We had a great time last week with our friends Anna and Steve over here on holiday. The weather was great all week and we were sorry to have to wave them off on Sunday, the lucky pair were upgraded on the flight home which I am sure softened the pain of going back to work.

Olympic fever has hit Whistler this past week, with the 1 year countdown starting on the 12th. The village centre has been over run with TV crews as they get ready for the celebrations. There's barely room to swing a snowboard so to speak, although getting taken out by a rogue pair of skis slung casually over a shoulder is always a danger. We had another decent amount of snow on Sunday night which caused a dilemma as Sunday night is shaping up to be the weekly big night out and who wants their fresh snow day ruined by a hangover. One of our friends managed to win a pitcher of beer towards the end of the night and it must be the only time I've ever seen free booze go unwanted, I think at least two thirds were left behind. A good week,

so far, on the hill has ensued with a couple of great sunny days. The resort and mountains are noticeably quiet, we are not queuing at the lifts and it is difficult to hit a busy run. This is great for us in different ways, I've had plenty of room to improve without getting in the way of other mountain users and Iain has been able to go and seek out the untouched powder in peace. Today he hiked the Flute Bowl with one of the guys. This is no mean feat as it involves a 30 minute hike up to the top of the mountain from where you can pick the line of your choice for your 60 second journey to the bottom cruising through lovely soft powder, which is naturally what it's all about. So we are having lots of fun, however the resort is struggling and I am glad that we did not come looking for work because there are barely any seasonal jobs to be had this year as businesses cut back.

As we have not done much, other than go boarding, last Saturday we decided to get out and see some of the scenery

around Whistler village by walking one of the trails to the enticingly named Lost Lake. Little did we realise that in the winter walkers need to be on snow shoes and you are not allowed to walk the parks trails in the normal fashion, you have to pay to ski or snow shoe and they specifically maintain the trails for this purpose. We were a bit disappointed as it was Anna and Steve's last day and we thought a nice walk would be a good wind down. On our way back we discovered a tiny path cut up into the bank among the trees marked with a paw sign. This path is designated for dog walking and does not interfere with the other paying trails in the park. So heeding the warning about coyotes having been seen in the area we decided that we would try this trail and up we went. It was slow going, the path was single file and very slippery winding along a ridge which unsurprisingly no one really wanted to fall down, luckily there were plenty of trees to hold on to. The views I had been hoping for when we were planning the walk

didn't really materialise, no coyotes either, but it ended up being a mini adventure especially as we had no idea where we would end up. It tipped us out finally in a housing estate at the edge of the village and we wandered back, passing the time by choosing which house we would buy if we had the cash. This weekend we are planning a snow shoeing expedition so hopefully we will get to Lost Lake, it had better be worth it!
