Op ... read more

July 17 - Well, the sailing trip was somewhat different than I thought it would be. I had to bring my big backpack to the dock at 8am to be packed up on the boat, and then be back to sail at 9am. In the mean time I went back to my room and repacked my bag for the next few days and watched tv (of course). We sailed a little after 9am and got under way. It was a big group on the sailboat. Made it to Belize! This country is so different than Guatemala in both language and culture. It's probably the most laid back place I have ever been. After arriving in Belize city, I took a water taxi to Caye Caulker. This is a tiny reef island about an hour off the coast. The island has only three dirt roads: front st, middle st, and back st. You can walk anywhere you want in less than 20min, there are no cars just golf carts. The three of us found a beach front hotel for $10/person. Surprisingly, this is the first place I've stayed at that has hot and cold water. After exploring the island a bit, we walked up to the north side of the island where a hurricane back in the 60's or 70's split the ... read more

July 13 - Sadly, the sleep was poor and we had to get up early. We had some breakfast and then my mom and I had to say goodbye on the shuttle back to the airport. My opinion of Delta changed today. When I got in, I checked in at a kiosk, had to wait only five minutes for the woman to take my bag, and then got through security in about five minutes. Skillful. How can Atlanta be so much better than Zurich in this way? On the plane to Belize I talked a bit to the women sitting next to me, and her granddaughter. We decided to take a taxi together to the boats that go the surrounding islands. I was heading to Caye Caulker and they were off to San Pedro. It was ... read more

The Ambergris Caye is paradise. We arrived from Belize city on a buzzing Maya Island Air 5 passenger plane. The view of all the islands and of the barrier reef was spectaculor. Most people drive golf carts around town through the narrow streets and over the many pot holes and speed bumps but there are also an abundance of toyota previa vans (not sure why). Our plan for San Pedro was to relax on the beach, bike ride through town and of course dive the Blue Hole. We stayed at Mata Rocks Beach Resort just south of town. The hotel only has a dozen rooms all facing a pool and bar maybe 10 steps from the ocean. The white and blue theme makes it feel like you're in Greece. Mata Rocks staff are ridiculously friendly and ... read more

I never realised how tiring it would be doing all this exotic travelling! Goddamn it I need a holiday and to put The Bastard down for more than a couple of days - so I decide to head to Belize early and stay there for a full week and maybe do my PADI so i can scuba dive (its a whole different world down there folks - according to every dive bore i've ever met...) I get to Belize in about five hours and get ripped off by another money exchange guy -when will I learn??.... and then get a little boat to Caye Caulker one of the small islands off the mainland that pretty much everyone has said is the very best bit of Belize. It really is paradise – travel cliche alert - the ... read more

Helloo everyone, just thought we'd take some time away from lying on the beach with rum punch in our hands, with no concept of time and not really knowing what day it is ;) Where to start ay?! I know we have been here a week (feels alot longer) and we havent even blogged yet! We arrived into Cancun mexico a week ago yesterday and caught a ferry over to a small island called Isla Mujeres, very nice! White sand, turquoise water, amazing :) We decided to stay a couple nights there, which consisted of eating breakfast in swinging chairs on the beach, swimming in the brightest water i have ever seen and relaxing on the docks! We actually watched some locals catch fish with nothing but a fishing line and a hook the first night, ... read more

Yesterday was a lazy day. We rode bikes around the island in the morning and went for a swim in the pool. We sat on the porch a bit and went for a swim in the ocean. There is a falling down pier that had some cool fish swimming around by it but the whole split area where it is good swimming is filled with trash and beer bottles. We cooked up some of the fish we caught for lunch. It was good but had lots of bones in it. For dinner we brought the rest of the fish to Roses where they grilled it up for us and we just ordered some sides to go with it. Today we went on a full day snorkel tour on a big sail boat. Our first stop was ... read more

We started our reef fishing trip at 8 AM. We hired a guide from Raggamuffin Tours. He had the poles and boat and we were off. Our first stop was for gas for the boat then we drove over to Chapel Caye were the caretakers of the island used a net to catch us a bunch of sardines. We drove out to an area where you could fish and used the sardines as bait. We were catching Silk Snappers. Our guide was catching a bunch just using a line and a rubber finger cover. They don't use poles here because they get in the way. We used the poles though and had fun. About halfway through the morning a storm roled through and we had to pack everything up quick and take cover. The water pelted ... read more

We had breakfast at our hotel this morning since it was included in the room price. We took the hotel van to the marine terminal and checked our bags to Caye Caulker. Then we hopped in a cab and went to the rum factory. The tours only run during the week but we went through the museum and you could see into to themain processing area through a window. We bought a bottle of the three barrel rum (aged three years) the cheap rum was one barrel and there was also a five barrel. There were some bottles of over proof rum which we left on the shelf. We had the cab driver bring us to a grocery store before heading back to catch the boat. This turned out to be a good idea. The food ... read more
