Seem to have recovered my energy levels following a good nights sleep/ Another (????) fine sunny day - and very warm. Make the most of it because the forecast for northern England is not so good for Sunday. Next week is expected to be mostly dry with good sunny periods - hooray ! Fairly relaxing day driving north through the Vale of York that lies between the Pennines to the west and the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds to the east. This is mostly flat or gently undulating farmland with pretty villages and small market towns with much use made [View Full Entry]

Probably my worst day on the road so far - ran out of steam. Possibly because of the change in temperature and possibly because I was coming to the end of this bit of Yorkshire and was not completely focussed on the job in hand. Tut ! tut ! Anyway started off OK. Decamped for once in fine sunny weather and left the coast behind for the next week or so. Headed south across the moors for one last time and found myself in Goathland which apparently is the setting for the TV series Heartbeat - must watch it sometime !! [View Full Entry]

Well the great day finally arrived - another year older if not wiser. At least I now know what day of the week it is. Two ‘phone calls before 8AM to wish me all the best - thank you !!!! Weather not so cheerful - one of those days that only the east coast can deliver - cold east wind, leaden sky and thick drizzle. Eventually cleared and the day was reasonably warm if not sunny. Briefly visited Kirleatham Hall the early nineteenth century home of an industrial magnate and then found the James Cook Birthplace Museum set in very attractive [View Full Entry]

Laboured for much of the morning under the impression that it was June 1 and therefore my birthday. Sadly May proved to be one of those odd months with 31 days so the celebrations will have to be out on ice - along with the promised improvement in the weather. Much of the day sunny but in the bitterly cold east wind gloves would have been most welcome. Visited Staithes between 8 and 9 (- free parking !!!). Interesting little village that clings to the sides of a deep ravine plummeting down to a small bay. Very attractive and historically important [View Full Entry]

Peter Crouch has just scored --- whoopee !!!!! No thanks to the manager’s tactics …. Sitting looking out over the sea reflecting on an enjoyable if tiring day. Started early as ever (perhaps we should take that for granted …..). Howling gale - took excellent photos of waves battering the cliffs as the rain lashed down. Pottered off to Staithes with little enthusiasm. Still raining so pencilled that in for tomorrow (my birthday - I think !) Made my way to Great Ayton on the northern edge of the NY Moors - birthplace of JC. Typically pleasant if busy market town. [View Full Entry]

Usual early start which began with the discovery of Sandsend just to the north of Whitby. Little there other than really attractive views in both directions along the coast. Moved five miles north to Runswick Bay which I explored for a couple of hours. Again little there other than a very steep walk down to the bay. Worth the effort because of the delightful setting with stone houses with red tiled roofs hugging the steep cliffs above the water. Decided to head inland and spent the rest of the day go up and down the winding roads that lead you up [View Full Entry]

Arose early - far too early ….. for some reason decided I would watch the sunrise. That completed I drove the short distance up the coast to Raven scar (not much there - other than views) and then continued on to Robin Hood’s Bay. Parked (free because it was only 730AM) and walked down through the village. Cars are no longer allowed in the village - very sensible. For those who do not know the village it has one main street that winds down and incredibly steep hill ending at the waters edge. Really very little to see - but enchanting [View Full Entry]

Up soon after 6AM - something of a lie-in. Decamped shortly after eight - not bad going and even managed to get the entire contents of the tent in its tiny bag. That does not always happen. Headed towards the coast under gloomy skies. Worked my way across the Wolds and arrived in Scarborough shortly after midday and parked in a Park & Ride facility about a mile from the town centre. A free car park !!!! - and only 40p for the ride into town. I walked - of course. There is not a great deal of interest in Scarborough [View Full Entry]

…. the remaining part of Friday …… Well the rain never did clear as predicted by the forecast. Damp grey drizzle settled over the coast. Drove up to the Country Park car park overlooking the Brigg (previously mentioned continuation of the headland north of Filey.) Paid for parking (unusual for me) and parked in conventional space (even more unusual). Front wheels promptly disappeared several inches into the mud !!!!!!!!! Not happy. No chance of moving so with a good view of the sea I rang the RAC and settled down to lunch. RAC arrived about an hour later and took less [View Full Entry]

Wet start to the day. So weeks washing done while waiting for rain to cease. Now in Filey sorting out these blogs in their library. Hopefully some sun this afternoon. Apologies if one photo is repeated somewhere in the Linconshire section - bit of a muddle there !!!!!!!!!! More later. [View Full Entry]
