Africa » Namibia December 2nd 2008

Willkommen in Namibia! Namibia was previously a German colony (Deutsch Südwest Afrika) and the German influence is everywhere -- architecture, food, language... In several cities, German is even the preferred language to English and it was fun talking to fourth-generation Namibians whose mother tongue is German. It was so crazy to be in the middle of cafe with Bienenstich or a Kneipe with a Weissbier talking German to the waiter and realize that we're in the middle of Africa! But that wasn't all that Namibia had to offer. It has some of the most remarkable landscapes we've seen and we saw beautiful wildlife. It also has a special remoteness that creates a true sense of the vastness of Africa. We arrived in Windhoek after an uncomfortable 22-hour bus ride from Cape Town. As you may have ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » North » Amman November 4th 2008

OK - I've gotta start this out with WOO-HOO!!!!!! PRESIDENT OBAMA! That is the news I woke up to this morning! Thank God the "reign of terror" has ended! Back to blogging - WELCOME TO JORDAN! We decided to "cash in" on some of the Hyatt points that I gathered throughout the years while travelling for Lehman. I may have lost all of my stock, but I at least have my hotel points - thanks, Dick! In any case, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt, Jordan and had a lovely time. It was a real treat - of course there were the special things like a pool, sauna, big comfy beds... There were also a number of smaller luxuries, e.g. Western instead of squat toilets and toilet tissue to boot! They also had something other than ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo October 30th 2008

Egypt is a crazy, mystifying country. It is probably the most historically-fascinating stop on our trip so far, but it was probably also the most stressful. All-in-all it was a great week that we will look back on with amazement for years to come. We arrived in Cairo at about 3:30 in the morning after taking a night bus from the South in Egypt. We were exhausted, but we had met a lovely couple on the bus from Jordan and we all managed to find a place to stay without too much pain. The next day Florian and I got our bearings and walked around a lot in the City. The poverty, pollution and unsanitary conditions here were surprising. Perhaps my expectations were influenced by the wealth of the Egypt in the past - the present ... read more

So we made it! That in itself was challenging - border control is STRICT. You are grilled VERY thoroughly here. After we went through our first round of questions, Florian's entrance was approved and our Aussie travel buddy Leah and I were held back for a couple of hours for more questions. In my case, I think it was my passport photo - I look really mean on it. Never mind - main thing is, we made it! We spent most of our time in Jerusalem & Bethlehem. It is hard to sum up how we found it -- exhilarating, overwhelming, inspiring, intense ... Religion & politics are in the fore- & background of life here. While disagreements & tension abound, coexistence & respect are also apparent. It's pretty common, for example, to see a Muslim ... read more

Middle East » Lebanon » Beirut October 18th 2008

We had a very short, but sweet (!), trip to Lebanon. After Syria, Lebanon felt very modern. For example, we hadn't seen a Starbucks, McDonalds (or any chain store) or a "cool" area of town. In Lebanon all was different and we felt like we were in a very Western city. Still, there is a very sad side to Lebanon, which also is very apparent. In Beirut there are traces of the war that stand out prominently against the most beautiful and modern areas of town (especially - see the hotel pic - how much has changed in the past couple of years). Not taking any "sides", I just find it sad. In particular because I have two very lovely friends from Beirut, who I have known for years. My personal connections bring the situation, perhaps, ... read more

Middle East » Syria October 15th 2008

After a few more buses we arrived in Syria! Aleppo was our first stop - it is the 2nd biggest city in Syria and considered the most conservative -- you see a lot of women in chadors with their full face and bodies covered. We went to the old citadel and also the big mosque. As you can see, I had to don some "special clothes" while there! Even incognito, there was a group of kids and teenagers who were so curious about us. They kept saying "hello" and wanted a picture with us. And I thought I looked inconspicuous in the chador! I guess a tourist will always stand out... The people-watching here is fascinating! The women in different types of chador and the men in different types of Arab dress. There is much more ... read more

Middle East » Turkey October 6th 2008

So, after the small diversions in Greece we made it to Turkey! Ephesus Our first stop was the ruins of Ephesus. Ephesus has an amazing history - it was founded in the 7th century BC by a cult who worshiped a fertility goddess (Girl Power!). It became famous when the Romans took over, and it kept a woman as its goddess embodied by Artemis (goddess of fertility and hunting). Later, under the influence of the Christians, Maria became the central figure here. At its peak the population surpassed 200,000. Unfortunately it isn't terribly well preserved, but what is left is beautiful. Pamukkale We also went to Pamukkale, which is a geological wonder. There are thick white layers of limestone cascading down the mountain slope and resembles a frozen waterfall. Istanbul Istanbul is a fascinating combination of ... read more

So, we *thought* thıs entry would be about our fırst days ın Turkey, but... we got stranded on a desert island. Well - not exactly. On Tuesday we started ferry-hoppıng through a few ıslands (Mykonos, Syrius, Kos) to get to Turkey. We were so proud of ourselves for navigating a route - they have very irregular schedules durıng the "off-season". Anyway, on Wednesday we got off the boat in what we thought was Syrius - only to find out that we were on the wrong island!!! Turned out that we would have to wait till Friday to get the next boat to Syrius and then the connecting ferries to get us to Turkey. There are worse things than being stranded on a Greek island and we had a truly lovely time. There are no tourists on ... read more

Europe » Greece September 23rd 2008

So - we've had a lot to do to get to this point - but now we are really on our way! For the past few weeks we've been taking care of the logistics of leaving NY and visiting friends and family in the US and Germany. It was busy and wonderful. On Saturday we arrived in Athens and did the mandatory visit to the Acropolis. Besides the Parthenon, our most exciting experience there was that our hotel turned out to have nightly and, well, HOURLY guests. Not something we expected, but it certainly added a bit of "color"! The next day we arrived to Santorini, which is, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful of the Greek islands. Unfortunately we arrived on the first day of the winter rains, but it was very dramatic - ... read more

Hello Friends & Family, We're in our last two weeks "home" before we take our first steps towards the big adventure. We are currently doing all of the "boring" stuff, e.g. vaccinations, bank accounts, packing our apartments, forwarding mail... the stuff that isn't fun to read about! There is much more to come, but this is a start! xo, H & F P.S. In the mean time, we're adding a few pics from our trips to Bermuda and Rio earlier in the year... ... read more
