Off to explore the old town this morning and what a lovely old town it is, located on the northern shores of a huge mountain lake there are little alleyways ducking and diving all over the place with shops set back into deep doorways and cafes every second shop. There are little canals running through the whole area with buildings built right up to the edge almost what we expect Venice to be like. Settling in at a small café for my daily espresso the girls wanted coffee and hot chocolate respectively we just watched the world go by. We also found finally that many of the shops close at 12.00 and don’t open again till 2.00 and stay open until 7.00, like a little siesta in the afternoon. Heading off to a shop called FNAC ... read more

Leaving this quaint town we headed to Annecy to meet a friend of Pam’s for dinner fondue if you please. The one thing we have found with our trusty Tomtom is that it will take you usually through the center of a town making a bloody drama at times because some city streets we not made with camper vans in mind and meeting crazy French drivers coming the other way can be daunting. The distance we had to travel today was quite a lot so we did not waste too much time as we wanted to head down through the wine region of Burgundy and then over the mountains to Annecy through Geneva, Switzerland, about 250kms all up and some of it slow going through the mountains. Firstly across to Burgundy and a lovely drive through ... read more

Waking early we set off to explore Auxerre and found some neat little streets and alleys. Like many places we have been to there is much re-construction going on both on the buildings and the streets. Finally leaving Auxerre we headed south again deciding against going to Dijon and instead going past some 30kms to a little village called Auxonne a commune in the Côte-d'Or department in Bourgogne in eastern France, again located on the Saône river. On the way we passed an old abandoned chateau at Saint More and set off to explore it, very cool with a moat and all, it appeared to have been lived in recently but was very run down, sad really. All the time since leaving Paris we have not been on a single motorway and have kept strictly to ... read more

Leaving a little late we were off to see the Palace of Versailles, oh how things get on a roll it was bloody closed on Mondays so we missed it, feeling somewhat robbed we decided to leave dodge and head south for warmer weather. Plotting in the route for Dijon which was our next destination we bid farewell to gay Paris and hit the road again. Traveling roughly south we wound our way slowly through rolling fields and farms finally arriving late in the evening at Auxerre, planning to stay in the campground we found it was closed and being around 6.30 I started to get a little worried as to where we were going to stay. Bree to the rescue she had spotted some other motor homes in a car park alongside the river in ... read more

Back to the hop on bus, we are getting better at the transport system and it took less time to get to town today. On the bus our first stop was the Eiffel tower and as usual some of it was under bloody refurbishment and getting to the top was not going to happen, we got to the second level about 1/3 the way up and what a view, we decided to walk down the stairs all 600 odd of them, bloody legs hurt all day after that. The Eiffel tower was just spectacular and way way bigger than you expect. The number of people there is hard to explain and it is surprising the damn tower doesn’t fall over, shoulder to shoulder all the way. Off to the Louvre it is spectacular, the Mona Lisa ... read more

It was with great excitement that we woke the next morning refreshed and raring to see “Paris-the city of love” We chatted to the very helpful staff at the camp ground reception and while limited in English and us limited in French we got directions for the bus to catch, we thought to town, the 244 to Metro we were told and only a 15 minute trip. In broken English we were also told that after we got off the bus we could then catch the train or walk to the city, hmm sounds great eh. Little did we know what was in store for us, it turns out that you HAVE to catch the train cos its bloody miles to the city, then a short walk to catch the “hop on hop off bus that ... read more

Were are off this morning to Paris after finding no camping places at all in Belgium we decided to just pass right through and to the 450kms to Paris in one hit, it would make up a day we were behind. While Belgium had some pretty countryside it was nothing special, however due to a wrong turn on the freeway we ended up in Waterloo by accident. We had planned on coming here as it is the scene of the battle of Waterloo that Napoleon was involved in way back whenever, my history is not that good. We stumbled on this really cool palace and monument to Leopold one of the kings of Belgium, again a nice bonus but nothing spectacular. Onwards gain on the motorway we finally passed the French/Belgium border and were told that ... read more

Leaving the city of Amsterdam we headed off towards Rotterdam to call in at a place called Kinderdijk, an area of canals and windmills that Pam wanted to see. Kinderdijk is some 20k south of Rotterdam and after an event less we arrived there around 1.30, there were no campgrounds around so we searched for a place to free camp for the night. We found this great little place in a car park for the ferry at Alblasserdam, set well back off the road and alongside the canal. To find it you turn left off the main road to Kinderdijk around 200m meters from the town square. After that we headed off to the canals for Pam to take some pics, it was a very cool spot and well worth the trip there. The 19 windmills ... read more

After a well deserved sleep in we may stay here for another day as Pam still has work to do. We awoke to a foggy morning and quite cold after yesterdays 19 degrees and heard a woodpecker in the trees, couldn’t find see him though. A quick decision was made and we decided to head for Amsterdam to see the sights that famous city has to offer, We first headed to our campground called Camping Zeeburg, well if you didn’t have a GPS it would be hard to find, we wound down this little lane between old boats and little hovels to a little oasis bounded by the river on one side and a canal on the other. Typical of this trip the place was under renovation so the facilities were a little sub standard but ... read more

Departing Kellerberg we decided to head straight for a larger town for an internet connection as Pam had to work so we decided on Enshede on the German Holland border. I have to say now after a couple of days the Autobahns are not so intimidating as earlier, I figured when in Germany do as the Germans do so I just put the foot down and drove like a crazy German driver. It was kind of cool making our first border crossing but all you see now is a small sign that you are now in the Netherlands, why they call it this instead of Holland I don’t know. What a drama it seems that much of Holland is closed for motor homes until the end of April and after visiting 2 camp grounds that were ... read more
