We saw a solitary sign for World Super Bikes close to Philip Island…..so we went there for a long weekend, bonus, in the process making new friends, Phil and Kent, his son, (very apt as that is where we are from), and Richard and his absent new wife, (he was on honeymoon), she is not into bikes. We stayed with Richard and his new wife in Cowes before we left Philip Island. We watched the famous Penguin Parade….cute little things, and they walk such a long way inland (often up steep hills) to their burrows (or deluxe handmade boxes, still don’t know how they do that, small ‘beak held’ tools I guess). They hang around by the water till there’s a good size gang, and its dark enough not to get scoffed by predators, and then ... read more

Hello again, bit slow in putting these together, long days travelling and not the coverage with wifi etc. Currently in Alice Springs, rather odd name as there in no water here, just getting over last nights celebrations for St George, (dont remember coming home). We got in with a good crowd of Bikies, 'Vietnam Veterans' who are here to parade on Anzac day 25th April. Anyhow, after we escaped the road works around Melbourne, we found ourselves heading towards Philip Island, we had seen a poster that indicated that the World Superbikes were on the island that weekend, so the next few pictures are from the racing. Congratulations to Leon Haslam for his podium finish in race 2. We made some new friends while at the races, Phil a lecturer and his son Kent, and a ... read more

We could smell the smoke as soon as we started our descent into Melbourne from the fires that had occurred in Victoria recently. We took a cab out to Diamond Creek, north east of the city….. It was so dry and brown, not a green blade of grass anywhere. Martin and Jane had offered kindly put us up. This was a nice gesture as Martin is volunteer fireman and has been a bit busy lately. We got an invite to a BBQ at another couple of friend’s place, Dave and Cynth, and caught up with ex work colleagues’ who emigrated over here for work purposes at Visy Paper. Then off down the pub to meet others, and have a jolly good time. While we stayed with Martin and Jane we went out for day trips with ... read more

Just to confuse you all, this blog for Fiji should have been entered before New Zealand, but I got a bit distracted by New Zealand’s beauty. This is where we were for a week in November. We left from L.A. for Fiji, after a brief delay to swap planes due to a problem with our scheduled aircraft, we got something towed from its slumber that had panels missing and seemed old for a Jumbo. The flight was a bit long, but as it was dark we got a bit of sleep. We landed in Nadi and were transferred to our hotel with ease, after being given a very friendly Fiji welcome, juice and a shell necklace. The hotel in Nadi was good, with good food and a good bar. The following morning we arose early for ... read more

We decided to hang around for a while as the dive shop had planned a dive to the Lermontov a few days later. The following day the sun was still shinning so we decided to go out on a boat safari in Kenepuru Sound. We went out with 2 other couples and a guide. We each had a little aluminium boat with a 10hp outboard. We whizzed about having great deal of fun, considering the minimal power. We watched the harvesting of green mussels; the guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, as always. We searched for eagle rays in the shallows and walked along a remote bit of shoreline to see a 1000 year old rimu tree. We got to see many exclusive, hard to access holiday homes.….. And many for sale, recession here too. Many campsites ... read more

After the spit tour we went of to see Cape Farewell, the most northerly part of the south island, then round to Wharariki Beach on the top of the west coast….what a contrast to Golden Bay and Abel Tasman, wild and windy…. Beautiful but much too dangerous for swimming. We then went and had a look at Devils Boots …a couple of big rocks, strangely…. looking like a pair of huge boots. We walked through some nice rock fromations near Pohara. I persuaded Kev to drive right back round the bay, through Pohara, Tata Beach and Wainui Bay the into the Abel Tasman to Totaranui (which is usually the end of the walk from Marahua. 71km) I couldn’t persuade him to get a water taxi to Bark Bay and walk back (so we’d have walked the ... read more

Into the new year now, so time for an update. We left Hanmer Springs after Christmas and headed for Nelson, (via Murchison). Our lovely adopted parents tucked us into the van and checked our seat belts…. Gave us slabs of cake wrapped in festive napkins for the journey and waved us off, videoing our departure…. We left our Santa and Rudolf in their care… and they duly promised to take them caravanning with them, always. We got t Nelson a day earlier than our campsite booking so decided to head towards French Pass….. The road was fantastic, I didn’t think the poor old van would make it. The roads were steep, narrow and winding, and I’d say, more scenic than the road to Milford Sound. We encountered many land slides onto the road and a few ... read more
