Weather Report Started cool, overcast and with a hint of drizzle. Brightened up in the afternoon. Decamped just before 9am and drove to Downham Market for a little retail therapy as conditions were not suitable for photography. Journey to Sawtry (just off the A1(M) south of Peterborough was uneventful and took little more than an hour. Found my new base and quickly established camp. The camp site although an authorised site is without facilities - so v cheap. I have an entire field to myself a couple of hundred yards from farmhouse and have already been inspected so feel that [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Sunday - warm and sunny for the whole day. Sunday I explored the area around Ramsey which is in what used to be the County of Huntingdonshire but courtesy of previously mentioned govt reorg has been moved into Cambridgeshire !!! Do you not just love politicians ? Anyway be that as it may Ramsey is an attractive small town based around an old abbey. Unfortunately the ruins are in the grounds of a school and only open on occasional days - which today was not. Attempted to visit the parish church but it was locked - SUNDAY SUNDAY [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Warm and sunny - all day ! Exploring the area between Peterborough and Wisbech / March - an area that I would call Huntingdonshire but since the (a ?) govt reorg it is now part of Cambridgeshire. Nothing new to report about the Fens ….. still flat and intensively farmed. Had a glimpse of a short-eared owl but sadly too far away for a decent phot. However did at least achieve a good shot of a heron in flight - one more for the collection. Highlight was probably Thorney - a delightful village mostly built in the eighteenth [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Warm and sunny - all day ! Exploring the extreme north of the county between March and the border with the Lincolnshire. March, a market town in the heart of the Fens, has an attractive waterside with narrow boats working their way along the River Nene. With some imagination you could no doubt find your way along the river to the open sea. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Parish Church of St Wendreda again in March. This has much of architectural interest but above all it has perhaps the finest hammer beam roof in the [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Finally some improvement !!!! For the record according to the Met Office from late Friday of last week rain fell in this area for 55 hours without break. In that time 80mm fell which is double the average total for May. Wet !!!!!!! Also it was rather cold. Thursday dawned bright and although shower clouds developed it remained bright for most of the day - except when I needed good light for photography. Forecast for Fri / Sat good, Sunday in doubt. Early part of next week looks promising so may at last make some progress. Today (Thursday) [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Forecast for next 10-14 days is unsettled - that is to say more of the same. Oh dear! Thursday was a good day…. long sunny spells. Exhaustive exploration of the Fenland to the south west of Ely where villages such as Sutton and Witchford were literally islands of higher land within an area of marshes, meres and streams until the land was drained in the seventeenth century. Friday started well with wide sunny skies full of promise. Rushed down to Earith with a full day planned exploring the area to the west of the Bedford levels. Google it [View Full Entry]

Cheating a little here - two blogs in one ! Time getting in the way as usual ….. Weather Report Warm and sunny both days (Tuesday and Wednesday). Both days clouded over in the late afternoon. Exploring the fenland area to the south of Ely. The fens are in some respects an acquired taste best seen from the air or the water. Almost devoid of relief they are so low that in most locations it is very difficult to achieve any perspective. The best vantage points are the small islands of higher land which has given rise to names such [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Bright start ! Surprisingly weather remained generally bright until late afternoon. Probably should have set-off sooner but the poor weather of past few days has slowed down my reaction time ! Not expecting fine day… Left camp site at about 8.30am. Made for Gog Magog hills only a couple of miles down the road with the intention of parking and walking up the hill to enjoy the view and take some phots. Arrived to find that the height limit into the CP was less than seven feet - my car with bike is over seven feet ! Cambridge [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Started gloomy. Intermittent rain through the morning. Deluge through the afternoon - sunny by early evening … not a lot of use. Cold. Forecast for next week … bad or unsettled bad - not good for photographers ! Sat in car and wrote up notes and sorted photos. [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Started quite bright then gloomy with occasional showers. Sunny from mid-afternoon. First part of the day achieved that which I had planned then things went a little awry. Visited the only two settlements in the area to which I had not given my favour including the delightful church at Thriplow. Moved on to the RSPB reserve and once the rain stopped set-off on the circular nature trail which included a number of bird hides. Failed to see the Marsh Harrier that the warden told me about but had an enjoyable and relaxing wander around a this wild area. [View Full Entry]
