Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 11th 2011

My day started quite slowly. In the last few weeks, I have done quite a lot of coming and going on the trains that I am appreciating being in just one place for a few days. As I was having breakfast, I was thinking that I am probably not eating enough of certain things like vegetables. It is virtually impossible to eat completely healthy on a trip like this. What I have been eating is this. Nutella … I didn’t realize that this was so popular in Europe. It is everywhere and absolutely divine on a croissant!! I actually saw a cookbook dedicated to the chocolate hazelnut wonder. Proscuttio … you would think that this stuff was being discontinued and that I was on my last chance to eat it. Espresso … I will have to ... read more

There is no wondering whether you have arrived at the right place when arriving in Venice. As the train makes its entrance into the Santa Lucia train station, you see water around you but it is nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary. Then you step out of the train station and then all doubts that you may not have made it to Venice are erased! Right in front of you is the Grand Canal. There are vaporetto stops. There are tourists. There are souvenir stands. There are gondolas. Now all I needed to do was to get to my hotel. I knew that it was just past the Ponte de Guglie which is a short walk from the train station. Apart from that I had to play it by ear. I had my hotel reservation ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona May 9th 2011

And the title of this blog says it all … well that and the number of tick marks that were made on my Verona Card. You'll see the photo. Ironically I actually got a relatively late start to the day. Like I mentioned yesterday, there are a number of attractions that are closed on Monday so I had to do a bit of strategic planning! So I set off and landed in Piazza Erbe where I had been the day prior. This time around, there were a number of vendors setting up their wares. It was mostly souvenirs but there were also food stalls. I poked around in that for a bit and then headed to the nearby Torre Dei Lamberti. It is a large watchtower that was built between the 12th and 15th century. Because ... read more

I have managed to land in just the cutest of towns ... hence the title of this blog! As with anything with me though, getting here was not just a straight line. There has to be story or two just on how I got here. I am one bumbling episode after the next. First, I was locked into the hotel. My Hotel Milano is a small hotel so there is only reception services until 20:30 and the owner comes in probably to prep for breakfast which starts at around 8 am. Because of that I had actually settled my bill last night (and had mentioned that I would be leaving quite early). When I came into Milan, she had shown me how to use the fob to get into the building after hours. She never bothered ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Como May 7th 2011

Contrary to my usual ramblings, this is actually going to be just a short post. I took the day to visit Como which many of you know because George Clooney has a home here in a little town on Lake Como. It is about an hour's train ride from Milan and apart from the Duomo there is nothing particular to visit (or at least anything that I was interested in visiting). There is some incredible shopping to be had though. My day was really spent walking around the small streets of the town. I had thought of taking the boat trip out to some of the other towns that lie on the shores of Lake Como (like Bellagio) but this would have involved a two-hour boat ride just going (there is a speed boat but even ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan May 6th 2011

Today as it turns out would be a greatly interesting day in Milan. I was looking forward to coming here but there is also a part of me that added Milan just as a stopover between Torino and Venice. I sort of needed a halfway point. There were a few things that I wanted to see but nothing that I had been greatly looking forward to unlike some of the other places that I have as part of this itinerary. Well Milano has surprised me! It was just a fascinating day … well for me anyways. My day started with a quick “colazione” or breakfast (see learning new words every day …) and a lovely chat with the owner of the hotel. She is the one who greeted me so warmly yesterday. The hotel has only ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan May 5th 2011

Today was the day that I was saying hello to Milano. The train ride was uneventful really. The hotel I am staying at (My Hotel Milano) is a little bit more in the suburbs but easily accessible by subway. The only reason that I had problems finding it was that I thought it was at number 46 but it was actually number 14. Ooops …don’t know where 46 came from! Probably the hotel in Turin had that numbered address. Who knows … at this point I am amazed that I wake up and that I actually know in which city I am. Still don’t know what day of the week it is though without looking it up! It had to be the loveliest welcome I have ever had in a hotel room. When I introduced myself, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Turin May 4th 2011

A second wind ... that's what going to bed at 9:30 pm and waking up at around 8 am will do for you ... it will give you a second wind. With only two days in Turin, I needed it so that I would be able to at least get a taste of what the city had to offer. My visit would start at nearby Piazza Statuto to see the Al Traforo del Cenisio-Frejus. It is a beautiful fountain of which I know nothing about (except that it is pretty). I just came upon it by playing around with the map that I downloaded on my iPhone (which are so ridiculously useful by the way!!) but there are no descriptions. That would take me down Via Carmine and my first church for the day (there would ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Turin May 3rd 2011

I woke up this morning and I think that the hectic-ness of the last couple of weeks had finally caught up to me. I was definitely travel weary. Even after a hearty breakfast, I was still a little sluggish. I figured that I would head out and just see how it would go. In the end, I did get quite a few things done but it was a slow start. I had no sense of direction and my legs felt like lead. I knew that I was going to have a few of those days so in Turin it was. It did not take away at all from enjoying what I did manage to squeeze though. The first stop was another thing that I been looking forward to and that was the Museo Nazionale de Cinema. ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice May 1st 2011

Today was one of those days that you wish would never end. Idyllic I think is the perfect word for it. I have been doing a lot of coming and going in the last few days. Actually in the first two weeks of this trip I have made 8 train trips. So I decided to just relax in Nice and enjoy all that it has to offer. Today would also be my last day in France so I just wanted to soak it in a little and reflect on the trip so far. My day would start with a short walk to the beautiful Russian church that is just stone's throw from my hotel. The church is just incredibly beautiful and intricate. Unfortunately I was not able to enter because the church service was actually taking ... read more
