This morning I wanted to do the rest of the War Memorial. I figured I could see everything else plus fit in some time at the Science Museum before hitting up the Royal National Hotel for the Contiki Orientation Meeting. I chose my favourite breakfast place as the McDonalds on Oxford St, near Oxford Square tube. It is across the road form the internet café I visited on my first day here, so that if I needed to kill time before anything opened, I could cheaply kill time there. My main gripe with museums is that they open around 10am. What is an early riser like myself supposed to do, seeing that I am up at 4am every morning? At least I got to chat to another old school friend living in London - I’ll have ... read more

I’m sorry that I didn’t mention it in at all in yesterday’s entry but yesterday was the 4th anniversary of the London bombings. Here I was, riding the Tube without realising - crap, this is something that happened 4 years ago. The many modes of transport that I was freely exploring London on were terrorised in a cruel act that took the lives of 56 people, including the 4 perpetrators. Today, London is somewhat changed. I don’t think it will ever be the same after 7/7, although they’ve moved on - nothing against NYC but you have to build, rebuild and then move on. I thought about going on a day break to either Bath or Brighton but backed out when I saw what the prices were. I had 2 hours to kill before the Science ... read more

DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS

I tried making conversation with that young Asian lass but that didn’t seem to work. No idea why, but then again I remember what my older sister said to me just as I left her in Sydney… “DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS” …which is fair enough. I mean, who would want to talk to a guy who wants to run amok all through Europe and the UK, with the sole intention to try 80 different beers? Sounds creepy to me. I thought about stopping and having a beer in Hong Kong but common sense got the better of me. After all, I’d have to wait a whole 24 hours before the next Virgin Atlantic flight to London if I would do something foolish and miss this plane. So I killed time with a computer that didn’t have ... read more

Man, I was so tired from the weekend - seeing that I didn’t sleep for much of it - and I will admit that there’s no bed like my own. But my sister Antonia came over right on 9am as she was taking me to the airport to make sure I got the plane on time. Worse things have happened before! My sister works for AQIS but told me that my shoes would have been fine to take to the UK - apparently their quarantine isn’t as strict as ours. Here are my shoes with grass clippings and dog shit as well. I also bumped into my cousin Ricardo, working the security in the customs desk. How appropriate that the last person I get to see is family - there is no escaping the Timorese. I’m ... read more

Graeme and I weren’t as seedy and sore today as we were yesterday. Maybe our bodies had become accustomed to this general feeling of seediness. Still, we were both craving a decent feed - Graeme did with hustling his flat mate for some Subway while I had something to eat at the airport. I didn’t mind if today’s plane was delayed because Geelong and St Kilda are going to play a game of AFL kicking off at 3pm. My plane left at 2pm and it wouldn’t be much worth trying to watch it on the plane, especially when we were due to land at 3.30pm. But guess what? The plane was delayed, woo hoo! Just like how the first plane to Perth was delayed, I was happy as it would mean I could be able to ... read more

I really could have done with some southern fried chicken seeing that today was American Independence Day, but Graeme and I settled for Indooroopilly’s Coffee Club for a greasy breakfast. 2 days in a row I am hungover and eating dirty food, I guess I have to get used to this. “Red Dog” made sure I got on the right train and it was good that he lived near the Ipswich line. I caught a train on this line many times before, but no train trip beats the one Robbie and I had that with the awesome train guard from Caboolture to Booval, way back in 2003. I Sherwood have wanted to see the Ippy Girls again but they have come down with the flu, so bowling didn’t take place last night. I’ll have to make ... read more

Knock Knock… Knock Knock… No answer. Knock Knock…”Room Service” I could hear the key go into the lock and I sat up in my bed looking blank. The maid also looked at me weird and then said “Ok, I’ll just come back when you check out”. At least I wasn’t butt naked. But yes, I had overslept and room service was here. Damnit! I hate this. At least I didn’t take anything out of my bag so I was packed and ready to go at 11am. Whoops! Sarah was kind enough to let me kill time at her place that afternoon. The kids were here too (I soon discovered it was school holidays) and I got to watch a few more cartoons. At least it was better than watching Air Crash Investigation. Or watching the news ... read more

I must have had about 80 beers when I booked these plane tickets for this morning’s flights as a) it was departing at 8am and b) it was to Brisbane, when I was actually going to Surfers Paradise tonight. Thankfully this was my only knobbish behaviour to be exhibited on this leg. Any negative vibes about getting up so early, being on the train before sunrise, the cold crisp Sydney morning air were forgotten upon landing in Brisbane, even if it was foggy (smog is probably a more accurate description). It seemed to clear up the further I got out of Brisbane and there were only clear skies when I got into the Gold Coast. I hadn’t had much in the way of breakfast so to say I was starving was an understatement. Club sandwiches are ... read more

The scene was set for an almighty farewell party @ The Albion Hotel. There was more than one reason to party. Adam Ashton was also leaving for the UK, Cass and Renee were off to Hawai’i, Dave Alce’s birthday and of course, I was trying to down 80 beers in one sitting! We got down to the pub at 5pm because we knew that it was going to be a busy night. Dave was on the scene first and so was Amy. She had a housewarming that night but at least came down to say hello. Before too long the people were coming through thick and fast. Robbie showed up for an early visit as well, while Sandy was away at a hens night. At least by coming early we were able to have a bit ... read more

All that is left in my room was everything that Brooke and Callan didn’t take last night - a box of donuts and a 2L bottle of coke, plus some peanuts. I planned to only have the donut on hand this morning, but last night I dozed off without putting much of a dent in my booze stock. I guess that’s something I’ll take into consideration for the rest of my trip. I’m not going to pack too much because I’ll always end up with more than I came with. At lese there weren’t any nasty hangovers to report! ... read more
