So on from the land of the playa to the country of Belize. We caught a dodgy Belizean bus from Chetamul in Mexico to Belize City. First impressions of Belize were not exactly how the Lonely Planet guide described (paradise). We hopped off the bus and were bombarded by taxi drivers wanting to take us somewhere. One good thing was that they spoke English, albeit with a hard to understand Jamaican type accent. Belize City was how I imagined a third world country to be. lyrical king is our islander. almost every white woman/group has one. in amburgeise, our hotel hired men to hang out at the beach. gene and elvis. they were friendly, moreso than the rest of the staff, and would get people drinks, and talk with everyone. there was still a definite sense that they were staff, tips were slipped into a hand when a drink was bought, but more friendly than the others. really, lyrical king is caye caulker's equivalent of that job. it's just more subtle. at first, i was very angry about this. i was angry that they would do [View Full Entry]

well, i officially have an ear infection. no more going in the water for me, fortunately the one thing i still really wanted to go was go kayaking through the mangroves and my ear shouldn't trouble that, so long as i don't tip. i just hope it's not an inner ear infection or flying will be agony. still, there is the vicodin... my camera's also defunct, and somehow one of my europe walking shoes disappeared from our room. so that's my share of disasters. i ended up getting really upset last night... i wasn't feeling well because of the ear and [View Full Entry]

my ears feels like it has water in it all the time. the volumes and tones of things are constantly changing. unless i can find medication to get rid of it, i'm going to need to stay out of the water the last few days, or flying is going to be hell. at least i have vicodin at home for the flight to london if naught else. i have convinced the party to abscond (i learned all the A's in my gre vocab book this morning!) to caye caulker. the swimming is much better here. a marvelous little bar is down [View Full Entry]

Sailing is the best decision I've made so far. Started out with breakfast at Herbal Tribe - just a bagel as I suspect that I was mildly hungover. Then up the boat and we were off. We have Sara and Alex (San Diego/Long Beach), John & Terry, Jamie and Philip, Matthew (London), Richard (England) and Thomas (Germany). Good group. Stop 1 was a snorkel in a channel. I'm finding my final morning here to be quite sad - I wish I had a month. I'm not at all ready to leave. Well - my feet are ready - I've never had such horrible blisters in my life - at least 3 on each foot. At least I'm getting on a boat where I won't have to wear shoes. August 19, 2005. We arrive at the ariport in Belize City and order 2 rum drinks to celebrate. They were SO strong! We took a puddle jumper to Ambergris Caye. The hotel was a nice, ocean front suite with a full kitchen. We immediately signed up for diving the next day - 2 local reef dives and 1 night dive. We settle in, take a dip in the ocean and head out for dinner. We ate at a nice restauant on the water. It started to rain so we sat inside but the view was still incredible. The island life is definitely suiting me well. Got up around 6 am when the guys woke me. We'd all been out to I and I bar the night before (mmm...Belekin Beer!) but Barbara (from Holland) and I went back not long after an island wide power outage at 10:30 pm. It was a hot and muggy night with rain and no fans - tough to pass out.
