Our Passion
I really enjoyed this blog as we both have the passion for traveling. What a great experience to share with others. I spoke to my cousin's 8th grade class and was given 35-40 minutes (whole class period) and still ran out of time as the students had so many questions for me. We are getting very excited about coming back in early September to Hangzhou.

"Girl in the Picture" book
I did read the book, but unfortunately not until I was back in Thailand. I agree, it did explain a lot about the religion. It also explained a lot about her treatment after the war by the government, which I found even more interesting.

Cao Dai Temple
Did you read the book about the girl in the picture? The famous photo of the girl being burned from Napalm. The Cao Dai Temple was in that area and it was well explained in that book. Very good read. I bought a few books for cheap while in Vietnam about the war to get different perspectives.

Making sense of it all...
To get a full perspective, you really have to go back to the 1950's. The Korean War; Ho Chi Minh and his followers defeating the French in 1954; the split of the country into north and south; the American presence from 1961 to 1975; and, then the aftermath of the North conquering the south in 1975. Also, there is still a great opportunity to be able to talk with many who were there and lived it.

Hue
We had the complete opposite weather. It was SO HOT we couldn't keep hydrated. Don't know which is worse: wet and cold or a scorching sun and humidity?

Airplane photo
Kris, your plane photo cracks me up and reminds me of Asia. Nowhere have I ever seen so many people take their photo in front of the plane as in Asia.

Coffee
I tend to drink my coffee black, but I found Vietnamese coffee to be addicting!

Laos
Your photos are beautiful. After going to Vietnam do you like Laos coffee or Vietnamese coffee better?

Like grandfather, like granddaughter
When Kris' grandpa Sonsin was about the age she is now, he lived and worked in southeast Asia (Singapore and some places in India). This was from around 1927 - 1942. He rode elephants through the jungle too when traveling.

Laughing out loud
These were really great. We're with Albert - we want more!! Was that really you in all the clothes yesterday. Remember what you told us last summer - that after two years in southern China you're used to the warm tropics and not a Minnesota girl anymore.

Different countries
I found Germany to be very interesting because I lived and taught there in 1969-70. Would a large map of the continents help them? Our grandson in 4th grade is studying continents. Just a thought. I found it all to be very interesting. Thank you fot sharing. I love reading your blog.

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas, I sure enjoyed the invitations you posted. I enlarged some so I could read them. Some were quite interesting and creative. You sure got invited to alot of parties. I'm so glad those cookies were still good. Next time let me know and I will add more additives!! As I recall you asked to take some cookies with you, which I supposed would be eaten sooner then later. I will be at work soon and I think it will be rather slow. The quilt store is closed the next 2 days and then I work on Sunday. We have 2 sales for after Christmas so I might just be busy on that Sunday but only from 12 to 4. Yesterday I made a cranberry salad which never set but is great to eat as a fruit soup. Also made candied almonds which I will take to a friend's on Christmas day when we go there for a late dinner. You do look warm in your picture with all your clothes on!! Thank you for your card - we have it in front of the tv an looks very nice with 2 small Santas. Do you have several weeks off now at the end of the term? What are you going to do? Have a special time wherever, Love, Aunt Caroline and Uncle Bill

Chinese universities
First, China isn't a third world country, it's a developing country and considered second world. Some parts of China are advanced, and some are catching up, including changes in norms and values. There is no respect for copyright law. Second, it's a dog eat dog world here and any edge is an edge; students usually aren't taught how to do research papers or what plagerism is. Students everywhere, not just China, will cheat if they think they can get away with it.
22nd November 2010

the truth is
both your college and elyse's are third world colleges in China, so you just can't expect much from them. they just come in to get a degree and find a job, that's it.

We really enjoyed this, but the dream of the young man in Shenzhen to become an astronaut is still our favorite.

Dreams
No matter where we go in the world children's dreams are so big and then as we get older they seem to change along the way. Reality must set in somewhere along the way. Pete & I experienced the same thing with Oral Exams at our school how students would answer questions before we even asked them, say the exact thing as a prior student or not be able to say why or how. Business English students wanting to be Doctors after college. REALLY?

Lost in Translation

If the current semester ends around Christmas time, how long is the break between semesters, including Chinese New Year?
