Yesterday was a lazy day. We rode bikes around the island in the morning and went for a swim in the pool. We sat on the porch a bit and went for a swim in the ocean. There is a falling down pier that had some cool fish swimming around by it but the whole split area where it is good swimming is filled with trash and beer bottles. We cooked up some of the fish we caught for lunch. It was good but had lots of bones in it. For dinner we brought the rest of the fish to Roses where they grilled it up for us and we just ordered some sides to go with it. Today we went on a full day snorkel tour on a big sail boat. Our first stop was ... read more

We started our reef fishing trip at 8 AM. We hired a guide from Raggamuffin Tours. He had the poles and boat and we were off. Our first stop was for gas for the boat then we drove over to Chapel Caye were the caretakers of the island used a net to catch us a bunch of sardines. We drove out to an area where you could fish and used the sardines as bait. We were catching Silk Snappers. Our guide was catching a bunch just using a line and a rubber finger cover. They don't use poles here because they get in the way. We used the poles though and had fun. About halfway through the morning a storm roled through and we had to pack everything up quick and take cover. The water pelted ... read more

We had breakfast at our hotel this morning since it was included in the room price. We took the hotel van to the marine terminal and checked our bags to Caye Caulker. Then we hopped in a cab and went to the rum factory. The tours only run during the week but we went through the museum and you could see into to themain processing area through a window. We bought a bottle of the three barrel rum (aged three years) the cheap rum was one barrel and there was also a five barrel. There were some bottles of over proof rum which we left on the shelf. We had the cab driver bring us to a grocery store before heading back to catch the boat. This turned out to be a good idea. The food ... read more

Diving the Great Blue Hole! Down to 40m+... Into the deep! The Great Blue Hole is one of the most iconic and legendary divespots in the world. It is unique and quite different from all the other dives I have done in that area. The Great Blue Hole does have the colourful maritime life as the divespots at Half moon caye and Turneffe Atoll. However diving the great blue hole is impressive. Going deep and into the deep blue. And it was the only place in belize where I saw Carribean Reef Sharks. I had two trips to the Great Blue Hole, on April 6th and 8th 2012. A good thing is worth doing it twice... Especially since the second dive after the great blue hole was Half Moon Caye Wall. Both dives there were magic. ... read more

Half Moon Caye Wall, April 6th and 8th 2012. The second dive after the Great Blue Hole dive. In my opinion the two most beautiful dives of my whole trip. Half Moon Caye Wall and Long Caye Aquarium has wonderful maritime life. The most graceful animals out there are the rays. Spotted eagle rays, a bit under 2 m wing span, and they are flying by effortlessly...Turtles, also gracious swimmers. And all the other nice fish and lobsers and corals out there...... read more

Hello again everyone, I'm back for part two of my travel blog which I will try to make significantly shorter as internet (and everything else here in Belize) is extortionate! You may notice a theme in this blog of me getting taken advantage of repeatedly and throwing away money, but please bear in mind that in spite of my bitter tone I have been having the most incredible time... So when I left you last time I was in a small town just outside of Palenque, and had just returned from seeing the ruins. Upon my return I bumped into a couple of lovely English ladies both of whom are 37 (I mention their age purely to highlight the variety of people I have been travelling with) who had invited me to take a tour of ... read more

A heavily tanned and leathery humans back is what you look for. Looking at him you’d think he couldn’t be that old? But at 73 years of age Juni provides one of the most unique snorkelling trips you’ll ever do. You come here to Belize’s Caye Caulker to dive the Blue Hole, leaving, knowing full well that you won’t be whispering about how good the Blue Hole was. Instead telling everyone who’s heading this way to go and see the “fish whisperer” (A name Juni hates) Part of the English colonies, Belize still has Queen Elizabeth on every note. With that connection it makes Belize the only relief for non-Spanish speakers in Central America. Even with the ease of the English language we only visited two places. The first was Belize City. The former capital city ... read more

Day 4 Today turned out to be a bit of a chill day on the beautiful island of Caye Caulker, I spent the morning walking round the island. A couple of years ago the 1 island became 2 islands when a hurricane ripped through it and cleared a path through part of it. The waves then rushed in and the current running through this section is so strong that it probably won’t join up again. But the good thing is that this area known as the split is a great place to snorkel and I did this today amongst the mangroves. The island is now only about 1 km long and in its widest point less than ½ km wide. What I like about it is the sandy streets and that there are no cars. ... read more

I spent all of day 2 travelling from Tulum to Caye Caulker and I’ve including the details in the boring bits below for those of you who do not venture this way in the future. At night I was faced with the usual problem of finding a veggie meal and ended up ordering a veggie burger that did’t actually contain a burger! Just salad, wouldn’t that be a sandwich! The next day I had booked a whole day snorkelling package which was amazing and ticked off another thing on my bucker list - swimming with sharks:-) The tour started at the Hol shan marine reserve and the guide took us across some fab coral with plenty of marine life. At one point I swam down to within 50 cm of a green moray eel they are ... read more

I know the next thing I should blog about was my last week of school, that ended last Friday. But to be honest - I was SO busy with end of school stuff, packing, trip planning and hanging out with Saima who got here last Tuesday - that I had no time for writing blogs! Plus, I still haven't totally processed the whole experience yet so you may just have to wait for a coffee date to hear about how that went. Suffice it to say, the last week was busy, fun, fast, and full of Christmas pageant practices. Leaving the students was really hard, I wish I could stay and finish the year, despite their craziness. It was so nice to finish all my work and actually leave for a trip where I wouldn't spend ... read more
