Arrived in Auckland after a fantastic week in the Yasawa islands of Fiji. (Quickly dug a fleece out the bag.) A little Toyota Shuttle wagon took us to our hostel…. (nice idea…..cheap shared taxis to your door!) Next day went for a long walk along the Auckland coastline…. Got sunburnt. Went up the Sky Tower Revolving Restaurant for a meal on my birthday…..had a lovely meal….but the revolving restaurant is a con….. The windows and the central kitchens and bar stay still….. Only the dinner tables on a large sort of ’washer’ rotate&he [View Full Entry]

Here it is

From Puno we went to our next destination, Ollaytaytmbo, where we were to leave for our hike along the Inca trail and Machupicchu, very daunting. At Ollaytaytambo there are some very nice ruins which we were guided around, (some of the stone were enormous, it made you wonder how they got them there), and a fairly decent market for some retail therapy. We got up early for breakfast and handed our 6 kilo bags to the guide for our porters to carry for the next 4 days, these bags are part of the load carried by the porters and weighed everyday before [View Full Entry]

We arrived at the floating islands of Uros, and what a beautiful site it was. The photo’s do not do it justice. We were greeted by the family from the island we had chosen to visit, then we sat down as you would have sat in school to be lectured about the islands, how the people came to be here, how the islands were constructed and how the communities worked, that sort of stuff, very interesting. We were shown foods that were eaten on the islands, (fish and reeds), some of the reeds we tried, not bad. We were then led [View Full Entry]

Back to Quito now and a final meal and drink with the guy’s and gal’s from the trip to the Galapagos Islands and my first ever Mojito, not bad. Three of us are travelling together to the Inca trail and Machupicchu, Gary and Vickey. They both live in Sittingbourne, just along the road from me, so we have a lot in common to talk about. We, the three Amigo’s, got up early to catch a 7.15 flight only to find it had been cancelled. They put us on the next flight at 18.15. Our theory is that they only had enough [View Full Entry]

We left Quito at an early hour to catch our flight to the Galapagos Islands, making one stop on the way at a place I won’t even try to pronounce. We landed on Baltra Island around midday and were soon on our way to the dock to board our boat, ‘GAP 1’ or ‘Pelikano’, its proper name. Given that the islands always look deserted when shown on documentaries, the size of the airport took me by surprise. Once on board, I was also surprised at how nice the cabins were, with a separate shower and toilet, air con and comfy looking [View Full Entry]

Hi to all, the flights from Panama City to Quito via San Jose were pretty uneventfull, apart from losing a nights sleep at Panama airport, because the flight was very early and I had to be there for 3am, so decided to spend the night there. Said a very sad farewell to Wendy, who left on a flight several hours before mine. (very down). The planes used by TACA airlines are like new. and put a lot of UK operators to shame. Quito seems like a very nice place, its clean and not too busy. The hotel I am in is [View Full Entry]
