Sorry for the delay in any blogs, the interweb down here is poor at best. We are now in Argentina though which is wonderful and has high speed internet... Back to 11 days ago. I (Iain) decided that I had had enough of Inca ruins and museums and wanted some adventure. Whilst in La Paz (Bolivia) booked in to mountain bike down the most dangerous road in the world (MDRW). For those of you who don´t know what this, google it! Basically its about 40km of dirt track that goes from about 3500m elevation to 1100m between two places in bolivia. There are virtually no safety barriers on it and 600+m drops off the side. Our group of 14 set off on the modern road at 4700m to get used to the bikes for the first ... read more

Hello All. Once again apologies for the infrequency of the blog updates - I have to admit it is mainly through laziness and frustration with slow internet connections. We´ll we´ve travelled a fair way since we lef the Colca Canyon and are now in a rather lovely part of North West Argentina staying with some wonderful hosts Alex and Rijkje (spelling may not be quite right) of Casa Hernandez. We´ve arrived here via Bolivia and Chile but I´d better start back in the distant past in Cusco, Peru. We weren´t that impressed wiith Cusco initially, the bus dropped us in a yard at 6am , nothing close to resembling a bus station, where they kept the big metal gates firmly closed to keep the hoards of taxi drivers at bay from the bleary eyed travellers. The ... read more

Any worries we had about bus travel soon dissapated as we made the 15hr journey to Arequipa in comfort and style aboard a very luxurious new bus. As the railway service is non existant for public travel in Peru and air travel is pretty pricey the buses are the main long distance transport and therefore much better than you would imagine. For about $50 USD each we got cushioned leather seats that reclined 160 degrees, 2 meals, films and bingo. Fantastic. We arrived in Arequipa in the morning and the hotel pickup was waiting for us just outside, it can get a bit hectic with taxi drivers competing for business and it was great not to have to deal with it. The hotel was very nice and modern, on the outskirts of town it was quiet ... read more

Hello everyone hope you are all well! We have covered a lot of miles in the last 10 days, Whistler - Vancouver- London- Leicester via Ashdon (it´s in Essex for those of you who don´t know) - Birmingham - Newark - Lima. So as you can imagine there hasn´t been much time to update anything really. We said our goodbyes to the snow and wonderful scenery and people of BC and have been enjoying the heat and bustle of Lima for the past couple of days. We´re staying in Barranco, a seaside suburb outside of the city centre, and what a good idea that was after experiencing "downtown" yesterday. I guess it´s pretty much the same as every major city centre, busy, noisy and polluted but we weren´t expecting it to be so hot and pretty ... read more

We spent the weekend before last down in Vancouver which no doubt Helen will continue with her quality blogs on in the next few days. It rained quite a lot down in the city which is not an uncommon event, this meant it was snowing heavily in Whistler which I was missing out on! In order to get my fill of late season powder and also partly as I was starting to feel a bit unfit I fancied a long hike out in the backcountry to get some deep and steep turns in I got in touch with a few other people I know out here who were also having similar thoughts and so on Tuesday 14th it was on.... Despite a couple of people dropping out - one had to work and the other missed ... read more

Sorry for yet another delayed Blog entry! Last weekend (4th April) I (Iain) went off with 3 other guys I've met out here for a day at Powder Mountain Cat Skiing. Basically this involved a group of 12 of us heading off into the amazing back country down the road from Whistler and getting ferried about the mountains in a snow cat whilst snowboarding fresh untracked powder. This is was a real treat for all of us, riding deep powder is the reason why we are all here, its a sensation that is very hard to describe but is probably as close to flying / floating that you can get. Needless to say we all had an amazing time - 8 runs and about 16,000 vertical feet of riding and thankfully no hiking due to the ... read more

Hmm sorry everyone, it seems that the last blog post was some 30 days ago which makes us alot lazier than we thought. Actually this entry was started on the 15th March but we shelved it for reasons we can't remember. Anyway better late than never... As life in Whistler settled into a routine we decided to take a break and head out to Vancouver Island for a week. We caught the ferry from Horseshoe bay to Departure bay in Nanaimo, the crossing took about 1hr 30min, luckily the weather was perfect, sunny and clear so no sea sickness. As we sat on the ocean side we missed the view of the BC coastal mountains but there was a great image of a distant mountain, I guess in Washington State, which appeared to be floating in ... read more

Over the last weekend I (iain) and one of the lads I've met out here (Lez) did a 2.5 day Avalanche Awareness Course and am now qualified by the Canadian Avalanche Centre - Avalanche Skills Training Level 1. The course started on Friday night with 3 hours in the classroom (quite a while since I'd done anything like that) learning all about what causes avalanches and what to look for to avoid getting caught in one, what to do if you get caught in one and finally how to rescue people who manage to get caught in one. Saturday we went out on the hill and did some transceiver searches - these are the beacons you wear incase you get buried - they are pretty simple to use and our snow shovelling techniques were refined - ... read more

Last Saturday we went on our snowshoeing excursion to the Lost Lake. Snow shoes are great as they make it really easy to walk along even fairly icy slopes. Iain who had been quite indifferent was immediatley converted and even made noises about getting some of his own. Walking took a bit of getting used to as they make your feet about twice as wide and at least twice as long so you have to adjust your stance for that otherwise you are forever treading on yourself increasing the potential for tripping over. The trail we followed lead us through the woods, it was a lovely sunny afternoon and very peaceful tramping along in the snow listening out for hungry bears (think that was just me, in case the sunshine had woken them early). The trees ... read more

We had a great time last week with our friends Anna and Steve over here on holiday. The weather was great all week and we were sorry to have to wave them off on Sunday, the lucky pair were upgraded on the flight home which I am sure softened the pain of going back to work. Olympic fever has hit Whistler this past week, with the 1 year countdown starting on the 12th. The village centre has been over run with TV crews as they get ready for the celebrations. There's barely room to swing a snowboard so to speak, although getting taken out by a rogue pair of skis slung casually over a shoulder is always a danger. We had another decent amount of snow on Sunday night which caused a dilemma as Sunday night ... read more
