Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre April 10th 2011

Starting out a little late this morning as we all slept in we headed for Cinque Terra or La Spezia depending on where we could fine a camp place, we had earmarked a spot but decided it was way to far away and thought we would find another free spot or campground, boy were we wrong, this part of Italy at least is very camper van unfriendly, so mountainous and steep with houses and buildings on every available space there is, with very little left for poor old camper vans. On the way we headed out to Portofino to see if there was anything out there and we wanted to see it anyway, was that a mistake or what, we got on the road to Portofino and before we knew it we were on a road ... read more

Leaving Nice was a pleasure as it was not my idea of great but there you have it, we were looking for a camping Store to replace one of the wheel levelers, Mark had forgotten to pick one up several nights ago and now we couldn’t level the camper if needed so we were headed to Nice Caravans some 12kms away from where we were, cruising along the coast road we found the turnoff we needed and headed out. No problems finding the place we got a few supplies for the van and retraced our steps. That was when the trouble really began, being stubborn we refused to use the Autostrade and wanted to cruise the coast road however we found ourselves on the wrong side of the road we needed and could not for the ... read more

Before heading off for the day we went back up to the village for some photos and a visit to the market day there, if the night was good the daytime was even better, let the photos speak for themselves but my recommendation is if you are anywhere near this area make it a MUST DO as it is a great place to visit. Heading off for the hills the drive through the gorge was spectacular and the views of the river below were fantastic, again this is a must do when in the region. We came across a group of old vintage cars doing the run who had stopped off at the hotel part way through and were having a merry old time, the oldest car there was 1912 not bad for an oldie. Driving ... read more

The destination for today are the Gorges Du Verdon a spectacular gorge and mountain area well know and reputed to be worth the drive. Trundling along typical narrow country lanes we came to the area and first found the lake and saw this little village nestled on the cliffs above and more spectacularly the church jammed up into the cleft of the cliff, you gotta wonder why, taking the usual pics we decided to head for the gorges and camp up in the hills for the night, good plan until around 20km on Mark decided to look at the fuel gauge and bugger it was very low, too low in fact and it was back down the hills to find some fuel, by the time this was all done it was getting late so we decided ... read more

Rising early it was off to Avignon to visit the Pont Du Saint Benezet and the Popes Palace and I did not even know the popes had a residence in Avignon back in 1200 but there you have it, they did and ran the Roman Catholic Church from there for around 200 years. It was a stunning place to visit and the centre of Avignon is a walled city to protect it from the Rhône River when it floods, which if you look at history is quite often. The bridge, or what remains of the bridge is very cool and again dates back to the 12th century and if the legend is correct is was a bloke called Benezet, a poor farmer from the hills that thought god had spoken to him and told him to ... read more

Well its time to leave one on my favourite spots so far but before we go we have some shopping to do, Pam’s iPhone has developed a problem, its not going and that is a bugger. The only answer was to find the SFR shop in Millau, SFR is the French Vodafone and being French they wont call it Vodafone like everyone else in Europe. Anyway into the shop and finding a guy who almost speaks English we make him understand that the damn thing is not going, ahhhh its tough sometimes but he finally worked out that we had been sold a dud, when we purchased the new sim way back in Paris we were told that we had 20 days unlimited data use, and in the French way that was bulls….t it turns out ... read more

Bright and early today and off to the view the viaduct, the main reason for coming to this little town, well the National Geographic programme we watched some time ago did not do this massive structure any justice at all. The viaduct is simply stunning and rises from the Tarn river below to soar more then 300 meters high, way taller than the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building and our own Sky Tower. Pam took some great shots of the Viaduct from so many vantage points that I lost count and then promptly told me that we had to come back at night for some night shots. Ok, so we then headed off to find the stone houses along the Tarn River that Pam had seen, The Gorges Du Tarn seemed like a good starting point ... read more

Very quiet day today, Pam worked Bree and I went and did the grocery shopping, I did the laundry and made a clothesline as this useless campground only had a washing machine and no drier. Spot check: Campground called Camping de deux rivieres is a nice camp site right alongside the river but poor services, rated at 6. Tomorrow investigating places to photograph the viaduct and take a trip over it.... read more

Waking rather shattered after a night disturbed by rowdy French people in the car park outside our camper we headed off to Millau some 350km away. Despite being a little noisy the free camp spot was just great and any other night would be perfect, highly recommended as a camp stop for free. Considering we were going by the back roads as usual the Tomtom told us it was 5 hours we decided to make haste. The first stop for the day was a little river village called Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans where some guys were fishing (without luck it should be added) amongst a stunning walled village rising 50m up above the river bank, the required pics were taken and we proceeded to make further haste south and west. The next stop was to service the camper as ... read more

Taking our leave from our dear friends, Christian and Christine, we decided to do a circuit of the lake and head to photograph the old Chateau on the eastern side of the lake before heading south again, the chateau was closed but still an imposing sight from the lane below. After fueling up it was off into the hills winding steeply up the Col de Plaimpalais we lunched in the alps and what a stunning drive through the mountains it was, steep hills and switchback turns it would be great in a fast car on a closed road. Slowly leaving the main mountains we wound slowly down through a town called Chambrey and onwards to our stop for the night. We free camped again in a little village called Beauvoir-en-Royans set high up on the cliffs ... read more
