Those of you that know me, know that I'm Catholic. However, those that know me well know that I'm not a practicing Catholic. Regardless, a group of us decided to check out the mass at the cathedral in Sevilla tonight for Ash Wednesday. Didn't understand a thing they said, but it was a typical Catholic mass. I'm still able to appreciate everything that Catholicism has to offer, even if I don't accept the bread and blood of Christ, or participate in other traditions while I'm there. Now I can say I've been to a Catholic mass in Spain, pretty cool. The cathedral is beautiful inside, it was my first time inside since I've been here. Here, they put the ashes on the very top of your head (so now it's all over my hair) instead of ... read more

Hellooooo. Thought I would update you on what my classes are like since I am going to school while I'm here. We officially register this Thursday, we've just been trying out classes for the last week and a half but I've narrowed my choices down to what I will be taking for the semester and got them all approved! On Mondays and Wednesdays I have Civil War Literature from 11-1pm and Literature and Cuisine from 1-3pm. They're both taught in Spanish and are already pretty tough. I don't really like or understand literature in English, so it's like 10X harder in Spanish, but my friends are taking them too so we'll figure it out. For the Literature and Cuisine class we learn about works of literature on Monday and then cook something related to it on ... read more

Friday our program took us all to Malaga for the day. I've uploaded pictures on facebook that you can check out. It's a beautiful city and the beach was amazing! Much cleaner than Sevilla right now, which was a nice break. We started with a walking tour of the city and checked out the cathedral there. It's beautiful inside, I can't believe how they built places like these. Eventually I'll start to get sick of looking at cathedrals, and remembering the specifics and differences between them, but they're always going to be beautiful to look at. Then we went to the Picasso Museum. Picasso was born in Malaga and then traveled to Madrid and Paris and a few other places throughout Europe. This museum has 250 pieces of his work, all the originals. I'm not an ... read more

Well I turned 21 yesterday, thank you everyone for the birthday wishes! I had class until 7 and then my roommate, Lindsay, and a few other girls that we've been hanging out with quite a bit went out for dinner. We were going to try this place that our program recommended with tapas but it was pretty crowded and we were starving. We ended up with margaritas and enchiladas at a mexican restaurant. It was really good! The girls paid for my dinner and drinks all night. They refused to let me pay on my birthday, it was very sweet. We went to a bar that this group called welovespain was hosting for international students. It was mostly americans and spaniards, but it was a lot of fun. Free shot at the door and free sangria ... read more

First day of school! We all talked about how we felt like freshmen again, lost in this huge school and speaking terrible Spanish. We'll get the hang of it soon, I hope. I went to 3 classes today, 2 of which I have decided not to take haha. One was not interesting and the other was too basic of a level of class for me. I'm going to try a few new classes tomorrow and then I think I'll have my schedule pretty much set for the rest of the week! It won't be official for another week or so though. All of my professors were very nice and not very intimidating, like I expected. I have alot of people from my program in my classes so we can study together which will be nice! This ... read more

Hi Everyone! My group of girls here and I have just been exploring Sevilla, it's a beautiful city! There are so many amazing plazas, cafes, and shopping here. We had our orientation at the University of Sevilla yesterday, and I start class on Monday. The first week of classes is just to go to a bunch of different classes that you're interested in to narrow it down to 4 or 5 that you want to take. We officially register for classes in 2 weeks. I will be taking 4 classes in Spanish to complete my major and then a photography class in English. I'm pretty nervous about school, it sounds pretty intimidating but I think being in spanish classes will help improve my communication with spaniards here. All of my classes are at the international school ... read more

Sevilla is 7 hours southwest of Madrid. We took a bus and left the hotel around 10 this morning, got to our families around 6:30pm. I met my family, a woman in her 50's name Paola, an older man in his upper 50's named Jose, a 14 year old boy named Sergio, and a 10 year old girl name Claudia. We had to roll our luggage a few blocks and I ran straight into a pole when I was talking with my host mom. It was pretty embarrassing but it seems to be happening a lot on this trip... When we first came to the house the family showed us around and let us unpack in our room for a while. Its pretty small, but bigger than the UW dorms in Madison. We have a large ... read more

Guess what I did last night!? I went DANCING. American Haley doesn't like to dance, but my roommate made me and it was so much fun. First time in a bar/ club in America, or here. For Mom: All of the students in my program are awesome. The guys made sure to keep an eye on the girls and walked us home after. We were all really good about looking after each other, it was nice. My roommate is really nice, so far we're getting along great. We seem to be pretty similar (we're both really indecisive, but just decided to make decisions for the other one) Today we left Madrid and drove to Toledo. I'll put pictures on facebook soon, but it is an amazing city. The architecture is unbelievable. I ate this dish called ... read more

Europe January 28th 2013

Well today was the longest day ever. I don't even really remember where it began but I've only slept about 6 hours in the last 48, so I'm heading to bed soon. We did a lot of exploring today. I met a nice group of girls, one is from New Jersey, another from Washington, two are from north/south Cali, one from Michigan, and another from Missouri. We drank espresso con leche, sangria, and ate pizza vegetal for lunch. Then we walked around a little bit and explored the train station, called Atocha in Madrid. We also had a panoramic bus tour of the city with the group, but I fell asleep, it hit me like a brick wall at that point. They suggested that we shouldn't sleep until bedtime so we can get one a schedule, ... read more

Hi everyone! I made it to Atlanta so far, I arrived around 9am and will be sitting here until my flight takes off for Madrid at 7:05pm tonight. It's going to be a long day... There were a lot of tears saying goodbye to my parents this morning, and now I'm trying not to cry alone at the airport, cause then people think I'm weird, and no one else here is crying. Mr. Wilda was awesome when I saw him this morning at the airport, bought me water and made me feel better about leaving my parents at security. At this point, I would say I'm anxious excited. When I talk to all my friends and family I get sad, but when I talk to the people from my program that I'll be meeting in a ... read more
