"You want to take me on a cruise? Are you kidding me? Next thing I know you'll want to take me to Hawaii or lord forbid VEGAS!" "Just calm down Andrea," he says. "I thought you might actually benefit from a vacation. You know, something relaxing, self indulgent....easy." Those are the last three words that come to mind when I plan a trip. I thought to myself, "I'm a traveler, not a vacationer." Travelers come home completely wiped out from exhaution due to bad beds in cheap hotels. Travelers come home depressed because their adventure is over and they're faced with their reality. Travelers come home sick from eating street food too tempting to resist. They come home with a backpack stuffed with filthy t-shirts and socks worn inside out. They come home feeling accomplished, more ... read more

It used to be that we came regularly to Nassau. It was the place the kids flew into for Christmas and spring break from school, or the place we chose to do check-in formalities with the Bahamian government. While it is a big and dusty city, by Bahamian standards, we always found fun things to do like dinghying the canal into Paradise Island to try our luck at the casinos, or meandering down to Potter Cay for fresh local vegetables and conch salad. High church holidays like Christmas, All Saints and Easter have been celebrated here with GREAT pomp and circumstance. Sea planes landed in the harbor in those days so you had to watch where you anchored. These days we mostly by-pass Nassau for the quieter out islands. We like checking-in in small places like ... read more

We made it! Well, it is hard to believe but we finally left the US and are now writing you from the Bahamas! We definitely picked the right weather window as we had a perfect crossing of the gulf stream. We had enough wind to put up the sails but not enough to have rough seas. We left with 2 other boats (Wind Dust and Goosebumps) at 6:30AM on Tuesday, February 22nd. As this was a great weather window there were quite a few other boats in sight as well for the crossing. One of the boats was Trumpetr who are friends of our friends on S/V Heather that we had met when in Annapolis. We actually met them in the Laundromat in Miami so they were another boat that we touched base with a few ... read more

Lose your 17 layers of clothing, stop sloshing around and park the woolly mammoth booths.. Trade it all in for flip flops and your skimpy attire! Unhook from the regularity and free yourself from the mundane.... This morning, when we turned on the radio to collect our weather information, our routers provided a quick update on the freezing storms hitting the mid-west and travelling towards the north-eastern coast of the US and Canada. Today is one of those days where we reflect on our surroundings in appreciation for the privileged way that we live. For the past several days, we have been anchored in a beautiful little lagoon, surrounded by turquoise warm waters and fair skies. The warm ocean breezes top the 80’s during the day and are a pleasant 65-70 during our slumber hours. ... read more

4 am...that's how early I woke up this morning. With two duffel bags just under 50 lbs, I made it out of the Philadelphia airport and 2 1/2 hours later landed in Orlando. After about a 2 hour layover, I arrived in Nassau around 2:45. First off, the weather is incredible here. About high 70's and sunny!!! What a nice change from snow and 30 degree weather. Another weird thing about the Bahamas is that they drive on the opposite side of the road. But not just that, they also have 2 different types of cars. You can choose what side of the car you want the sterring wheel....all I can say is that I'm very confused! I'm staying in a hotel called the Comfort Suites on Paradise Island. I have never been to the Bahamas ... read more

The following day, our first port of call was Nassau, the Bahamas. I was still waking up at 4.00 in the morning, so actually saw sunrise and sailing into Nassau. I was expecting something exotic to be honest, even the name is exotic. However, it lacked the “Wow Factor” as its very poor one side of the river, and very rich the other side with some truly beautiful houses. The Town is small and quite dingy and everyone seems to live on subsistence. I'd booked a snorkelling tour off a catamaran in the morning which I thought would have been great underwater viewing – even that was disappointing as the sea bed was a dirty brown, hardly any corral worth mentioning, although there were some beautiful fish. Unfortunately, due to the weather still not being really ... read more

Junk Junk Junkanoo, Junk Junk Junkanoo.... This is the rhythm that bellows threw the streets of downtown Nassau as thousands of people gather to view an incredible array of floats, costumes and dancers surrounded by musicians blowing their trumpets and horns, clanging their bells and pounding their drums to the beat of joyful songs. You can’t help but join into the beat and sway side to side as if you were part of it all...because you ARE part of it all!!! This year, we were privileged to be in Nassau during this annual festival. Similar to Mardi Gras in the southern US and Brazil’s festival in Rio de Janeiro, this is the mark of the Bahamas and what a colourful one it is indeed. We were mesmerised by the beauty of their costumes and hypnotised by ... read more

For a change, and upon request, I didn't attend Cup Match in Bermuda this year for my birthday. I went to the Bahamas instead. We stayed at the Wyndham Nassau resort in a room with a balcony and great views overlooking poolside and the ocean. The food at the Wyndham was mostly mediocre and overpriced; though best at the grill restaurant outside, despite the constant battle with flies. The bartenders at the swim-up bars made pretty good drinks, though little conversation. Fortunately the vaunted Fish Fry (actually kind of a strip mall of presumably locally-owned restaurants) was nearby with really good fare at reasonable prices. The macaroni and cheese was just like my mama used to make! A short bus trip downtown yielded the usual souvenir market, crammed with shoppers fresh off cruise ships buying fake ... read more
