Like everyone else, our life is paused during the COVID-19 pandemic - travel restrictions and common sense means we need to stay put for a while. At this stage we are staying at the Gateway Village in Grafton... until further notice. Please stay home as much as possible and be physically anti social - stay safe and healthy. Feel free to call, email or message us any time (I'm not totally anti-social).... read more

While still waiting for our house to be rented out, we decided to continue to travel but stay fairly close to Grafton. Since the last trip was out West it's time for the beach. The first week was spent at Lorikeet Park on Corindi/Arrawarra Beach - very relaxing. The beach was a only short walk from our site, but the beach access was through a wetland with millions of mozzies... We had a trip to Woolgoolga to add a bird to my family tree tattoo, and another to do a top-up shop. Although the shop had limited stock, we were able to get most of our normal items. We had quite a bit of rain over the week but still managed a few long walks on the beach :-) The second week was a week at ... read more

In the past, when planning a route I looked for winding bitumen roads (bikes) or dirt roads and national parks (4x4). With a rather large caravan to tow I now find myself planning routes with easy roads (not too windy or steep) and have set the GPS to avoid unsealed roads. This may sound a bit boring, but it doesn't have to be. The main purpose of this trip is to visit family and friends in the Dubbo/Mudgee area. From Grafton we headed up the Gwydir - can't avoid all steep windy roads - and followed it all the way to Moree, then turned south towards Dubbo to our first overnight stop at Gurley Recreation Area. This is a community run campground where you can stay overnight for a $10 donation. We were the only ones ... read more

The plan for this week was to get away somewhere but be close enough for my girls night in Brisbane (to see Queen) on Thursday, and to attend the Caravan & Camping show at Redcliffe on the weekend. We left Grafton early on Monday morning (10/02) and headed north to our first stop - Ballina RV Centre. The ESC (electronic stability control) had stopped working last trip and was still showing a red indicator (not working properly). After a couple of hours of trial and error it was finally working and we were good to go. Then there was a traffic accident between Yelgun and Chinderah which caused a detour off the motorway up the Tweed Valley Way, and then another accident on the Gold Coast which caused bumper to bumper traffic on the motorway for ... read more

Going NFA is more than just buying a caravan and taking off. There are a lot of things to consider and lots to do to get ready before leaving. Our plan is to travel for 5 to 10 years so lots of decisions had to be made about our home and belongings. The caravan took a while to find - we didn't have a large budget so we opted for a used caravan. I made a list (as I do) of our needs and wants and we did a lot of research and visited a lot of caravan sales yards. It took two months to find what we wanted, but in the end we got a great caravan at price we were willing to pay - and didn't have to compromise on our 'must haves'. We ... read more

NFA – sounds kinda dirty, but No Fixed Address (NFA) has always been our retirement plan, like many other Aussies. We just decided not to wait till retirement… We’ve done a lot of travelling over the years in many different ways; by car, by bus, by motorcycle, by 4wd and by plane, camping in hotels and hostels, in swags and tents, and in camper trailers (soft floor and hard floor). We’ve had lots of adventures and seen a lot more of Australia than most Australians…. but we want more. I am a Change Manager, a contractor in the IT industry. My work often took me away from my family and home, but now our kids are grown and have kids of their own, so we have no ties to any specific location. This provides an excellent ... read more

Lightning Ridge - Moree It took about seven and a half hours to drive from Grafton to Lightning Ridge. We travelled along the Gwydir to Collarenebri then headed along dirt road to Lightning Ridge. Arriving in town we chose the Opal Caravan park - it is just out of town and looked the nicest (more open spaces), even though all of the sites are on gravel. After setting up I did some research on tours and things to do in the Ridge. I don't do underground (claustrophobia) so I booked in for the Black Opal town tour the next day. Their town tour has an optional extra (after the down tour) to do the underground mine. It was very hot so once we were setup and the tour bookings were done we headed to the pool ... read more

Grafton Well, our week at home ended up being three weeks at home, but we did get a lot done during that time and it was nice being home (in a house) for a while - and we arrived home just in time for the Jacaranda Festival. The suspension springs had to be sent (by the manufacturer) from Melbourne, then we waited for the shock absorbers from Brisbane. But eventually the camper was ready to go again - and so were we. Apart from fixing the suspension (and other smaller things) on the camper we spent time with family and caught up with friends, did some maintenance on the gardens and some spring cleaning in the house (including moving the lounge furniture around), sorted out the Christmas shopping, serviced the car, cleaned the camper, and updated ... read more

Hill End - Lake Keepit - Sawn Rocks - Moree - Dalmorton - Home From Hill End we had planned to go to Barrington Tops National Park. Stopping along the way for brunch we were warned by a road worker that a major storm is expected in the area that night. We arrived at Scone and went to the Visitors Information Centre for information about the national park. They also warned of the storm and also advised that it is often worse at the top of the mountain, so after doing some BOM research we decided to head north west instead of East -hoping to avoid the worse of the storm. We had been to Lake Keepit many years ago and thought we'd check it out again - the state park is now managed by Inland ... read more

Lake Cargelligo - Hill End So apparently there isn't a lot to do around Lake Cargelligo, but we had a nice relaxing day. A visit to the Tourist Information centre wasn't very informative. I find it hard to understand why people would volunteer for a job that they are so obviously not suited to - this lady should have a job that doesn't involve talking to people. The pamphlets about the lake suggest that Lake Cargelligo is big on water sports, fishing and bird watching. There is a Sail & Power Boat club on the edge of the lake, and apparently there was a big fishing competition here a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure how much water sport actually happens here though - walking along the lake we saw a couple of warning signs, ... read more
