filling up with jerry cans of extra fuel, we have been waiting patiently for a better weather window. It's possibly a futile exercise as who knows when it's going to come. Daily emails from all those guys is telling us that there hasn't been a lot of wind around and when there is, it's often on the now. However, after receiving a slightly better window, we are planning on leaving tomorrow. Hence, my brief input into the blog to try to get everything up to date before doing ... read more

We arrived in St Maarten and had to wait for the bridge opening before entering into Simpson Bay Lagoon. The lagoon was very shallow and was a bit nerve racking once again seeing the depth gauge hit zero more than once. When I was up the mast doing a rig check I took some photos of a boat that was less lucky. We got our engine mounts changed in St Maarten to make them fresh and new and it has got rid of the vibration, and probably more comforting, the noise that came with it. St Maarten is incredibly touristy and with it very little charm. There are great chanlderies here and it's a good place to get work done on the boat. It is a favourite for cruise ships and its capital has dozens of ... read more

The passage to Bermuda started out as a very pleasant one. We had the wind on the beam and were making good way for the few days covering almost half our distance. The wind then backed and came onto the nose, relentlessly for the remainder of the trip. It took us a further 4 1/2 days to complete the remainder of the trip with some tacking and some motor sailing (depressingly). This with a few tears in the genoa meant for a more challenging passage than we'd imagined from looking at the original forecast. We also made good use of some of the extra fuel we had on board. With all that, when we did arrive, what a delightful arrival it was! We were met by Alice and Caducues who left at the same time as ... read more

We arrived early morning after an overnight passage. At 85 miles, it's just longer than a full day's sail so we thought we'd sail through the night instead. At 11pm, we had to reef heavily after going to fast and needing to slow down. With four boats doing the same we were comparing notes on how much more uncomfortable it felt taking the sail area down and wallowing more in the sea state. Still, we all made it across and had a restful day of catching up on rest. The customs was a thoroughly unpleasant experience here in Virgin Gorda. But after clearing in we set about exploring the island and making plans for exploring the Virgin Islands. It is excellent sailing here, if busy with huge fleets of charter boats based here. We went snorkelling ... read more

Anguilla's history has been quite a story to tell. In 1967, Britain granted Saint Kitts and Nevis full internal autonomy, and Anguilla was also incorporated into this, against the wishes of many Anguillians. This led a rebellion with a boat full of Anguillans heading to St Kitts with an American mercinary. There was guns fired with noone injured and since then Anguillan achieved what they were fighting for and were allowed to secede from St Kitts and Nevis and is now a British Overseas territory. It is said that they took particular umbridge to the Governor of St Kitts publicly stating that the Anguillans will do as they are told and that St Kitts is not a nation to be messed with. It's quite a flat island and is quite pricey with large exclusive resorts. It ... read more

We arrived in St Barts fitting between race weeks. St Bart's I think is worth all the hype. It's certainly one of the safest islands in the Caribbean and feels more like Monaco that the Caribbean. We didn't stay here long. We anchored in a gorgeous bay, Anse du Colombier in the North of the Island where the snorkelling was brilliant and vivid colours of the fish were remarkable. It was a pleasant walk into Gustavia and we geeked out over the small runway at the airport. We were told that it is one of the 10 most dangerous airports in the world. I haven't checked if that is true and on what measure but watching the take off and landings some how didn't quite look like they would make it. We met another family boat ... read more

Barbuda's 11 mile beach has to be one of the best in the Caribbean. The name indicates the length and the sand is the softest powder with a hint of pink given by the crustaceans local to here. It's not that easy to get here, unless you make use of the local hotel's helicopter. To sail here, the wind has to have no north in it otherwise there's an uncomfortable swell. We left Antigua early in the morning to arrive in Barbuda before midday with the sun behind us to ensure that we could navigate through the reefs and shallow water. The photos help to give an indication about the place. The town doesn't seem to get tourists at all. To get into Codrington there's a two mile boat ride to get past, which was incredibly ... read more

Having arrived in Antigua over three weeks ago, you might wonder what the place has to keep anyone here this long. Well actually the time has been spent working on rainmaker. We felt the need to give her lots of love before attempting to sail back across the Atlantic, especially as the way back will potentially be far more challenging. We've spent the time getting her hauled out to look as good as new, taking the opportunity to do some antifouling and other general maintenance. With her interior also been revamped she does look pretty good and has increased her homeliness a huge amount. As she's been out of the water we camped ourselves for a while in Harmony Hall, which was just delightful. We've also spent a bit of time in Nelson's dockyard, which is ... read more

It's not easy to show on the blog without creating lots of inputs where we've been exactly. So we arrived in Guadeloupe on 17th Feb and spent some time in Marie Galante, a small circular island South of Grande Terre (the East side of the butterfly), going to Point a Pitre (surprisingly similar feel to Southampton water), The Saintes (lovely) before going up to Deshaies to hop to the next island. For some reason we only appear to have photos for Marie Galante. The place itself is like going back to a different era. They cultivate a lot of sugar cane here and we visited one of the rum distilleries here. They pride themselves on their rum making techniques here which allows them to make rum stronger with their method. ... read more

Dominica was surprisingly enjoyable. Alexis, one of the PAYS organisation officials looked after us well, taking us up the Indian River and introducing us to Kenji who took us on a tour of the Island. We've been told repeatedly that if Christopher Columbus was to return to the Caribbean today, Dominica is the only island that he would recognise. The whole atmosphere of the place was very positive and we felt very settled very quickly here, staying much longer than the couple of days we thought we would. ... read more
