7:00am we wake up for a typical Turkish breakfast. Lots of eggs, cold meats and cheeses, as well as salad and toast with chocolate spread. At half past 8 our tour bus picks us up for a trip to the Topkapi Palace. Sultans lived and governed here from the 1400s until the mid 1800s, it covers over 70,000 square meters, and is divided into 3 sections. All of them are stunning, and the innermost part holds some impressive relics. The bow and sword of Muhammad, as well as bits of his teeth and board are here, and an 86 carat diamond are amongst them. Lunch is next, and we have a bit of an issue. Marks' false teeth broke, and he has to head to a hospital to have them fixed, but Zac and I continue ... read more

After another 11 hour fight, we reach Istanbul, and we find it is somewhat milder, a fresh 12 degrees at 6.30am. Our Neon Tours shuttle takes us to the Centrum Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Istanbul in the old quarter, our home for the next couple of days. Our Hotel is located in a really cool area full of tiny narrow cobbled streets and full of restaurants and little shops, also very close to many of the highlights of Istanbul. There are mosques everywhere, almost every block has a mosque on it and the merging of Eastern and western cultures is everywhere. Our first experience of the “call to prayer’ was surreal and haunting with the call going out over the whole city but from the different mosques with different songs, very strange. To ... read more

Many problems with photos today. It was so hot and humid Pam's camera kept fogging up and Hong Kong was covered in misty fog/smog. Day two arrived and today we have a half-day tour of the area booked covering some of Kowloon and onto HK Island. Our first destination was the fishing village of Aberdeen. An odd name for a district in an Asian city, but Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997, when it was given back to China. Aberdeen is the home of the Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant, and is also one of the wealthiest parts of Hong Kong, there are individual houses here, everywhere else is apartments. We go for a ride on a traditional fishing boat called a Sampan, which means "three pieces of wood" in Cantonese. The skipper is at ... read more

Fancy that no dramas leaving good ole NZ this time, for those first time readers last time we left for an overseas trip we got hauled out from boarding because they found something suspicious in our luggage, a printer, however I digress. Arriving in Hong king airport in fog, it was hard to see many details of the landscape apart from mountains. Breezing through customs, like no check of our baggage at all we couldn’t find our transfer people and I didn’t have the contact details in my hand luggage it was packed away, so I am stressed to the max after a long flight and no sleep, we finally figured out we were in the wrong entry area, for those of you who don’t know HK airport is really really huge, like bigger than a ... read more

Considering we fly out at 9.30 and have to be at the airport at 6.30 we decided to have a quiet day and do a little last minute shopping so it back on a public bus and headed off to Buena Park Mall. It looked great as we passed it the day before but when we got there it was virtually empty, very few shoppers and half of the shops were empty, the recession I guess. We stooged around for a while and then decided this was no good and went back to Anaheim. We then grabbed a cab to the nearest Westfield Mall some 10 minuets and 18.00 dollars away to finish the day. The cabbie we got promised to return and pick us up at 4.00 after telling him how important it was that ... read more

Today it was off for our trip to Hollywood so it was onto the public bus again heading to downtown LA, after a 1.5 hour trip we arrived and started looking for a way out to Hollywood. We started for the subway but on the way found a hop on off bus and jumped on that. We got to Hollywood around 11.00 to be met with the crazy Hollywood locals, guys dressed as Superman, Jack Sparrow and even Darth Vader all looking for money for photos. Mooching around Hollywood Boulevard and the historic Chinese and Kodak theaters was like being the movies. Deciding to jump back on to the bus we headed off towards Beverly Hills along the Sunset strip we finally got to Rodeo Drive and the “posh” part of town, to me it just ... read more

The day has dawned for Bree as we set off at 9.00 for Disneyland, just across the street, the crowds even at that time are huge but organised. Entering the park was like entering another world, to coin a cliché and deciding what to do was quite a challenge. During the day the crowds got even larger if that was possible and as we had to leave at 4.00 we had to rush somewhat. With the rides done we left the park to return to the hotel to shower and change for the evenings festivities, a trip to Medieval Times, a show and meal spectacular located at Buena Park some 10 minutes from our Hotel. The dinner and show were spectacular and comprised of a Medieval show with horses and knights and mock battles and a ... read more

Arriving back at Long Beach around 7.00am we debarked at 10.00 and returned to the states via the gang plank and customs. Finding the luggage was a breeze but getting the shuttle was a little different. As we were going to Anaheim which is about an hours drive from Long Beach the drivers were not too keen and seemed to want the close trips to the airport etc. Finally securing a ride we arrived at the hotel outside Disneyland around 1pm. The Carousel Inn is a small motel type place, clean comfortable with great staff and above all quite cheap for Disneyland. With only a part day left we decided to visit Disneytown, a free entry shopping area adjacent to Disneyland itself. Worth visiting but only for shopping which is sooooo expensive... read more

The final day at sea as tomorrow we arrive back at Long Beach so we sat by the pool and drank cocktails. I want to take the time now to put in a plug for Carnival Splendor the boat we were on. The meals are just fantastic and run 24 hours a day, you can get anything from Pizza and Burgers right up to 4 star dining. The staff likewise is just great and nothing was to much trouble, right from our room steward, Sang, to the matre d' of the restaurant. Check out the animals made out of folded towels that were left in our room every night, Sang made them and we got to the stage where we looked forward to getting back to the cabin after the evenings fun just to see what ... read more
