Oh those unforeseen meetings. We stopped at a market in the little town of Lit. We were discussing what we needed to get when 2 ladies bicycled up and said hello and asked us where we had come from and where we were headed. Turns out they were mother and daughter, Inger and Marielle, and Marielle was scheduled to fly to the US in 2 days to bike across the US with her girl friend! After some discussion they offered us their cabin for the night, (we had crawled out of the tent to a chilly 38 degree morning that day), along with dinner and breakfast so we we could discuss touring, Marielle's first trip! What a fantastic time! We talked a lot of bike and touring, but Inger also showed us around her property on ... read more

Europe » Sweden August 23rd 2017

Hi all! We followed the truckers advice and we're having a great ride. We're on the E45. Great scenery, good road, and not much traffic. Weather is still challenging, mist and showers most days and it's cool, low 50's and the report for tomorrow is a high of 47. But we're so happy to be away from the E4. This morning we were riding along and saw a sign for a campground and cafe so we rode down a dirt road for 300 meters and around a bend saw a number of kennels and various breeds of sled dogs. We pulled into the cafe and it was all about mushing. We had a great cup of coffee and talk with one of the owners. She and her husband are from Switzerland and wanted someplace with more ... read more

Well we've made it to Sweden! However, I had hoped our route down the E4 in Sweden would be along the bay of Bothnia and a great ride, but turns out it's miserable!!! Cars and trucks going well over 60mph, a rumble strip, and a narrow shoulder. We tried some back roads initially but got thoroughly lost. Not one of our better days! Yesterday I met an Italian bike tourist on his way to Nordkapp and he had exactly the same experience. His Garmin sent him all over the country and back and Google maps on his iphone kept directing him to the E4. He's not happy but he's forging on. After today we said forget it, it's too dangerous, too fatiguing, and just not fun. Early on we had met a fellow on a Victory ... read more

Europe » Finland August 12th 2017

Wow it's been awhile since I last posted! as per a post on Facebook, we're at a campground outside of Rovaniemi on the river Ounasjoki on the arctic circle. A day off to do laundry and groceries and then visit a couple of museums in the big city! The timber industry and paper making are very big here. We saw a train loaded with pulp wood logs that seemed to go on forever!!! Still meeting a few bike tourers headed to Nordkapp! We had our first real bout of headwinds, but in general the the riding here in Finland has been much more relaxed, not those big Norwegian climbs! Finland has been forests and lakes.... read more

Europe » Finland August 5th 2017

Hello all! We're in Finland. Interesting in that there was no border crosssing control. There was a customs office on the Norwegian side and we stopped in and asked if they wanted to see our passports but no, not interested! We then stopped in Inarvi at a market to get supplies and caused a minor international event. We purchased our groceries and went to the checkou. It was very busy and we had a line behind us when the cashier got halfway through checking she stopped and said we had to weigh all our produce and place the price sticker on it. Naturally not realizing that there was a code on the shelf for each item and that number had to be entered into the electronic balance which then printed out a price tag, we totally ... read more

Europe » Norway August 1st 2017

We've covered a lot of ground since my last post. The wifi is so sketchy it's a challenge to post regularly! Some big rides. Our longest day, (99Km), was also our longest climb; started with a 7% 3 Km climb followed shortly by 10Km of 3% to 5% with stiff head winds. We reached a beautiful alpine zone that seemed to stretch for miles. At least we found a quiet campsite and took a nice cabin. The next day we rode into Hammerfest and to by pass the long under sea tunnel we took the Hurtigruten excursion ship to Honnigsvag. Fun to see the country from a different perspective, but required getting up at 4am to catch the ship. Honnigsvag is at the base of the ride to Nordkapp. We had planned to rest and go ... read more

Hello All! We rode into Alta this afternoon. The weather finally broke and we've had several days of beautiful sunny warm weather. Wifi continues to be limited and that will probably continue as we get farther north. We'll probably spend a rest day here and then move on. Continuing to see reindeer wander on to the road and also harbor porpoises near fish farms. Hope all is well with everyone!!!... read more

Hooray, we've made it to Bodo, gateway to the Lofotens. Two nights ago we were camped when a bike tour company, 'bike-dreams.com', pulled in. One big truck and 2 smaller. They quickly set up tents and tables as 40 riders began riding in! Quite an operation with 6 support staff. They were well away from us and except for a morning rush on too few bathrooms they were good neighbors. By 8:30am they were all gone, riders off and trucks gone! We were off for a 53 mile ride with lots of hills and rain. We went through several tunnels. They're nice in that they cut out some of the big climbs, but they are freezing inside and the roar of traffic is really rough. We were well tired by the end of the day. Luckily ... read more
