Cadoux - Elachbutting Rock - Kalgoorlie They call this area the wheat belt, and we drove past hundreds of kilometres of crop (wheat/canola), but there are also a lot of large rocks around this area - enough that you could spend a week driving around to see them all... We stopped at just a few of them. Some of them, like Datjoin Rock, were a bit underwhelming - it's claim to fame was a well believed to have been dug by sandalwood cutters in the early 1900's and that it was the campsite of a criminal hiding out with his wife and twelve (yes 12) kids in the late 1960's. One, Bonnie Rock, turned out to be a town not a rock. But some were pretty impressive. Beringbooding Rock has the largest rock water catchment in ... read more

Carnarvon - Kalbarri - Moora - Cadaux It was good to get back on the road again, and to be back in the camper. We left Carnarvon and headed south to Kalbarri for a couple days. Poor Kev, this meant more walking for him :) I had been unsure if we would find accommodation here as it is usually very busy. Fortunately we didn't have any problem - we checked into the Top Tourist Caravan Park in town. When we packed the camper up last (after our 'breakdown night on the side of the road) it was still damp. And as it had been packed away for a few days it started growing mould on the canvas roof of the tent(inside) . So my first job was to sweep the ceilings and give it a good ... read more

Carnarvon Something you don't want to hear your repairer saying is "we can't source the parts we need, anywhere". This prompted us to call the manufacturer in Melbourne and explain the situation. So far, with all the issues we have had with the camper trailer, we haven't asked for warranty or help from them. But this time we had no choice - the camper (and many of the parts) are imported and not available in Australia. We argued with them to have the parts air freighted, otherwise we would have been waiting up to two weeks, with no home. They eventually agreed and arranged for the necessary parts to be sent. With the parts organised to be delivered and nothing else to do we decided to take the opportunity to explore Carnarvon. A trip to the ... read more

Mt Augustus - Carnarvon We packed up and headed out of Mt Augustus just before 7am - heading towards Meekathara with Cue being our next planned overnight stop. The road was dry and there were only a few damp patches that were no problem. Just past the Landor turnoff (about 100km from Mt Augustus) we heard a noise and stopped to check it out. The wheel bearing on the left side of the camper had collapsed (gone). This is something that cannot be fixed on the side of the road (unless we had a spare bearing - which we don't). We were in the middle of nowhere! It is an extremely remote road. The only thing we could do was call for help. When we were preparing for the trip, because we were planning on travelling ... read more

Coral Bay - Kennedy Range National Park Leaving Coral Bay we headed to Carnarvon for a breakfast stop. I had read of an ice-cream shop that made their own ice-cream - so we thought we'd check it out. It was a bit of a disappointment though, the ice-cream was pretty ordinary (I had expected scoop ice-cream but they only had pre made ice-cream on a stick, and although t had plenty of fruit flavour it was very watery). From Carnarvon we headed East towards Gascoyne Junction and topped up with fuel before continuing to Kennedy Range National Park. Arriving at the campground we drove around a bit looking for a good spot - most of the sites weren't designed for camper trailers and they weren't very flat. We finally settled on a site and setup then ... read more

Barradale - (Exmouth) - Coral Bay We arrived in Exmouth and had breakfast in the town then headed to the National Park. We had planned a couple of days at Exmouth, but there were no campsites available at Cape Range National Park. The options were to continue on to Coral Bay or stay in a Caravan Park at Exmouth. The caravan parks weren't near a beach so we decided to continue on. When we arrived at Coral Bay the first caravan park was full - the second (only other park) had space though so we booked in for three nights. We have been to Coral Bay before, about seven years ago, and loved it. The beach is part of the Ningaloo reef and is a marine sanctuary (so no fishing). The water is crystal clear and ... read more

Cape Keraudren - (Port Hedland) - Karijini National Park We left Cape Keraudren and headed to Port Hedland to collect the bolts and then continue on to Karijini National Park. We arrived at the bolt shop just before 8:30am but the bolts hadn't been delivered yet, so we went and had breakfast while we waited for their courier delivery. We finally left Port Hedland just after 10am, but we had four new bolts and still plenty of time to get to Karijini. The scenery in this area is awesome - I love the colours out here... Arriving at Karijini we went directly to Dales Gorge Campground. The campground hosts were not very friendly and seemed to take it as a personal insult when we asked for a site away from the generator area (obviously they have ... read more

Broome - Cape Keraudren Two nights in Broome was enough - enough to get the parts (bits) we needed to fix the camper, enough to fit the new parts, enough to do a bit of laundry and top up supplies and enough of a city for me to want to leave asap. It is very busy here as it's still their 'peak' season - the first two caravan parks we went to were full - and the one we were in was pretty crowded too. When we arrived we set up camp then went out looking for the parts we needed to fix things - bolts for the suspension, a shock absorber, and some higher grade lead to rewire the fridge power, and we arranged to have the battery tested the next morning. We then went ... read more

Wolfe Creek Crater National Park - Fitzroy Crossing - Geikie Gorge National Park - Tunnel Creek - Windjana Gorge - Derby From Wolfe Creek Crater we backtracked to Halls Creek to top up with fuel before continuing on to Fitzroy Crossing. Along the Tanami Road there are wrecks of a few cars that didn't make it and Kevin thought he may be able to scrounge a bolt for the camper - he got two. Fitzroy Crossing is a strange place, but it is also the best place to be based for a visit to Geikie Gorge. We have stayed here before so were aware of the local issues, but were warned when we checked into the caravan park to lock up our valuables - and especially any alcohol. We stayed for two nights to allow us ... read more

Kununurra - Bungle Bungle (Purnululu) National Park - Wolfe Creek Crater National Park We had been told that the road into the Bungle Bungles was worse than the Gibb River Road, so we left early to allow plenty of time to get there. Just as well too! The road from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungle turn-off was all bitumen and it's only 60km into the Kurrajong campground. We discovered very quickly that reports were correct - it took us two and a half hours to do 60km - it was bloody rough. The corrugations were worse than we have had the whole trip, and there was no relief, they just kept going and going. Everything was shaken up. There were some rough pot-holes, rocky patches and a few creek crossings, but the worse was the corrugates. ... read more
