The final leg of our 2002 trip to Galipolli was a weekend in Paris. We travelled by bus from Nottingham and crossed under the English Channel in the tunnel. E had thought that we were going be ferry, but that was not to be. Learnt how to use the Metro, and went shopping, to the Louvre and markets, and walked along the Seine just as people were opening up their stalls. Return journey to UK uneventful, except by now it was clear the E suffered from claustrophobia in tunnels. She was glad to see the last of the Chunnel!... read more

This was the trip that started the travel madness. E had won a prize from Ansett Airlines to go anywhere in Australia, and one from Air New Zealand to go anywhere on their network. Then Ansett went broke, and Air New Zealand said they would honour the prize with a trip to any destination in NZ. We were saving up to go to Gallipoli in Turkey for Anzac Day, so we were not interested in spending a lot, so decided to travel to Auckland for the Australia Day long weekend. ... read more

Crossing the Rockies Caught the train across the Rockies from Vancouver to Calgary. Left in the evening, and by early morning we were well into the foothills, and spent most of the day in the Rockies. Arrival in Calgary was interesting! We had booked a hotel from the Qantas brochure because it was relatively cheap, only to find that it was a $75 (in 1984) taxi ride from the airport. My first lesson in total cost of ownership thinking. Ontario Flew from Calgary to Toronto, and then by train to stay with friends of Sylvia's for a week.
