Greetings! I know it has been awhile since my last post, but life has been hectic in the Southern Hemisphere! I finished up midterms last week, and it took a lot out of me to study for them, but I'm hoping everything went ok. For a little post-exam stress a couple of us took a little trip to the beautiful mountain town of Huaraz. I wasn't going to go at first, because I knew I had tons of reading to do for the week after my finals, but one of the girls talked me into it and I couldn't be happier with my decision to go! It has been my favorite trip out of Lima so far! We arrived to Huaraz early Friday morning and against all recommendations to use the first day to adjust to ... read more

For my anthropology class, we were assigned to do a group project about something that a different culture does (some sort of ritual, ceremony, custom etc.). Keep in mind I said a group project, and I am the only foreigner in my class... you ask how I found a group since no body wants to work with foreigners? By default, one group only had two people in it so I got put in their group. So our project was about "Virgen de la Merced", the patron of Churín. Churín is a town about 5 hours out of Lima by bus, and they celebrate la Virgen de la Merced Sept. 22 through the 27 with some parties and food and a running of bulls through the streets(which unfortunately we missed because we had to come back Sunday). ... read more

Whew what a week I had! First, I'll start off with last weekend. On Friday a couple of us went to Mistura-which is a big food festival where vendors from all over come sell their delicious Peruvian food! It was awesome! I tried tons of interesting dishes including anticuchos (cow heart AHHH!) It wasn't that bad actually, I could only have a bite though because the thought of what I was eating just made me a little nauseous. But it's quite popular here and my Señora actually told me I needed to try brain because she loves it! I don't know if that's on my bucket list while I'm here though. But Mistura was awesome and I had plans to go to I went with Renzo and his crew to an awesome place on the beach ... read more

I can't believe I have been here for a month!! Time is flying especially now that classes are in full swing. It's crazy to think that most schools in the United States are just beginning. Classes here are pretty difficult for me, I am getting a lot better at understanding what my teachers are saying but it still takes a lot of effort to then put their words into concepts I can understand and get something out of. My literature class is giving me a run for my money, it's tons of reading and it takes me a lot longer to read because I need to look up words to make sure I know what I'm reading. I know going through all of this will pay off in the long run, though. And some of the ... read more

It's been awhile, but I've had a busy couple of weeks in Peru! First of all, signing up for classes was a pretty big hassle. The enrollment day was Monday the 22nd, the 2nd week of classes and signups started at 9 with a first come, first serve policy so we had to get there early. Oh yeah, and it was only international students signing up so most of the classes were already full with only a couple of extra spots. I got to school an hour before signups and was feeling pretty good about it, but I got my number and saw I was the 130th person to arrive that morning!! WHAT? So I was a little nervous about getting the classes I wanted. It took forever, but finally at NOON I was able to ... read more

Hey friends! There is so much I want to write, and you all know how bad I am at telling stories so I'll try to keep it short and sweet, but we know how well that will go. I just want to write about some Peruvian ways of life before I dig into the juicy stuff: 1) whenever you greet someone you have to go in for the kiss on the cheek even if you don't know them, it's a little awkward at first but I'm getting used to it. 2) you can't drink the water from the faucet or you'll get sick, it has to be boiled first. 3) you can't flush the toilet paper so their are garbages (covered!!) where you can throw it. I'm starting to become more accustomed to getting around in ... read more

HELLO FRIENDS I'M ALIVE!!(I hope nobody is sad about this) Lima is a crazy city! I got here on Tuesday night at 2 a.m., so technically Wednesday. I had orientation Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. so I had to wake up at 7a.m. to get ready and get the bus at 7:45a.m. to make sure I got there on time. I live in Miraflores, which is a district in Peru that is supposed to be one of the safest districts in Peru with lots of entertainment like restaurants, bars, and shopping, but the downside is it's far from the university (up to an hour long bus ride if there is lots of traffic). I live with a Sra. who is older and acts just like a mom, telling me, and another person staying with us (his ... read more
