Not too much to report today except to say that the bird park that Pam has waited to see for many years was outstanding and she managed to photograph her favourite bird, the Shoebill, Bree and I reckon it is the ugliest bird in the world. We spent all day there leaving around 4.00pm after Pam and Bree spending up large in the shop. Saying our goodbyes to Walter and Maria our Bavarian friends it was off to find a new camp site in Kellenburg some 50k out of Walsrode, a nice enough place without being outstanding it was the cheapest camp site in Europe so far being only 20Euro, recommended by us as a good place.... read more

Leaving a little late today we headed off to Walsrode, the bird park Pam has been waiting for, the largest in the world, so they say and it has the Shoebill, what I reckon is the ugliest bird in the world. But before that it is off to see the monument to Hercules, say what a Greek god in Germany but I kid you not it was. We drove up there as we didn't fancy the 507 steps from the bottom. This monument was built circa 1700 and is in the process of being restored but it is a fantastic structure a huge stone edifice around 100m high and a base of maybe 100m diameter with the bronze statue of Hercules on the top. Leaving here it was off to Stockhausen the name of the town ... read more

Off again with the Tomtom loaded for the days destination of Kassel some 200km north and we decided on straight up the autobahn, oh shit not again, before we go any further on this blog I have to tell you about the German drivers, it is no wonder Germany produces some of the best F1 drivers in the world on a regular basis, they practice on the bloody autobahns, trust me you may think hey cool no speed limits but when you are new to the right hand drive roads and you have big Merc's and BMW's blowing past you at better than 180k you wake up and smell the roses. Add to that they have no manners at all just like Auckland drivers, if you are in the wrong lane more than a couple of ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt am Main March 18th 2011

After 30 minutes delay leaving London and a further 30 minutes in a holding pattern over Frankfurt, we finally arrived in Germany. Going through immigration was a breeze as was Customs as none of the booths were manned so it was a walk through! We picked up up our camper from McRent and we are not impressed. It is NOT the internal configuration we choose and we couldn't change it. It is really small inside but we will just have to make do. Their comeback was that it is brand new, we are the first to use it.... so what, We need the space! We entered the Street address of the supermarket into our trusty friend Tomtom GPS and off we went. Very stressful for Mark driving a left hand vehicle on the wrong side of ... read more

Well dropping off the camper this morning posed no problems and a clean bill of health was given for the van, no dings dents or scratches. Just Go were kind enough to drop us off at Luton airport where we planned to get a public bus over to Heathrow where we are staying at the Novotel close to the airport to catch our plane in the morning. I was stressing about using a public transport bus but a shuttle was about 120 pounds and the bus was only 50, a no brainer really. I gotta say the public transport system here is brilliant and after a coffee we picked up the bus and settled back to an hours drive to Heathrow, I slept, surprise surprise most of the way, a short walk through the terminal a ... read more

Leaving Oxford quickly (after a good sleep in) as what a boring Town it is, the day was typical English dreary, low fog and bloody freezing it was a day that we really had nothing planned so we headed on back down towards London as we had to drop the camper off early the following day. It is surprising that you drive a few miles over here and the landscape changes dramatically, from sleepy village lanes and stone walled fields to larger roads and scenes that would look right at home in the Waikato, farms everywhere and the funny thing is that you are in the middle of the countryside and come around a corner to a roundabout and there right in front of you is a new car dealership, cross the roundabout the countryside again ... read more

Heading off this morning to Stratford-Upon-Avon, which is still in the Cotswolds, the birthplace of Shakespeare, a quaint old town again dating back to Norman times nestled on the banks of the Avon River. We walked the streets of Stratford-Upon-Avon and saw the house where Shakespeare lived with Anne Hathaway but did not go in due to the cost, when you've seen inside one old house you seen em all I guess. Bree saw the witches and warlocks museum and insisted we go there. We walked through the lower level and Bree went upstairs to the museum on her own, Pam and I not being witchy people declined, Bree loved it. Visiting the new Royal Shakespeare Company building was nice and the back streets of Stratford-Upon-Avon are just spectacular, all in all though Stratford-Upon-Avon was a ... read more

With and early start today we headed off to the sleepy little village of Morton on Marsh to visit the Birds of Prey park which boasted a Golden Eagle and many other Raptors, well Pam was in heaven and the photo opportunities were many. We arrived at the perfect time with the birds being flown at 11.30 we saw Horace the Owl, Jimmy and Rosie the vultures and Tommy the Falcon fly free, the Falconer was an absolute riot cracking jokes and making the whole display very comfortable. He did have trouble though with Jimmy the young Vulture, he couldn't be bothered coming back and took off over to the park and no amount of coaxing could get him back. Leaving here we set off for our next destination, shopping for Bree in Gloucester, we found ... read more

The Cotswolds is a section of South West England stretching from Bath in the south up to Chipping Camden in the North and is quite literally spectacular with very old and tiny little villages dotted through a lovely rolling countryside with small forests and farmland on either side of the road. There are narrow little tree lined lanes and specular churches and manors all around. Our aim for the day was to see "Bourton on the Water" another lovely little town on our way and what do you know another Bird park, I am sure there is a conspiracy going on here, but the town was really cool with a little canal running right through the center. Much of the village is circa 1600 and parts perhaps dates back as far as the Norman times possibly ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Caerphilly March 12th 2011

Off to the great rugby nation Wales today, it rained of course, it had to happen, with virtually no rain on the trip so far it was only a matter of time. Using the main motorway for the first time this trip it took little time to reach the mighty Severn River, coming around this bend we saw this huge bridge structure and looking to the right we saw its twin some 7-8 miles up river. to wales just to say we had been there but we found this fantastic old castle call Caerphilly Castle, built around 1300 originally to defend Wales from the hordes from Scotland and England but was never really put to the test as around 1644 during the Civil war between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists they went and gave up and ... read more
