Township Tour We were joined on this tour by a Canadian couple who claimed to be researching and photographing for a book they intended to have published. He immediately set about demonstrating himself to be an ignorant, demanding and insensitive cretin. When they guide couldn't understand him, Al started raising the volume - everything said louder must be more comprehensible! He appeared to have little concept that he might use his knowledge of English to rephrase the question differently to help the guide understand. His next trick was then not to bother listening. We had just had explained what the major industries people in the townships were involved in, when Al asked what people did for work. Then his partner developed a headache, and just had to be returned to her hotel. No thought about how ... read more

Sand Madness This was one of those great days where the unprofessionalism and incompetence of the activity operator cannot mask what is at its heart a really great, fun day. Despite their best efforts to convince all and sundry they were incompetent nincompoops by forgetting to collect two passengers, and having to turn around an already full Kombi and pick them up so that all eight of us were sharing just six seats, and then having a nightmare drive where every 'STOP' sign appeared to mean go faster and the difference between sealed and and unsealed road was so infintesimal as to be undetectable, this was a really great experience. There was a reasonably hard trudge into the place we would use for the rest of the morning as our return point, but once there, each ... read more

Dune 45 and other things Great day today - arrived at Sesrim and explored the canyon, set up camp, went out to the National Park and then onto Dune 45 for a brilliant sunset. Walked along the length of Dune 45 - tough going but well worth the effort. Martina is promising to be the guide from hell. This is the fourth day in a row that she has said something about my being slow, in the road, etc, etc. She will shortly rival the airhead Lisa from last years South America trip. Kumuka do know how to pick them. ... read more

Orange River Last night was our first real camp. Felix Unite is well set up, and we were allocated one of the lawn areas close to the amenities. Everything worked reasonably smoothly, although I suspect that we will get much better at the routine things like setting up and knocking down the campsites as the trip progresses. Feed the man meat Had a BBQ meal last night and again tonight. Big servings of meat on the menu - far more than we really need, especially while we are travelling and not exercising that much. Canoeing Had a good long walk this morning. Arrived back to find that the canoe trip guides wanted to leave earlier than we had been notified, and so did not get a shower or shave after my walk. Martina had the gall ... read more

Short drive - long drink Today was what might be called a 'warmer/settler' day. Not too much time in the truck, introduction to dorm living and an alcohol fuelled tour of four regional wineries where the normal conventions of responsible service of alcohol were completely ignored. After the truck brief, we finally got away about 0930hrs, and were at Stellenbosh a little over an hour later. Much better views of Table Mountain! Stumblin Inn We arrived at a rather down at heal backpackers where the group was split up over two rooms. Given the gender mix - 16 pax, about 2/3 female - it was not going to be possible to have a boys and girls dorm. Especially when the four place room was a double and bunk beds. So much for any notion that we ... read more

I did not get to paraglide off Lion's Head! It was the one thing that I was really looking forward to, and it just was not a happening thing. I did get to walk up most of it yesterday, but didn't see all that much - it was cloudy, and I was in the cloud for most of the time. I then hit the turnaround time that I had set for myself, and was short of the peak. Today wasn't that much better. All looked fine for a great walk up onto Table Mountain, but I got about 30 minutes into the walk up Platakloof Gorge and it was back in the cloud. This was serious rain, helped along by the run-off from the top of the gorge walls. Did this in about 67 minutes, which ... read more

Had a wonderful 'tour' today. Carlos runs tours around Intramuros, and two friends and I joined him this morning for a short walk and one of the best two and a half hours I have spent. Carlos is a performer, using his skills to give us a eclectic and entertaining view of the good and bad Intramuros. We really only visited two places, but he used these to weave a such a brilliant design in our minds that I think everyone went away with a new view of Manila and its place in our history and our world. It would be a shame to tell too much. First, because it would be impossible to give it the same passion that Carlos was able to imbue. Second, because it would spoil it for you. If you have ... read more

Arranged a tour out to TAAL Volcano. This was a fairly soft day overall, but I did get to walk up another volcano, and admire the view. Typical arranged tour, with standard stops at fruit stalls, etc of the driver's choice. As the only pax for this trip for this company, was given the VIP treatment - I think that meant that I could ask anything, and then just had to take the response with a grain of salt. Trip across the lake to the island was by a motorised outrigger canoe. Basically a fibreglass hull with bamboo trunk outriggers on both sides. Was raining, but not badly, and it stopped by the time we reached the island. As we walked up to the track to the volcano, there was a yard full of horses and ... read more
