So, as you know we made it to Belize.... Now we just had to get to Sittee River and after a nightmare with trying to get cash we made the choice to head to Hopkins as that was in the must sees of Belize, had a great beach and looked big enough for us to stock up with supplies ready for our week on our Robinson Crusoe island .... We'd been told by the lady at the bus stop that we just got off at the Hopkins Junction and walked either left or right to whichever set of accommodation we fancied, north or south end of the beach..... So the bus dropped us off at the junction at the top of the main road junction, not that of the town..... However we were oblivious to this ... read more

Chetumal, Mexico. This was to be the first of many times Hannah and I would arrive in a town with no-where to stay. At the bus terminal, I asked the nearest backpackers if they knew of a decent hotel/hostel. They gave us the name Maria Dolores. We took a taxi there and got ourselves a room - no air con, but a lovely clean (avocado!) bathroom, a tv and generous sized beds. We spent our evening planning the next part of our adventure with the help of the guidebook and Hannah's laptop. I had the inspired thought, that instead of killing time with Hannah in Honduras over the next two weeks, we could see if we could arrive on Utila early. Hannah thought it was a great idea - instead of the project, she could come ... read more

Diving the Great Blue Hole! Down to 40m+... Into the deep! The Great Blue Hole is one of the most iconic and legendary divespots in the world. It is unique and quite different from all the other dives I have done in that area. The Great Blue Hole does have the colourful maritime life as the divespots at Half moon caye and Turneffe Atoll. However diving the great blue hole is impressive. Going deep and into the deep blue. And it was the only place in belize where I saw Carribean Reef Sharks. I had two trips to the Great Blue Hole, on April 6th and 8th 2012. A good thing is worth doing it twice... Especially since the second dive after the great blue hole was Half Moon Caye Wall. Both dives there were magic. ... read more

Half Moon Caye Wall, April 6th and 8th 2012. The second dive after the Great Blue Hole dive. In my opinion the two most beautiful dives of my whole trip. Half Moon Caye Wall and Long Caye Aquarium has wonderful maritime life. The most graceful animals out there are the rays. Spotted eagle rays, a bit under 2 m wing span, and they are flying by effortlessly...Turtles, also gracious swimmers. And all the other nice fish and lobsers and corals out there...... read more

Hello again everyone, I'm back for part two of my travel blog which I will try to make significantly shorter as internet (and everything else here in Belize) is extortionate! You may notice a theme in this blog of me getting taken advantage of repeatedly and throwing away money, but please bear in mind that in spite of my bitter tone I have been having the most incredible time... So when I left you last time I was in a small town just outside of Palenque, and had just returned from seeing the ruins. Upon my return I bumped into a couple of lovely English ladies both of whom are 37 (I mention their age purely to highlight the variety of people I have been travelling with) who had invited me to take a tour of ... read more

We have just returned from a weeks sailing trip around the Sapodillas Cayes in Southern Belize. After travelling for almost a year and experiencing so many wonderful places and meeting so many great people sometimes it is difficult for things to really stand out as being extra special, although our week in Belize proved to be exactly that. We were aboard the 46 foot Catermaran ‘Las Sirenas’ which operates out of Rio Dulce in Guatemala. The week long trip started by taking us down the gorgeous canyon of the Rio Dulce (Sweet River) abundant with wildlife and scenes of traditional life such as fisherman casting their nets from small wooden canoes. Aboard the boat was ourselves, Dan from Alaska, Justin & Mackenzie from Washington, Saskia from California, Sarah, Jess & Kristine from UK. Our crew was ... read more

“The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it” – Rudyard Kipling I am currently sitting in a mall (urgh) in the deeply depressing town of La Ceiba on the coast of Northern Honduras waiting until we can take the Utila Princess (fondly known as the Vomit Comet) out across the choppy waters of the Bay of Honduras to Islas de la Bahia – the country’s top destination and apparently the best place in the Western hemisphere for diving.I’m trying to keep my expectations down but whale sharks (largest fish in the world) have made an appearance here some two months early in their feeding , mating and migration cycles and I am hoping beyond hope that I get the opportunity to dive with these behemoths of the sub-aqua world. Since my last ... read more

A heavily tanned and leathery humans back is what you look for. Looking at him you’d think he couldn’t be that old? But at 73 years of age Juni provides one of the most unique snorkelling trips you’ll ever do. You come here to Belize’s Caye Caulker to dive the Blue Hole, leaving, knowing full well that you won’t be whispering about how good the Blue Hole was. Instead telling everyone who’s heading this way to go and see the “fish whisperer” (A name Juni hates) Part of the English colonies, Belize still has Queen Elizabeth on every note. With that connection it makes Belize the only relief for non-Spanish speakers in Central America. Even with the ease of the English language we only visited two places. The first was Belize City. The former capital city ... read more

We arrive at the ferry port having pissed off the taxi driver who tried to rip us off but we gave what we were willing to give and not a penny more. We get to the ferry tetminal to be informed we have to pay port fees, and departure tax. Departure tax was always included in your flight but just our luck the rules changed for 2012, 3 days before our flight so off we march to the bank to pay 300 pesos so we are allowed to leave mexico. At the bank I see everyone get out their mexican visa... And I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. As I open my passport and can see clear as day the visa card I was so careful to keep safe which was ... read more
