It St Patricks Day so I had an Ireland rugby shirt on!! After two days going up the Beagle channel and then across the Drake's passage, which was extremely kind to us and so was nick named the "Drake Lake". We arrive at the Russian base at Bellinghausen, on the south shetland islands in the afternoon and it is decided there is time for a quick landing to look around and stretch the legs. We get on the zodiacs, I was in the first one!! Not that I was so excited like a little kid or anything! The temperature is abou 5C, but it always seemed warm as we had thermals, fleeces, coats, hats and gloves. Notice it is relatively far North so very little snow about in the photos. An early start to get checked out of the hotel as today we are boarding our vessel to Antarctica ... the day is finally here to face the notaurious Drake's Passage. There are lots of conversations at breakfast about what sea sickness tablets to take or do you risk not taking anything? We start the day with introducing ourselves to the rest of the group in 90 secs. ... you are not allowed to mention work but must say why are you here and what do you want to get out of it. For me this was all about the leadership journey that I am on which started back in Daventer and will continue for the next 12 months. I spoke about how I want to understand what my story will be and how will I ... read more

Today I am a team leader for 8 of us on a walk up a glacier just behind our hotel in Ushuaia. The team leaders had a briefing last night, around a flipchart with a hand drawn map on it and then given some top tips and told to get on with it !! I had been around all my team members last night to make sure they knew who I was and more importantly so I knew who they were. This exercise was all about seeing how physically capable everyone was and getting to know each other. All the AkzoNobel people were split up so it was all new for everyone. I was in one of the later groups, as the different groups set off every 15 mins from 7.30 am, so thought I would ... read more

Today we get aup at 3am to catch a 5 hour flight to Ushuaia ... there is not a lot of news today! Otherthan for those of you who are nervous of flying should give this a miss as the landing in Ushuaia was pretty horrendus as it was very cloudy, you get the odd glimpse of snowy mountain tops in amongst the cloud and then the plane drops and bucks and then there is the sea - full of white caps! It seems to take an age to get down to ground and then suddenly it all clears and we see the sea and pray that the runway is on the coast !! We land safetly in a howling gale and its freezing - we are at the bottom of the world. Now Antarctica is ... read more

I get my first texts in Argentina and the Benelux contingent have made it and are at the hotel. So I make my own way from the airport, its only 30 mins and Carlos has done a great job in preparations telling us which taxi company to use and booking a nice hotel - lucky to have a team member who lives in Buenos Aires. At the hotel we all meet up in the lobby and head for a walking tour of the city that Carlos's secretary recommended - see the pictures! There is so much energy in the group and we are all comparing stories and getting to know each other, it feels like I have met everyone loads of times but we had all just met for 3 days in Amsterdam. Its a good ... read more

We have all started arriviing in Buenos Aires, the excitement is building!! It is a long old flight but I am now fidgeting around in my seat on the plane wondering how this expedition is going to turn out, will the 12 Akzonobel people all get on, will I have any luggage .... the normal worries ! But then the thought that I am going to Antarctica .. I can't believe it is here now. For anyone who knows me you wold not believe that I have been busily writing in my journal on the plane. I am also reading a book titled "To the Desert and Back" by Philip Mirvas. This is where the Leadership bit comes in to this whole expedition - it really gets you thinking or reflecting. I have been writing lots ... read more

Well what a hectic day it has been sorting out the last few things at work, finishing off my packing and then getting to the airport. The good news is I am sitting in the departure lounge writing this now. But it was nearly a very different story as when I went to do on-line check-in this morning; there was no flight from Newcastle to Heathrow but there was Heathrow to Buenos Aires and back. So I rang BA to find out what was going on and they said the travel agent had cancelled it !! Just what you need to hear so as you can imagine I went through the roof, how will I make it to Antarctica but luckily there was still availability on the flight and I got it booked and all is ... read more

Today is is an emotional rollercoaster as it is so close to departure day that I have butterflies in my tummy with excitement but then I have sadness in my heart as I have just said good by to my family. I will not see them for just over 3 weeks, I will have email and phone contact for another few days but once we get on the boat from Ushuaia next Sunday then there will be no contact. In this day and age having no contact is very strange to cope with. Also you have to consider frieghtening things as a family - would you want to know if anything tradegic had happened at home even if you could not do anything about it and you could not return home, so all you could do ... read more

Introducing Robert Swan

Robert Swan is leading our expedition to Antarctica. Now that he is not walking to the North or South pole he runs an organisation called 2041 which is raising awareness of Antarctica with the aim of protecting it as a wilderness for ever. The reason for this 2041 name is that the treaty that protects Antarctica runs out in 2041 so by then we need to have enough influential people wanting to protect it as well. See www.2041.com. Robert is also sailing around the world promoting the use of renewable energy by calling in at ports and talking to Schools, Universities, Industries and telling his story and raising the profile. The aim is that we will not be reliant on fossil fuels by 2041 so there will not be the requirement for this beautiful continent to ... read more

I am off to Antarctica in under 3 weeks ... the reality is just starting to set in on how amazing this program is going to be. My company AkzoNobel are running a year long Leadership On The Edge program which includes a two week expedition to Antarctica with the Polar explorer Robert Swan. This is a group of 12 employees all just starting to bond as one team but have only met for 4 days in the Netherlands, but we have one common goal .. to be successful and we are all facing the same challenge of what will Antarctica throw at us. To be as prepared as possible we have been recommended what kit to buy but still I have a couple of things to get but all is in hand I hope! We ... read more
