Sooooooooooooo HOT! Had brekkie on Khao San Road, got a cab to a wholesale market later that day. Big mistake as the cab took forever to get back as the road blocks had expanded. Meter still runs even if you are not moving. Bought a nice summery dress for well cheap. Riot police hanging around everywhere but all pretty relaxed where we were as it was quite far away. Went out for beers with Ellie and met some English guys to have beers with. They were being stalked by a crazy thai lady who decided that squeezing my breast was acceptable as she wanted to compare Thai with Farang. It was not acceptable. Soon got rid of her as she chased her next victim. English guys were pretty helpful with Thai phrases as they basically lived ... read more

Made it to the airport fine and it actually has some nice views (as you know Frazer) including the cable car that I went on the other day. Spent all of my HKD coins (except the interesting ones for souvenirs) and got on the plane. I was a lot more calm than I had been on previous flights but it was strange seeing my first "wai". Instead of hadnshakes etc the Thai wai which is where you place your hands together at varying heights depending on who you are wai-ing to and then bow your head. When on a plane it sort of looks like they are praying which until you remember is a little unnerving on a flight!!! Got to the airport, all fine fine fine, got on my bus, not a problem thanks to ... read more

Dear All, Thanks for keeping up with the blog, it's so nice hearing you're messages... I can't believe you're still reading. Not sure what the photos will look like from there but should be OK. Asia March 26th 2010

Day 31 - Got the MTR (underground) to the Cable Car station that would take me to the Big Buddha. I was up really early so beat the crowds. Got a carriage all to myself which was nice. Its very high up and goes over several hills and lasts about 20mins. Dad would not have enjoyed it as it was quite windy in some places and the carriage rocked quite a lot. Seein the Big Buddha and attached monastry was really good.... it really was very big. Saw loads of these lovely big black butterflies floating around which was nice. I had chosen the right time to come as when I was leaving, the crowds of tourists started to swarm! Made it back to Central and then deceided that even though it was cloudy, I would ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island March 19th 2010

Woke up early and felt fine but decided to just lounge around in my comfy hostel bed. I then got up and headed off to the post office to send the last of my winter stuff home!!! Hurrah! I then had breakfast in the Starbucks in the JP Morgan and Stanley building... cheeky but nice Wondered around in the central area and then found what I really needed!! A Marks and Spencers!!! I was so excited. Lost a bit of weight while I've been away and my jeans were falling off me constantly but in Asia, the women have no hips and are very short. The biggest jeans i had found so far had been a 28 inch! Found a perfect pair and discovered I had dropped a dress size. I also stocked up on other ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou March 18th 2010

After my experience on Chinese trains and the lack of tickets available I decided to book a cheap flight to Guangzhou... I know I know, it's not exactly very eco friendly but I was a desperate lady. I'm fairly scared about flying so the fact I chose to fly just shows how desperate I was. Flying to Hong Kong would have been easier but a lot more expensive so I still decided to stick to the origional plan sort of. Instead of 9 hours it would only take 55mins and Chinese trains are expensive so worked out nearly the same price amazingly. I woke early so I got to the airport in plenty of time. Unfortunately my tummy had reacted badly to something from the day before which made the thought of my 40 minute bus ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo March 18th 2010

Woke early to go on my river boat tour to Yangshuo. I was really pleased that it looked like it was going to be a dry day but it was still cold outside. As we waited for the main bus to take us to the boat jetty, I noticed there were some swimmers in the river that runs around Guilin! Not just one crazy person but several... it was making me cold just watching them but I guess its just another crazy Chinese exercise craze. Not quite sure how shivering in a freezing river is healthy but maybe I am just now enlightened. Nearly crashed into an army truck driving on the wrong side of the road. Emergency brakes at the ready! Aparantly they do that quite a lot just because they can. Got on the ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Guilin March 18th 2010

Woke early again and set off to the seven stars park which was an easy 15 min bus journey. It was a really lovely park and I set off straight away to climb one of the peaks. I took it easy climbing the many many steps but was rewarded with an amazing views and already the sun was trying come out. There was of course, even right at the top of this hill, a man doing some stretching exercises (big thing in China). Another man joined him later to do some vocal exercises too... lovely! I then walked around and finally came across the monkeys the signs had all been warning about. I was cautious as getting attacked by a monkey wasn't really at the top of my agenda so I sat quietly and just watched ... read more

Asia March 13th 2010

Woke early to brave the showers. Water was nice and hot and it was generally a good shower but as soon as the water went off it was freezing while you were getting dry. Brrr! Still wasn't raining outside so I was a happy lady. Set off to find the bus to the Reed Flute Caves and found it. It was a really nice journey out of the city and I started to realised why people love Guilin. Caves were really impressive and although I went in with a big group I managed to go off on my own quite a lot and I really enjoyed it. Half way through there was a room off to the side which all I could work out was that you had to pay 5 yuan extra to go in ... read more

Asia March 13th 2010

Day 25 - Getting out of bed was a challenge. Everyone starred at me most of the time and didn't really say a word to me until I started writing my journal. I then attracted quite a crowd. We then started to chat (kind of) about where we we all lived and where we were going. They were also really interested in my lonely planet guide and the maps inside. It was quite nice after that but they all carried on laughing at my funny writing for quite a while. The view out of the window was quite nice and although I had to listen to the woman in the carriage next door play her Eric Clapton "Bad Love" ring tone over and over it was very pleasant to just watch the countryside go by. I ... read more
