Weather Warm and sunny. Strong cooling breeze which brought a chill in the early evening. Departed SOS just before 9am. Well I left Fairways at that time but it was a good half hour before I had reached the outskirts of the town - someone really should build a new road ! Reached the Essex / Cambs border about 11 and gained entry without visa / passport requirements. I guess they will not be seeking independence following this week’s elections. As planned I explored this remote part of Cambs for a couple of hours. Very attractive countryside - generally undulating [View Full Entry]

New Tent Europe » United Kingdom » England » Essex » Southend-on-Sea
Hi there !!! Really just wanted to see if I could remember how to use this blog and the image resizer. So having invested in a new tent - thought you would like to view. Also pic of one of the Fairways residents. Expect to recommence travels towards end April - finances / weather dependent as ever. Steve [View Full Entry]

Summary Europe » United Kingdom » England » Essex
I guess you all think you should have a summary. Short and sweet … here it is. Saw some really interesting, delightful remote places and some fascinating wildlife. Met some interesting people and had no bad experiences with same - that in itself is good. In terms of the ‘project’ - far less successful. Really covered far less of the British isles than intended. That was partly because of the problem with the car and simply because the travelling / photography required more time than expected. At least I will know better next time. Next time will hopefully be next [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Rain during the night. Overcast when I woke shortly after 6.30. As soon as I looked through the insect flap of the tent I realised there was a plague of midges which with the wet tent was not going to make for a pleasant decamp. Showered and then put on several layers of clothing include complete head to toe waterproofs in vain hope of fighting off midges. Packed and decamped very quickly but was nevertheless bitten badly - not a happy camper. Instead of a relaxing breakfast I marched off to the coach stop where there were marginally fewer [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Predictably sunny to begin with although cloud had reached Craignure by mid-morning. Warm and sunny as travelled from Oban. Efficient decamp - must be getting good at this. Walked down to MacGregors and waited for the 11am ferry. The journey will take two days because although the first bust and indeed first train from Oban reach Glasgow in time there is not a ferry from Mull that arrives in Oban in time for either. Integrated transport system, eh ? Pleasant 45 minute ferry journey to Oban. Simple collection of coach ticket from TIC by which time I was feeling [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Windy showers - much the same as yesterday. Another ‘wasted’ day. Yet again used the i-net facility (15 minutes / £1 !!!!) in MacGregors Roadside Bar. Forecast still very poor so changed flight to Friday at some cost but obviously saved on several days accommodation / food. [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Windy showers - and that was the best of it. Incredibly strong gusts at times with some tents suffering damage. Not mine - so far ! Could make little sense of various weather forecasts but decided that the uncertainty of that plus sitting in the tent spending money suggest a need to bring the expedition to an end. Have booked flight Glasgow to Stansted for Tuesday afternoon. In the late morning I walked through the nearby forest to Torsay castle and then returned along the foreshore. Would have been some good photo opportunities if the sun had been shining. [View Full Entry]

Weather Report Windy showers - and that was the best of it. Achieved very little today - see above. Several visits to local store for what was basically comfort food. Read the newspaper from cover to cover. Evening sat in a communal area chatting with some of our EU friends - convivial. [View Full Entry]

Weather Report First half of the day mix of cloud and sunny periods. Generally adequate for the purpose ! From mid-afternoon incredibly heavy showers increasing in frequency. That seems to be the forecast for the coming week - not good. Set off with bike hired from campsite at about 8.15am. Drove sedately north along the road that follows the east coast of Mull. Nothing of exceptional interest to see. The landscape on the landward side of the road is largely bracken moorland leading up to high hills while the shoreline is a mix of lock rocky promontories separating rocky bays. Weather Report Generally overcast with sunny breaks in the cloud to begin with. Showers increasing in frequency and intensity in the afternoon. Mid-afternoon rained violently for best part of two hours. Brighter evening. Crossing to Mull was less than an hour and uneventful. Twenty minute walk to campsite and shortly after 9am my tent was erected. Spent morning looking around campsite, shopping in village store and doing my washing. After midday snack walked a little way along the shore but was so tired quickly retreated to tent where I slept soundly for a couple of hours despite a to [View Full Entry]
