Deciding we had seen enough canals and churches it was off to the Northern Lakes district to visits the lakes and mountains of northern Italy. Leaving around 2pm as Pam had work to do we used the Autostrade again for a while to cover some miles, leaving the strada part way along at Ala we stooged across the top of the lake winding to a town called Riva Del Garde, it was manic. There was some push bike competition in town and being Saturday afternoon there were bikes for Africa. It was really mental and finding a free place to park for the night was not going to happen. Deciding on a camp ground we found a seemingly lovely spot called camping Bella Vista, not as the name suggests to be sure. It was to be ... read more

Returning to Venice it was time to work out the canal and local water ferry service to try and get to the Islands of Murano and Burano not far away but forever when trying to work out the ferry service, there are about 10 different lines going to 10 different places and which one to catch was starting be a worry. Firstly it was trip up the grand canal to see all the palaces lining both banks, this was an education watching all the gondolas, ferries, freight boats and water taxis working the canals at the same time, it was a bit like a dance really. Arriving back at St Marks Square ferry terminal we caught the next boat out to Murano and after a 40 minute trip we arrived on the little island. Know mainly ... read more

Pam has been looking forward to visiting Venice for the whole trip and now the time is here, the ferry was right on time and we left at 10am arriving in Venice at 10.20. Embarking the ferry we were confronted with a choice, left or right, perusing the map I decided that the right was the way to go, wrong it was left, but I must say it was an easy mistake to make, not a good start to one of the hardest cities to navigate around in the world. There are no cars, buses. Trains in Venice, it is by walking, water taxi or the water buses, which are slow but get you there. We used the old fashioned method of walking and once we had the map figured we were off, getting lost in ... read more

Before heading off to Venice I wanted to visit the Ferrari museum so after a couple of wrong turns we found it, with easy parking by the front gate and alongside the inevitable Ferrari shops. After a stroll through the shops seeing the outrageous prices it was off to the museum for a look see. This is a great place to visit if you are a car or F1 buff but if you are not then don’t bother, I loved it, they had actual F1 race cars on show from around 2001 onwards, only the championship winners unfortunately, cant have non winners on show can we. There are samples of engines dating back to 1985 and the turbo day’s right through to the 2010 v10. Also on display were numbers of older and very rare road ... read more

An early start today as we had some ground to cover and I wanted to stop off and see Imola race track today and Pam had promised Gerry that we would call into Forli’ on the way. Before that though it was off to another country, the 5th smallest in the world and the 2nd smallest in Europe, that is San Marino. Total population 27,000, I still don’t know how or why San Marino is separate from Italy but there you have it. San Marino is s small country located on the top of yet another hill with a large castle fortification, the day was very cloudy and the best way to get to the town is via the cable car. The best thing about San Marino it is tax free therefore a great place to ... read more

As we had been free camping for a few days we needed to get to a camp ground for clothes washing and to empty the camper and re-stock with water and food. We had little planned so we hit the Autostrade to make up some more time. We had been playing a game in the van to see who could guess the cost of the toll on the stretch of Autostrade we used, it is so inconsistent that sometimes you could do 100km and it cost 2.40E and then you could do 50km and it might cost 11.00E bloody impossible to figure, but that is the Italian way. Not much to report today as we arrived at the camp ground early to do the chores. After that it was a walk along the beach, the daily ... read more

Leaving our little spot we headed off to find Scanno, only to stop in another little village around 5kms away to get some local produce and goodies (vittles was running a little low due to Easter and Italy being closed) they had the best little tomatoes you have ever had and the whole shop was 20E for two large bags of tucker. We found this area to be very camper friendly with heaps of camper parking and another sosta at N41° 45.237 and E13° 59.311, full camper service at a small cost for water, around 3 euro, nice spot by the lake and quiet as well. Heading off further up into the mountains we found the greatest little spot in all of Italy along the pass road from Barrea to Scanno, the drive and scenery is ... read more

Rising bright and early we walked off to catch the bus for our excursion up Mount Vesuvius some 500m from our campsite, the trip we had chosen was a 3 hour journey taking us right to the top of the only active volcano in Europe and one of the most dangerous in the world. First stage was a rattley old bus to the entrance to the National Park and then with the usual Italian mucking around and being issued more tickets only to hand them to the guy standing to the guy who issued them in the first place (they seem to have this proclivity with tickets for everything). Finally settling in to the new flash 4 wheel drive bus it was off up to the summit, we thought. The trip was around 15 mins up ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi April 22nd 2011

Another glorious day on the Med and we headed off to Sorrento on the train planning on a short visit then down to Amalfi and then back. Arriving in Sorrento Pam suggested we hop a boat out to the Isle of Capri, the playground of the rich and famous in the know. Sterling idea and we brought return tickets at a cost of 70e, sitting in the café with my morning espresso thinking about the boat trip and we decided to exchange the return tickets for tickets from Capri to Amalfi, great idea, only problem was the trip from to Capri to Amalfi was not till 4.30 and was around an hour and we had to then get a bus from Capri to Sorrento and then train back to Pompeii, not knowing when the bus left ... read more

The day dawned bright clear and hot as the Med often is and we headed off late to the ruins of Pompeii, they are huge and seem to stretch for miles. It is interesting to note that these ruins surpass the Roman Forum in Rome in terms of condition, whereas The Roman Forum were really ruins much of Pompeii is intact and you can almost feel the old Roman town bustling with life. There is a large Greek influence in the south and it comes to the for when viewing these ruins, this is a must do when in Italy. We spent nearly 4 hours roaming around until we found the 13 bodies that were excavated in 1960, plaster casts were made and the bodies lay now where they died in 79AD. The other interesting fact ... read more
