Je m’balladais sur l’avenue Le Coeur ouvert a l’inconnu J’avais envie de dire bonjour a n’importe qui … And this is where the similarities between me and Joe Dassin ended … This is essentially a song about a night-one stand he had with a girl he met on the Champs-Elysees. Not exactly what I was going for here on my last day in Paris! But it is where my day began … Oh Champs-Elysees Au soleil, Sous la pluis A midi ou a minuit Il y a tout ce que vous voulez au Champs-Elysees!! I took the subway to the George V metro station which allowed me to stroll up the Champs-Elysees towards the Arc de Triomphe. This avenue is a major artery in Paris and it is lined with shops that I sadly cannot afford ... read more

The day started with a short ride to what I would say was the most ornate of subway stations I had ever seen, that is, the Louvre-Rivoli station. They have made it look like you are actually walking down the hall of a museum! This of course takes you to the Rue de Rivoli along which the Musee du Louvre runs. I made my way down the side of the building in order to enter the inner courtyard. At this time of day, the only people milling about were Army security personnel toting their riffles (gotta keep that Mona Lisa safe!). The building itself is absolutely stunning. I then passed another archway to catch my first glimpse of that famous glass pyramid. First, I do have to admit that it is smaller than I had imagined ... read more

It is probably completely psychosomatic but the third day of travel is always when I wake up feeling worn down and this time was no exception. I was definitely feeling the effects of climbing over 1,000 stairs and all of that walking on wobbly cobblestone streets … sore ankles and shin splints are very much a reality. But I was not going to be slowed down by a few aches and pains … I only have a few days here so I need to make the most of it. I don’t care if it kills me … Paris is waiting!! I set out on foot this time around as most of the things that I wanted to see today were only minutes away from the hotel. I was amused while on my way to the first ... read more

After a breakfast of coffee, baguette, croissant and a pain au chocolat, I headed to the metro station en route to the area of Montmartre, where I would spend most of the day. In order to avoid the throngs of tourists and locals that inevitably gather there, I first started with Sacre-Coeur. This huge basilica, whose construction was completed in 1914, sits atop a hill (known as La Butte de Montmartre) and can be seen from many a vantage point throughout Paris. On my arrival, it was actually the very first thing I saw as I rode the train into the city. The basilica itself is white in colour, said to be due to the calcite that the stone produces when it is exposed to rain water which in essence bleaches the stone to this pale ... read more

Enjoy every minute of it … it is a dream come true after all. The parting words from my mother as my parents dropped me off at the train station to catch my bus to the Dorval airport. Yes that dream … or that promise rather. Pass the Chartered Accountants exam, go to Paris. Easy as that! Well I have owed myself that promise since November 28, 1997 when at three pm that afternoon, an automated voice at the end of the telephone said “Congratulations you have been successful at the 1997 Uniform Final Exam”. She also said “please press 1 if you would like to hear the message again” to which I proceeded to press 1 about 10 times in a row just to make sure that she had indeed said “successful”. Four consecutive summers ... read more

I have made it back safe and sound. A little worse for wear but had a good 12-hour sleep (except for a little fur ball incident at 3 am ... Charlotte's way of saying welcome home mommy!). With one more day at home, some good sleep and general laziness I should be fully coherent in the next couple of days. Of course, I was excited to see all of my photos ... as always some turned out, some didn't. So here are a few from Vietnam (there's less so faster to go through!) ... ... read more

I left for the HCMC airport with the same driver who had brought me into the city in the first place. As if the traffic was not enough, we encountered a couple of areas with construction. I know that I keep coming back to this traffic thing but it is truly something surreal to see. I had quite a laugh when we drove by the Botanics Garden … oh that’s where they are! Good to know for next time! I have also determined that the cause of my intestinal “malaise” might be my malaria medication. The one day that I forgot to take it, my stomach felt perfectly fine but otherwise for most of this trip I have been feeling a little dizzy, nauseous with a bit of a weak stomach. Nothing obviously that stopped me ... read more

With only about half a day, I had three things on the list of things to do before leaving HCMC. I guess that two out of three isn’t so bad! I knew I had gotten up early but didn’t realize that I was actually quite quick in getting ready so even the small restaurant fronting my hotel was not opened … oh well; I’ll grab breakfast somewhere on the street I guess. I hopped into a cab and didn’t even bother asking … I already I had my book at the ready for the taxi driver to take me to the Jade Emperor Pagoda. You would think that after almost two weeks I would be “templed out” but no, not at all. I am still awestruck at the sight of one of these amazing buildings. I ... read more
