Weather Report Began overcast with low cloud / drizzle. Continued same much of day - some sunshine in late afternoon - too late. Not the weather I required for my short trip to Oronsay. Bathed in the sea and then stood in the rain to wash away the salt. Two separate sessions on the i-net in the local council service centre (someone else had booked a time slot). Updated blogs, chatted in guy in charge of office and then set off on bike to Oronsay. Arrived at The Strand (causeway like Or with Colonsay) to find that the westerly wind had [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Rain during the night and low cloud / overcast to begin with. Sun gradually broke through and the afternoon was hot and sunny. Bathed in the sea- there are no facilities and then had breakfast to be on the road shortly after 8am. Followed the road north through attractive mountain moorland for about forty minutes before arriving at the track for Kiloran and Balnahard Bays. Probably could have taken the bike but decided to walk - proved to be quite a long hike ! Lovely views first of Kiloran Bay - wide expanse of empty golden sand - before [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Warm and sunny for most of the day. Reasonable nights sleep with alarm waking me about 6.30. Showered, breakfasted and packed by about 8.45. Walked the hundred yards to the pick-up point and waited for the bus. There is only one bus a day so I had to order a special bus so as to make my ferry connection. Bus arrived a few minutes late. No real problems although we were held up by half a dozen cars coming off the Islay ferry so by the time we reached the ferry terminal there were shouts of hurry up from [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Warm and sunny for the most part although occasionally sun obscured by cloud. Strong wind on mountain tops. Arrived at the service point at 10am - when it opened - only to be told that I could not use a portable storage device which is where I keep my blogs. Strange because this had been allowed by the same facility in Islay. No point in arguing so answered an email from Shirley and looked at the BBC website. Asked the lady in the office about camping in Colonsay. She ‘phoned her colleague in Colonsay who indicated that it was [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Overcast to begin with. Brief shower mid-morning otherwise sunny periods. Cool wind. Following yesterday’s efforts decided on a more relaxing day. Late breakfast and then shopped in THE store before setting off about 1020. Brief shower within a few minutes leaving a dark cloud over bike and rider - however all soon cleared. Headed for the ferry terminal at the south end of the island and in view of the overcast conditions decided to do the journey in one go and take photographs on the way back. Road undulates quite severely in places but reached Feolin (ferry T) i [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Overcast at times but some good sunny periods. One heavy shower in the evening. Setoff shortly before 9am with the intention of following the road to its end at Inverlusa in the north of the island and then to follow a track to The Gulf of Corryvreckan celebrated for its rip tides and whirlpools. Within a few minutes I had spotted a seal hauled out on a small rock so that was the first photo opportunity of the day. He disappeared rapidly as I approached although not before I had taken a decent photo. About three miles along the [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Low cloud and mist to start with. Quite cool. Warmed up in the afternoon - very humid. Cloud gradually cleared although hovered over the Paps (mountains on Jura) all day. Slept badly and woke with a start at 6:50. Tut tut ! Packed within two hours and returned bike to shop, posted some unwanted stuff back to mother to lighten my loaded and wrote some postcards while waiting for the bus. Twenty min bus journey to Port Askaig ferry terminal (more of a two person shelter rather than a terminal). Hundred yard walk to ferry - big enough for [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Showers during the night. Early morning overcast and quite cool. Remained so until early afternoon when sun appeared and within a couple of hours it was very hot once again. Apparently the Queen was on Islay today. Flew into Port Ellen to board the yacht that she has hired for the summer. Little like me and my car hire ? I saw none of this - I was not in Port Ellen ! Use the i-net in the Service point for an hour and recharged my laptop and camera batteries. Then collected my hire bike (same one as before) [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Overcast morning with rain from early hours through to about 9am. Thereafter warm with sunny periods. Strong wind developed late afternoon but stayed dry. Washed in the rain - seemed a shame to waste the free water then had a leisurely breakfast before returning bike to the shop. Found what is described as the Islay Service Point - mostly local heath and housing services but with free i-net access. So updated my blogs. Did some food shopping and then took my washing to the laundrette which is part of the swimming pool complex. While the washing was on the [View Full Entry]

As predicted awoke to the sound of falling rain. Washed in the rain on the clifftop, had breakfast and then returned the hire bike. Found my way to the local council offices which have free internet use so here I am !!! After I have updated these blogs I will make use of the laundry and shower facilities at the local swimming pool and then buy a newspaper and have a leisurely day. [View Full Entry]
