June 3rd 2010

Attached are photos from a week in Iceland in May. We saw geysers, glaciers, beaches. We drove through the ash cloud (and came out the other side) and soaked ourselves in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon. We experienced the 'runter' or pub crawl in Reykjavik (turning up at a pub at around 10pm in daylight and leaving it at around 3am in daylight was very confusing!). Went wale watching. Ate puffin! A very eventful week.... read more

'Hallelujah' screeched the woman a few seats away, 'God will save us.' She didn't actually say how or when this was going to happen but seemed utterly convinced that it would. She, unknowingly, had a captive and unimpressed audience. She continued shouting, and I think almost singing (if that's what you call it). She was even overcome with tears at one point. It was a great performance, although sadly I don't think she was really that aware of us. The suits - charcoal grey, black, pinstriped - were trying to ignore her. Some plugged into MP3 players or IPods, emitting audible repetitive beats, to block out the noise; others desperately trying to pretend she wasn't there disappearing further into their newspapers and books. The tourists - alarmed to start with, then almost enjoying the entertainment laid ... read more

Tuesday 15th July I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head since we arrived in Rio. We were staying at a hotel only about two blocks from Copacabana beach and I couldn’t believe I was actually here. We headed off to see the Corcovada - Christ the Redeemer - the iconic statue and landmark of Rio. It's a bit of a trip to get there. We got taxis to the bottom and then a different taxi took us to one view point of the statue and of Rio. After admiring the view and taking photos etc, the taxi took us to another spot where we then got a bus that took us to the point where we could actually gain entry to Corcovada and see Christ up close and personal. The statue ... read more

Saturday 12th July We left Paraty on a local bus and had a very scenic 2-3 hour ride. We had to go through a turnstyle on the bus which was a bit strange - to count us on apparently. The scenery was beautiful. We were driving along the coast for pretty much the whole journey and there were so many amazing white sandy beaches. If that wasn’t enough you could instead take in the luscious green forest which looked even more stunning with the backdrop of the blue sky and sea and the white beaches. We arrived in another little town which I've forgotten the name of and found our boat. We had a 2 hour journey to the island. I was a bit cold as I didn’t have a jumper with me (it was packed ... read more

Thursday 10th July We arrived in Sao Paulo bus station at around 9am after about a 15 hour bus journey from Iguazu. It had been a bit of an eventful journey. We had been on the bus for about 2 hours when the military boarded the bus all with fully loaded guns pointing at us. We sat very still as they searched nearly all of the guys on the bus. Poor Rob got a bit of a shock. He’d been in the loo when they boarded the bus and didn’t know anything was going on. When he came out one of the four men pointed his gun at him and had his finger hovering over the trigger. He lifted Rob’s shirt up to make sure he wasn’t carrying a weapon and then searched his stuff as ... read more

7th July - from the Brazilian side Arrived in Foz do Iguacu after another night bus and had a couple of hours to rest before being taken to see the infamous falls. I should point out that we were now in Brazil - well, that’s where we were staying - we seemed to be going in and out of Brazil and Argentina endless times. Ranked as the world’s second largest falls, Iguazu is located on the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Parguay. The Iguazu River forms a border between Argentina and Brazil with the best place to see the falls being from the Brazilian side looking towards Argentina. Hundreds of years ago the area belonged to the Guarani people, before the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese. In the Guarani language, Iguacu means ‘great waters’, which ... read more

We’re now in Uruguay. It only took an hour to get here from Buenos Aires. By ferry. We arrived in a lovely colonial town called Colonia. It was colonised by the Portuguese and is full of beautiful Portuguese pottery and lovely old buildings. Cobbled streets and lots of old cars - including loads of Fiat 600s. It was a bit chilly too. We went to El Drugstore for lunch - delicious food - I had the most enormous plate of gnocchi or ñoquis as it's spelt here. Then took in the sights of the historic part of the town. There’s an old street called Calle de los Suspiros or the Street of Sighs. It is a beautiful cobbled street with an old drain running through the middle of it. Reading that doesn’t make it sound beautiful ... read more

Seeing as South America is the place to watch football, it seemed only fitting to go to a match. It was Racing Club (the local team) vs Belgrano. It was a big match as it was the last of the season and Racing had to win to stay in the premier league whilst Belgrano had to win to move up. After a lot of persuading we managed to get a taxi to take all five of us to the Racing stadium. There were so many people around shooting off flares and fire crackers. Riot police were everywhere. The atmosphere was electric. We managed to get seats in the Belgrano side. We queued up with the other fans to get searched and then went to find the section that we were supposed to be sitting in - ... read more

We arrived at our hotel at around 8am after a 20 hour bus journey. We were in Buenos Aires. The city of ‘good winds’ so-called because the good winds made it easy for sailors to get there. I had a bit of a sleep and we were ready to start exploring by 11am. First stop was Café Tortoni - the oldest café in Buenos Aires at 150 years old. It had a very European feel to it and it was unsurprisingly full of tourists. There were also what appeared to be some locals there too. I played spot the tourist and tried to work out where people were from. The Americans were the easiest to spot! We ordered the Tortoni breakfast - coffee, orange juice, ham and cheese toasted sandwiches and a cake of our choice. ... read more

Goodbye Chile. We left for Bariloche and Argentina today on a bus that took around 7 hours. Amazingly passport control went without a hitch - although my bag was one of those picked out by another friendly dog (a professional sniffer dog this time though) to be checked. It was pretty much turned upside down and inside out. The guy even unzipped my washbag, unwrapped some of the souvenirs I had so carefully packed and basically made it very difficult for me to squash everything back in again. We arrived at about 1pm to a VERY VERY windy city. And it was so cold as well. It was supposed to be a great ski resort….when there’s snow….but there had only been 3cm so skiing definitely wasn’t going to be something we were going to be doing ... read more
