Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Grasse April 30th 2011

Grasse is about an hour away by train from Nice. The climate in that area is conducive to the cultivation of flowers so over the last 100 plus years, a number of perfume houses have set up shop in Grasse. Similarly to Monaco, my little iPhone map (although very helpful) didn't really show that going from the train station to the first place I wanted to visit would require climbing something akin to Mount Everest. It only shows up as a small red dotted line called the "Traverse du Train". How lovely ... I thought that I would just be enjoying a lovely little stroll to my favorite perfume house. Instead I blew out my left lung. C'est la vie ... The perfume house that I was very much looking forward to visiting is the Parfum ... read more

Europe » Monaco » Monte Carlo April 29th 2011

Today I would be making my way a short way out of Nice to Monaco. This is definitely something that I had been looking forward to. In part because my dad was there a few years back and I was looking forward to seeing some of the things that he had seen himself. As I made my way out the train station (which is out of this world by the way!!), I think that I caught Grand Prix fever! There were already setting up bleachers and stands for the race that is only set for the end of May. I would later learn that it actually takes 2 months to actually prepare for this event that welcoes 22,000 spectators (more than the actual population of this small principality). I had a small map from my guidebook ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice April 28th 2011

Today was the day that I would be leaving Marseille and making my way to Nice. The TGV takes you straight to the centre of town and would be a stone's throw from my hotel (Hotel Riviera). The reason that I picked this hotel was because of how close it was but also because they also give you a packed lunch every day (on top of a buffet breakfast!). I have always had visions of Nice as being sun-kissed. I came in to a Nice on a day that was unfortunately grey and a little chilly. Thankfully it was not raining. There is definitely a luxury factor that exists here especially in comparison to Marseille. Marseile (or at least what I was able to see) is a little bit more salt of the earth. Nice is ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Arles April 27th 2011

Today would also take me out of Marseille to the nearby town of Arles. I do have to say that train travel in France is so easy, convenient and efficient. All of the trains I have taken have left exactly on time, are clean and the automated machines for the purchase/retrieval of tickets are so easy to use. The security at the train station is also quite present with both police and military presence in the stations. I have also felt very safe the whole time that I have been here. Not once so far have I felt like I was not. The French have been lovely, warm and quite welcoming. The fact that I speak French does help and my Canadian accent definitely piques their interest. Vous avez un accent charmant Mademoiselle … you never ... read more

Today I spent the day in Aix-en-Provence. This is actually one of the places that I was most looking forward to visit. The reason being that when I was 13 I had a pen pal called Florence and she was from Aix. I don’t know if back at that age, I ever had the notion that I would one day make it to Aix-en-Provence. Aix is relatively close to Marseille needing only a 45 minute train ride to get there (and of course much faster if you hop on the TGV … but there’s a budget … so no TGV’s for these little jaunts!). The small Aix-en-Provence train station is located very close to the old part of Aix and the most interesting part of this town, by far. My visit would start at the Cours ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Avignon April 25th 2011

Today would not be spent in Marseille but rather the small neighbouring town of Avignon. I booked my train tickets last night and made sure to arrive at the Avignon Centre station. The other is on the TGV and comes in a little out of the centre of town (although much faster it is also much more expensive). On the TER (Train Express Regional) it takes about an hour and a half. Not too bad. I had been looking forward t o having some time to read on this trip (the Kobo is loaded up with tons of books) so I delved right into The Da Vinci Code. I have read it a number of times but under the circumstances of where I find myself, I was in the mood to read it again. While waiting ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Marseille April 24th 2011

My morning started with a cup of espresso. My room is equipped with a Nespresso machine and it is loveliness in a small cup. I stepped out on the balcony and sipped my coffee while listening and watching Marseille wake up. I do think that many Marseillais had a late night last night. I was thinking about how loud and chaotic the Vieux Port was at night. It took watching the morning news to see that there was a huge soccer win for the Marseille team (against Montpellier) and those were the sounds of some very happy and rowdy soccer fans!! So no gunshots … just fireworks … phew! I do have to say that I am just enjoying being in France and being surrounded by anything and everything that is French. It took me over ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Marseille April 23rd 2011

This morning I made my way out of Lyon and arrived in Marseille. I will be spending the next five days here. This is not only to allow me to visit the actual city of Marseille but I do plan on visiting some of the neighbouring towns as well. The weather in leaving Lyon was grey and slightly windy and it was not any better as I arrived in Marseille. It was quite chilly and the rain was coming down. No worries … it was bound to happen at one point in this trip. The saving grace was that my hotel the Newhotel Vieux Port is directly across from the Vieux-Port metro station and just a few steps from the actual Vieux Port. My room looks out on this neighbouring church and if you step out ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon April 22nd 2011

I only have two days in Lyon so today I had to make sure to fit in what I really wanted to see. In the end, two days was perfect. I didn't feel rushed and I truly got to do what I wanted to do. I'm also starting to get into the "routine" of travelling. There is something very different about living out of a suitcase. In reading a few Buddhist things, there is always a recurring theme with respect to not having attachment to material things. Although I do believe that to be true, I do have to say that it is much more evident to me now. I literally am carting my life around in a small suitcase and I probably couldn't be happier!! I am only focusing on seeing pretty things, taking photos ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon April 21st 2011

The day started with an early morning wake up call so that I would be able to catch the train to Lyon. I am not the most coordinated of people so when I arrived in Paris I was a sight to be seen trying to fit myself through the turnstiles at the metro station with a backpack and carry-on suitcase. Really ... I confess ... the handle of my suitcase got caught up in the turnstile. I would still be there if someone hadn't come through to help me. So the big stress of the whole event of me transferring from Paris to Lyon was how I was going to manage to get myself through the turnstiles again. But all was good ... I hatched a plan first before actually throwing myself through those contraptions that ... read more
