Thank you Doug
Lovely to hear from you, Doug. Say' hello' to the eucalypts, even if they're 'sad'! Margaret

Loved Portugal
Hello Doug, my husband and I walked from Lisboa to St Iago de Compostella in 2018 and loved the path through very old villages and pine forests. There are some very long sections before Coimbra and particularly, Porto, because walking from Lisboa is rarer. Would love to talk to you if this is part of your pilgrimage this year. Thank you for the comments about vaccination status and travelling via Dubai…very helpful. Our next trek is St Olavsleden in 2023 and we would enjoy talking to you about your pilgrimage there. Walk well!

Happy to chat
I'm happy to chat about my experience on ghd St Olavs Ways. I don't expect to be in a position to respond properly before mid-Jun when I will be back home for a while.

Packing is challenging!
Best of luck, Doug. I'll be interested to follow your journey.

Thank you!
That was absolutely delightful, Doug! I'm not too sure I want to walk nearly a thousand kilometres myself but I do admire your determination. I'd like to do the Camino before I get too old and frail. Your notes gave a good overall impression of the beauties and challenges of the pilgrimage. And thanks for the photos. It looks most picturesque. I was in Europe at the same time, doing a RTW with my wife. Kyoto, Istanbul, and then the BookCrossing convention in Amsterdam when the volcano thing kicked in. We had a week to kill basically, and I was thinking about hiring a car and driving down to Spain but we had some friends and instead we wedged five of us - and our bags - into a Golf and headed for Switzerland under blue and empty skies. It was fun and I saw a lot of places I wouldn't have had in my normal travels. So glad to drop off one friend in Switzerland and have just the four of us. At least I wasn't walking up hill and down dale. Thanks, again! Peter

getting old
You keep complaining about getting old! This is a recurrent theme, but what are you doing about it? I, for example, have refused to cave to the aging process. People say I become more childish each year, proof of my success in this venture. Just saying.

How Exciting
You are amazing Doug - still tackling such major walks. I have total confidence that you will overcome all the travel challenges, and that you will complete both walks successfully. I hope the weather is kind to you and that you enjoy your pilgrimages.

Twinned pilgrimages
Here's the trek I'll be doing later this year (cross fingers). It's twinned with the Camino and dual pilgrims who present both completed passports at the temple get a certificate and a ceremony: https://walkjapan.com/tour/kumano-kodo-pilgrimage https://www.tb-kumano.jp/en/kumano-kodo/dual-pilgrim/

Congrats!
I've enjoyed your blogs, Doug. You must feel as though this is a major achievement - and huge satisfaction at having completed it. What's next?!

What's next?
It's not clear yet when or where my next pilgrimage will be. I am still attracted to the idea of walking alone, which is easier to do in northern Europe than in Spain. We will see.

Congratulations
Well done Doug. We look forward to having you back and hearing more about your wonderful journey. You can start planning the next!

Reports
Hi Doug. Good to be able to do this (sort of) vicariously with you. Please, keep the reports coming, as you can manage. Are photos possible, too?

Photos
Monika, I haven't worked out how to get photos from my camera to my tablet. If I can, I will share them. Otherwise I am putting the occasional phone photo onto Facebook. Doug

The Heat
Sounds like an intense first day Doug. The team at the office was thinking of you this week. Great to hear your update. My imagination hadn't conjured up heat sufficient to melt bitumen. I hope the sealed roads end soon if that continues!

Hot roads
I think there must be some ideal composition of rock and bitumun, and mix of the bitumun itself, that keeps the surface stable in the heat. As for the weather - a walking pilgrim has to be walking, and has little choice if one wants to complete it as a walk. The temptation to stop walking is always there - I expect it will be somewhere in the background right to the very end.

Good luck!
Looking forward to updates every so often, Doug ... and lots of luck. Stay safe!

El Camino
Hi doug Great to read your blog. I did Camino in Sept 2011. I was almost 70 when I finished. Best thing I ever did! Hope to finish your blog later. Regards, John Grierson Fremantle. Western Australia

TREADING LIGHTLY
The big 6-0 is coming up next July. I cannot control the thoughts which have possessed me. I want to roam - preferably walking - everywhere. I came upon your blog while looking for information regarding El Camino de Santiago. You are living my future life at the moment. Hope you are having a grand day.

Granon
I stayed in the Alberge at Granon in 2010 and 2011 and the male Hospitalerio there was nasty and I wonder if he maybe had a mental illness. I met many pilgrims along the way who had the same view but cannot find any chat on the forums pointing this out. My first camino in 2005 was wonderful and the hospitalerio at Granon was kind and courteous but this latest fellow is awful. I will never stay there again.

Following your journey
Great to follow along with you. I did the walk about 3 years ago and enjoyed it as much as you seem to be. How is the Budsjord owner's husband doing? He had to be in a care home when I was there, but hoped to come back home soon. I didn't do a blog; what a good idea. I kept some notes and wrote "Step By Step from Oslo to Trondheim" when I got back home. What a life-changing experience!
