(I've been too busy or (truthfully) lazy to get this blog entry done, so it's long after the trip was over. I decided to finish it for Jan, Dan and Marilyn) Our last full day in Paradise we rented a boat and captain for 4 hours. Our captain was Too Tall Derrick, a real nice guy. He took us on a tour of Paradise Island and a couple of the other islands. Once again, it was a perfect day, sunny and 81 degrees. After seeing the two islands where they filmed the classic TV series "Gilligan's Island," Too Tall asked if we wanted to do a little fishing. After about 10 minutes, Dan and I passed the poles to the wives and that's when fish were caught. Marilyn pulled in a fish every couple minutes. They ... read more

After lounging around a good part of the day swimming and getting some sun, we decided that we would visit the Rum Bahamas Festival in Nassau. It was a weekend long event with many rum distillers showing their wares. It was at a very interesting location, Fort Charlotte. The fort dates back to British Colonial times, built in the late 1700's. It's built on a hill that's the highest point around Nassau. It's kind of a ruin now and a cool location for the festival. The whole festival wound around the fort. There were many booths offering rum samples and all kinds of tropical rum drinks. There were a few bands playing Bahamian music and some other performers roving around. After sampling a few of the rums, Dan and I went for a drink made from ... read more

Modern air travel is miraclulous and miserable. If you're old enough to remember when all airplanes had propellers, which I am, it's amazing to consider that you can leave 30 degrees and snow and be in 83 degrees in sun in a matter of a couple hours if...everything goes well. That's where the miserable part can come in. It seems from our experience that it's damn near a 50-50 proposition for everything to go as scheduled, especially when you can't get direct flights. Changing planes just about guarantees one of them will be late for some reason. Yesterday it was the flight from Charlotte to Nassau. Thunderstorms in Charlotte delayed our departure for 2 hours. Then when we finally got to Atlantis, they had no record of our reservation booked through booking.com. Two more hours later, ... read more

It's time Jan got a little payback for taking such great care of me after having total hip replacement surgery on December 27th. Without her help I would have gone to a rehab facility rather than home. It sure was nice to go home. She treated my surgical wound every day until the staples were removed and the doctor was amazed how well it had healed. She waited on me hand and foot...literally. I couldn't put a sock or shoe on my right foot for over 3 weeks. So, this little trip is a bit of a thank you to her. We have done quite a few winter trips to nice warm places for longer than this one in the past years since my retirement and we were planning a trip to Tahiti and Bora Bora ... read more

Mantis Shrimp with eggs David Sanchez had found a mantis shrimp with eggs and shared with Steve the day before. Steve took me to it today but the mantis was very shy in the hole. I moved on and run into Diane who showed me a different color garden eel. I spent some time with them. There was one red one within the yellow ones. Diane told me later that it was not mating colors that it could be a different species. I saw 2 with holes very close to each other and I saw them touching faces. My photo is not so good but I got proof of life. As I got close the smaller one went into the hole and never went out again..and I didn’t feel like waiting for it to go back ... read more

Up early again, excited to arrive in the port of Nassau. I remember staying in Nassau with BA and the crew hotel overlooked the beach toward the port, I used to get up early to watch the massive cruise ships manoeuvring their way through the barrow channel, often five or more ships arriving after each other. Poor Alex wasn't getting a lay in this trip! Off for breakfast the wandered off the ship for a look around the shops in Nassau. After two minutes in the famous straw market, got bored with the calls of "hey pretty lady you want to buy something?" if you so much as glanced at anything on the stall. Wandered along Bay St and found...wait for it...the Havaiana shop, a whole shop dedicated to flip flops in a wonderful array of ... read more

17/5/13 Nassau, Bahamas Avast there me hearties! Up, fed and out, Nassau awaits, the proper pirate stronghold, home of Blackbeard and other fearsome and fascinating buccaneers of the high seas. Arrrr Jim lad this be the place I wants to see. First though we had to get off, walk the plank I mean along the pier, go through the welcome centre, run the gauntlets of taxi touts, hair braiding ladies, tour touts and eventually escape through the gates and out into the city. Once more the line of jewellery and souvenir shops but we had a map and things to see so we carried onwards. We had a quick look in the straw market, which was basically a large building full of craft and souvenir stalls with very forceful ladies trying to get you to buy ... read more

With my blogs, I aim to capture out of the ordinary experiences, travel off the beaten path, provide insight to local culture, and highlight alternative perspectives. From a worldly, cultured standpoint, the epitome of a conventional, predictable, and an uninspiring escapade would be to take a cruise. However, I am sure that if you stumbled across a four night cruise to the Bahamas for less than $250 leaving from a nearby port, you couldn’t resist either. Never having been on a cruise, I had some preconceived expectations. I imagined I would spend the entirety of the cruise on the top deck, in a lawn chair with a Miami Vice in my hand (half piña colada half strawberry daiquiri). Occasionally I would dip in the pool to cool off and if that got old, I would read ... read more
